With the Oscars tonight, numerous Academy Awards photographs are popping up on the internets :) today.

This one of Elizabeth Taylor at the 1961 Academy Awards caught my eye. (she won best actress that year for 'Butterfield 8')

I was surprised to see a prominent scar on her throat that I have never noticed before.

I thought it might be something on the negative, so I found another photograph from the same night and sure enough there it is plain as day.

Does anyone know, is this a tracheotomy scar? I just can't believe I've never noticed it before.

& good for her for not feeling the need to hide it.

Yes, the scar added to her fame... I think she had pneumonia and a tracheotomy became necessary. Apparently just before the '61 Oscars... she recovered fast. (I think some people thought she won as much for her travails over the years as her performance in Butterfield 8...)

:previous: Thanks GW. I was under the impression Ms. Taylor's major health issues happened much later in her life.

She looks so stunning (and healthy!) in the photographs that it's hard to believe she had been so terribly sick only months before.

Yesterday I happened across a group of rare negatives featuring 'Bronco Pictures'. [1910, 1911]

Below is the photographer's information that was found with the negatives.

F.M. Wallett (or is it Hallett?)
3302 Emmet Street, L.A. Cal.

"Home Evenings only; 7 to 9"

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/471Oz3.jpg

:previous: I like how he included directions to his photography studio.
(I couldn't find an Emmet Street in today's gsv. -only an Emmet 'Terrace'.

I believe a majority of his 'bronco pictures' were taken near Chutes Park south of downtown.(we've visited the area several times on NLA)

below: This is the first one I came across (they're being sold separately).

#1

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/nnJsSx.jpg
http://www.ebay.com/itm/c1911-Orig-4...3D151984094869

below: I like the little shack in the corner, inside the fence.

#4
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/HAjPTS.jpg
eBay

below: Here we see half a church.

#5
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/v3SKmk.jpg
eBay

below: Is that the 'Chute-the-Chutes' tower along the left border? (the fence appears different here than in the preceding 5 pictures)

#6
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/KENQBU.jpg
ebay

below: I believe that might be amusement park 'Swings' in the distance.

#7
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/vlEU4f.jpg
ebay

:previous: this fence matches the fence in photo #6. (I believe it's higher than the fence in photos #1 thru #5, also it's lighter in color & doesn't have the diagonal supports)
so...this might be a different venue than what appears in #1 thru 5.

*I didn't include the links with ea. photograph because some are already missing on eBay. -sorry

Elizabeth Taylor was a pack-a-day smoker – despite the fact that she was recovering from 1961 pneumonia and a tracheotomy that had seriously delayed a movie’s production and almost cost Elizabeth her life.

Her numerous medical problems were exacerbated by her constant smoking.

Years ago I had a seriously broken arm [fractured in 7 places from bike accident. I hit a steel post, flew off the bike and into a fence]. The VA doctor told me that if I smoked, the broken bone may never heal.

Her one-time husband Eddie Fisher came to my high school and sang a song at our assembly. He was not well received due to his recent divorce from Debbie Reynolds. I recall there was a lot of dark gossip about him at the school.

Here's Emmet Street on the 1910 Baist map. It can also be seen on the 1914 map, but it appears as Gleason Street, its current name, by 1921.
NB. This area is covered by two different plates of the Baist map. I've done my best to merge them.

Freeman M Hallett is listed as a photographer in the contemporary City Directories, but his home address isn't given as 3302 Emmet Street until 1912. He worked for Putnam & Valentine, a photographers who were at 208 N Spring Street.

Pencil inscription on reverse. "S. Side of Wilshire, E of Loomis Sept. 18, 1926"

Epstein Bros. Tailor Shop on the left. (mystery sign on the roof next door, far left)

First-- Is it just my computer, or are many more pictures missing from the thread? I noticed that many of HossC's images are not visible, though they seem to come and go. The missing ones appear to be those posted through Imageshack. Missing images are common in long-ago posts, but disappearances seem to be occurring in much more recent ones. Another Imageshack item is the recent one of ER's seen above-- I came across the image below, which reminded me of the Epstein tailor shop, but couldn't compare due to ER's missing picture.

The photo below came from LA City History and has these notations: dated 9-17-32... while the site says this is a shot on Park View Street, I noticed the sliver of building in the background, which made me wonder if this is actually Wilshire... is the apt building the Wellington, as discussed in conjunction with Epstein's tailor shop? (See post 33576)

Can you resuscitate your Epstein picture, ER?

I noticed strange behavior with some of my images over the weekend, but didn't get a chance to see if it happened on another computer until today. My images are on Photobucket, and the site hasn't been right since before Christmas. I have tried deleting and replacing the affected images, but it didn't make any difference. Sometimes, refreshing the page a couple of times seems to work, but not always. All the photos are still safely in my albums, there just appears to be something stopping them from displaying correctly.

I'll email their tech support again, but I don't know if it will help. Are any other Photobucket users noticing problems?

In the 1910 census Freeman Milo Hallett appears at 1636 1/2 Maple Avenue with his mother Emma. This was a rented house. He was born in Massachusetts in 1883. He married prior to 1914. He is seen in the 1930 Census in Monterey Park with his wife and then appears in San Gabriel in the 1940 Census with his wife Ruby, son Richard and also his mother. Mr Hallett died in Monterey Park, Los Angeles County in 1976.

HossC-- I realize now that you use Photobucket and that ER uses Imageshack (which you can see when you right-click images, or even the small icon in place of a missing image) and click "open image in new tab"... so it's not just Photobucket, it seems.

Yes!

There seems to be no consistent pattern to the problems. Sometimes images will display in Google Chrome but not Firefox.
Sometimes it's the other way around, and sometimes images won't display with either browser. Then again, sometimes an
image that has "disappeared" will reappear. Sometimes there's a little image icon in place of the image, and sometimes
there isn't.

My first thought was that the problem lies with Photobucket, but perhaps it's really with Skyscraper Forum?

When the studios withdrew their financial support, the Oscars had to downsize to the
985-seat theater in its Melrose Avenue headquarters for one year, 1949.

_____

The print on this postcard reads "Academy Award Theater, Hollywood, California," but technically it should read West Hollywood.

I'd never really known the exact whereabouts of this place until Sopas did a great post with a lot of photos from the 1949 Oscars showing the exterior of this place.

:previous: Yes, I wanted to see that post (I mentioned above) again, Post #6301, and sadly discovered that
all fifteen of the images he had posted (through Imageshack) are now missing. :(

Can you guess which recently discussed Wurdeman & Becket building is under construction in these 1947 Julius Shulman images?

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

There's a bigger clue in this shot.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original

Did you guess? This is "Job 141: Wurdeman & Becket, General Petroleum Building, Construction (Los Angeles, Calif.),1947".

Both from Getty Research Institute

There's a key difference between the missing images from that post and the ones that are missing from mine. If I try to access any of sopas ej's Imageshack images from that post, I get a "404 Not Found" error message, indicating that the image is no longer available. With my images, they are still in my album, and can be accessed directly, but just don't always show in the forum.

I've just checked another fairly recent post of mine, and only one of four images showed. I tried opening the post in a new tab so that no other images were being downloaded, but still only one image showed. The message "Transferring data from i809.photobucket.com..." made it look like forum was trying to show the others, but not succeeding. When I accessed the second image on its own, it showed straight away, so I refreshed the whole post, and all four images appeared.

I think this is a Photobucket issue. Last month their whole site was down for maintenance for a day or so. That was after giving me excuses, and saying my issues were restricted to a small number of users. I've still been having occasional problems since then, but much less frequently than over Christmas. My earlier email to Photobucket's tech support got an automated response telling me to check things which I've already checked, and which are not related to the problems I'm having. I'll reply to that and see if I get anywhere.

Some are worse than others. BifRayRock's pics are notorious for displaying incorrectly or not at all, and even when they have just been posted, sopas_ej's images almost never show up when I view his entries. To see his pics, I have to click on 'Quote', then find the image links, and copy/paste the URLs one-by-one into my browser. But, like you say, now even that doesn't work, and I only get the 404 error.

Pueblo Oratorio

I wasn't aware the Chapman Hotel & Bungalows had a private chapel somewhere on it's grounds.

Does anyone know where the chapel was located on the hotel grounds?

As I recall one of the problems with images is that members were posting directly from the ''source'' rather than from an image hosting site.

When the source changes their format that will cause that image to do wonky things like not appear at all....or ever.

I've never had any problem with Photobucket....yet. :) :previous:
