Autumn in the Mid-Atlantic & Southern New England: NYC, NJ, & CT

After spending 5 nights in the DC area (see photos here), I took Amtrak up to NY for 6 nights, from November 1 – 7. Despite the fact it was now early November, it was very warm with highs of around 75F-80F (approx. 24F-27C) over the last several days. I’m glad I packed some shorts & t-shirts! Anyway, these photos include not just NYC, but also a day trip on Thursday, November 3rd, on Metro North to New Haven, CT, as well as most of Friday, November 4th, spent across the Hudson in Hoboken, NJ. Going back through my photos I realized I have very little from the Upper East and Upper West Sides, as well as Midtown down through Chelsea, even though I spent a fair amount of time in those areas and like them very much (though I don’t love Midtown West). Most of my photos are from the smaller-scale areas, like Brooklyn Heights, Greenwich Village & the East Village, Hoboken, and New Haven.

52. Must have famous New Haven pizza when in New Haven. I stopped by the two most popular. First up, Modern Apizza for lunch. I order their famous white clam pizza. I thought the pizza was delicious, though in any future visits I’d likely stick with my preferred toppings of simply pepperoni and/or sausage. But I’m glad I tried the clam.

87. Light is fading fast, so time to catch a Metro North train back to Manhattan. I will say I was a little disappointed with the quality of the ride on Metro North. I thought it was bumpy. Not sure if it was the train or the tracks (with perhaps lots of junctions?) or both. Meanwhile my ride on NJ Transit from Penn Station to Newark was extremely smooth. It felt like we were gliding along the rails, as it should feel, as opposed to my experience on Metro North which certainly didn’t feel like a nice smooth glide (it was clanky & somewhat jerky-feeling).

Always a little sad to leave New York, but I had a great time exploring not just the city, but also venturing beyond to both Hoboken and New Haven. Hope you enjoyed these scenes from along the way!

Great tour! Same goes for your D.C. thread - very enjoyable to see the mix of neighborhoods and architectural highlights, along with some of the fine food and coffee shops

Gorgeous time of the year for these places and what amazing urban spaces these be.

Very nice, some of the photos have great effects. Bricks, mortar, & trees, maybe every city just needs to be like this.

Looks great! Love the Yale and Columbia pics, and the restaurant commentary.

Excellent showcases of these mid Atlantic cities

You should send the pics to Chris Arnade as a counterpoint to his tours

Great pictures! You covered a lot of ground! So many neighborhoods, two Ivy League campuses, and plenty of New Haven and Hoboken pictures!

I typically stop at Modern Apizza on my way to Cape Cod. (That, or stop at Zuppardi's in West Haven.) The Italian Bomb pizza (pepperoni, sausage, bacon, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and garlic) is supposed to be their best, but I think their clams casino (clams, bacon, peppers, and onions) is even better. Their clams casino pizza is the best leftover pizza I've ever had, since the clams open up with flavor after a few hours or overnight. I recommend trying a white clam pizza as leftovers some time and letting the clams open up with flavor.

I had no idea you could find poutine in NYC. Looks like the real deal too! Funny that you have to go to a Belgian restaurant to get a dish that comes from Quebec!
