I thought it was called The Spotlite.
Info: https://www.facebook.com/spotlightloungelv It was 1601 Cahuenga on the corner of Selma. 2011 L.A. Weekly article about it closing: https://www.laweekly.com/goodbye-to-...-bar-on-earth/ A 2006 article about a person's visit there: http://www.losanjealous.com/2006/06/...the-spotlight/ This photo on Yelp shows it spelled differently: https://s3-media0.fl.yelpcdn.com/bph...d56Bg/348s.jpg This photo has it spelled both ways: https://www.laweekly.com/wp-content/..._2018854_n.jpgL.A.Weekly https://www.advocate.com/sites/defau...ght_Room_0.jpgThe Advocate On this post: Tovangar2 quotes a post that says it used to be on Vine Street. https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/sho...ostcount=10507 And a year later I quoted this post and wrote: Quote:

:previous: I see it on the left . .but it's Spotlite vs. Spotlight. Thanks for your help Martin Pal. We might have seen this cabinet card of Bellevue Terrace on NLA but there's some interesting information included with one. A. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/UwMqqU.jpg Originally found on eBay. And with the border. B. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/7ZmJ1J.jpg The seller also included this image. Note the writing at the bottom. C. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/6VnAFj.jpg Soooooo where is this writing in the B image? And then there's this. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/KJIfuz.jpg It's saying pretty much the same thing but what is this piece of paper? It doesn't look like the back of the cabinet card. So. .um. .the writing is saying the site of the Bellevue Terrace was the location of the first Normal School annnd when this information was written it was currently the site of the Jonathan Club? . .but then 6th St. is written at the bottom. :eeekk: HELP . |
:previous:
Don't know if you can make out the scrawl, but it says "See Newmark pg. 532 & 559" referring to Harris Newmark's Sixty Years in Southern California. A bit on the Normal School, but not the Jonathan Club. The caption accompanying this photo talks about renaming Pearl St. and Bellevue Terrace to Figueroa and Sixth. I think these houses are beside the ones in your photo.(Sorry, no pics. I'm writing this on a phone.) |

Police break up an attempted march on City Hall by the unemployed, Jan. 1930.....the demonstration was inspired by the International Communist Party, hence the papers dubbed the protest "Red Riots". Three police officers were injured and eight communists were arrested in riots at Los Angeles, Calif., January 20th, when officers thwarted attempts to hold a "hunger march" on the City Hall. This picture shows a cop getting a little rough treatment by the crowd and a motorcycle officer hurrying to his aid." |
Mystery house-garden from 1914
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out where these 1914 movie scenes were filmed. The location appears to be a large house with a garden featuring urns (a particularly large urn, almost human-sized, can be seen in photo 1 at the far left). This house has a room that overlooks the garden and stairs that descend to it (second picture below). https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/4601/2tCt5K.jpg Source: (Free Public Domain Media) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFlolhsxMnI&t=1102s https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/6114/L3Kw5C.jpg Source: (Free Public Domain Media) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFlolhsxMnI&t=1102s Any ideas? I've been looking at pix of houses that were around then but haven't come across anything definitive. Thank you! |

A little searching finds a few interesting things. This link, HERE, has some info about this company: Oz Film Company: Founded in 1914, this company, also known as The Oz Film Manufacturing Company, produced silent films based off L. Frank Baum's books, most notably the Oz series. Every single one of them bombed commercially. The movies they made had various colors and custom themes playing over it, like silent films traditionally do. In 1915, this company would be absorbed into Metro Pictures (now Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). Only four of their films are known to survive: The Patchwork Girl of Oz, His Majesty the Scarecrow of Oz, The Magic Cloak of Oz and The Last Egyptian, the last of which is only partially found. The Wikipedia page, HERE, has further information, including: The studio was located on Santa Monica Boulevard between Gower Street and Lodi Street. The facility would later be used by Famous Players-Lasky (now called Paramount Pictures) and National Film Corporation of America. It was considered state-of-the-art at the time. It was used almost exclusively for interior shots. Exterior shots were done outdoors rather than simulated in the studio. In some scenes, it is evident that some 'interior' scenes were also filmed outdoors. In the "Decline" section it's noted: The studio was rented out to others, and was eventually demolished. In the "Stock Company" section there's a discrepancy. It says, J. Farrell MacDonald directed all of the film productions and acted in some of them. L. Frank Baum wrote all the scripts, however, in the youtube link to the film in question this one has the credit: Written and Directed by L. Frank Baum. At this link, HERE, some Moving Picture World advertisements, show the address of The Oz Film Manufacturing Company written as: Studio and Laboratories, Santa Monica Blvd., Gower to Lodi Sts., Los Angeles, Cal. Also, welcome to NLA, Ossrae. |

Here's a mystery location currently on eBay. Seller's description:..."Amateur 35mm Slide Photo- Los Angeles Parade- Cowboy - Horse - 1965" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/5uh53s.jpg eBay. At first I thought it said Furs by Mannix. Anyone heard of Furs by Mannis? (it sounds vaguely familiar) . |
.
I know that we (noirishers) have seen the little train that used to haul tourist around Venice Beach but I believe the following two original photographs are new to NLA. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/HEjikI.jpg A few days ago on eBay https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/QBZOuy.jpg Currently on eBay Minitaur, that's cute. . |

MYSTERY BUILDINGS
Anyone recognize these buildings? The first is of a house I am certain we've seen before on NLA, I think I even posted it...some muckety-muck built it out, I think, in Culver City. Just can't remember the m-m's name or the context. The huge white Colonial building--seems too big to be a residence--I'm thinking may also be in Culver City. Of course I thought of the similar Ince/Selznick studios building, but it's not that.... HossC? Flying Wedge? https://i.postimg.cc/1RVv2WQ9/CChouse-isit-bmp.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Bnm5XD0Y/CChugecolonial2-bmp.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/YCCYK9W1/CChugecolonial1-bmp.jpg |
.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/i6gbBY.jpg "The Colonial style building, used as a movie set by Ince, was converted into an office building by Cecil B. DeMille during his independent years." I know. Close, but no cigar. :cowboy: |

Calif. 1916 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/G5zI3B.jpg LAPL I checked to see if the homes shown in the photo were still there. I think they're gone. (yes, I checked both sides of the street) On the north side of the street there is this cheaply built piece of shit apartment building. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/Bm1y5F.jpg Shown in 2011 It looks better by 2018. Go HERE There are homes on the south side of the street but they don't appear to be the houses shown in the 1916 photograph. Go Here Now let's travel out to Van Nuys. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...923/nXsqtx.jpg For search purposes:.. Van Nuys Pharmacy. Both snapshots were found on eBay. . |

That's Francine Dancer in front of the Spotlight Club. I worked in Hollywood in the late 90s and she was always wandering around dancing in and out of her wheelchair. Here's an episode of her public access show.
