So it was "Little Thin Hot Cakes" (I had said "Little Thin Hot Pancakes"...so I was close. ;)) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...540/4WGrf8.png detail / to see the full Kodachrome slide go here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=31109 Here's a 1940 photograph of the Melody Lane before the lettering on the façade advertising "LTHC" and "Fountain Service". http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...540/srcFrt.jpg http://miraclemilela.com/the-miracle...s/melody-lane/ above: If you look closely, "Melody Lane Wilshire" in neon script is above that decorative rectangle with six small squares. below: I just found this closer view that better shows the neon (I believe it says "of" within the loop of the Y). The outdoor patio looks quite festive! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...673/EAmNHF.jpg http://miraclemilela.com/the-miracle...ne-wilshire-2/ :previous::previous: *hmm..I just noticed something rather obvious. The second tier (enclosed space) in the Kodachrome slide is missing in the black and white photographs. So the attractive outdoor patio space was sacrificed Souvenir Menu, showing the lost outdoor patio area. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...540/ZPwCYo.jpg http://miraclemilela.com/the-miracle...souvenir-menu/ _ |

I've posted vintage slides of neon with multiple exposures before on NLA, but the following two are new to NLA.
And the first shows the "Melody Lane of Wilshire" that I mentioned earlier tonight. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/909/5WXLnW.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Sli...item5d5d3d21ef below: Luxury Beer ? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/Kn2QFI.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Sli...item51d817cb03 Luxury Beer bottle cap, 1937. asking: $31.99 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...538/Tv72NK.jpg http://www.taverntrove.com/item.php?...&intResults=20 Los Angeles Brewing Co. Is anyone interested in buying a 1950s Los Angeles Street Light?
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...913/O7ODRw.jpg eBay below: Surprisingly (to me anyway), the glass 'globe' is actually kind of beautiful. (it appears to have a flame motif) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...673/cEDMSq.jpg eBay If interested, place your bid here: ;) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-City...item4af0f8f04c __ |

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/Z2pn8r.jpg :previous: I think the large building with the maroon roof might be the "Victor Hugo". __ This 'greenish' building in the upper right corner of the slide caught my eye (it looks like a cross between a Ball Park & a Drive-In Theater) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/540/Gy7ccb.jpg detail Does anyone know what is it? __ |
Sandy Vitale Dance Studio in Gardena
I'd like to bring up an interesting old building in Gardena that I don't think has been seen before on NLA. It is on the NW corner of Western Avenue and 166th street.
There is a classic neon sign on the corner that is faded out but you can still see the building was once was the home of the "Sandy Vitale Dance Studio". The address of the dance studio is 1807 w 166th street and the front of the building has the address 16535 S Western Ave. Strangely enough, I believe there is still a dance studio in operation on the upper floor although it remains a bit of a mystery to me who runs it. I believe I read or heard somewhere that at one time the building served as a courthouse but don't quote me on that. If any of the super sleuths on here can provide some information on what must surely be an interesting past I would be interested to know. That is an a nice old building as well. I remember when it was still a bar about 20 years ago. The Moneta name is prominent around Gardena. It was an area that was included when Gardena incorporated in 1930. You still see the name associated with various businesses including a great nursery on Vermont ave. |

Signs saying "Culver Center" and "Culver Center Fish Market" made this Julius Shulman location much easier to identify! On the left is Market Basket. This is "Job 1538: Bank of America,1953".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Here's a wider view from a little way east. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original And a reverse view looking east along Venice Boulevard. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute The building is still a branch of Bank of America, although it's acquired an indent halfway up the wall. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original GSV This is the house on the right of the third Shulman photo. It doesn't seem to have changed much in 62 years. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original GSV Also still standing are these houses between the bank and the house above. I wonder if they were always this color. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original GSV We saw some more vintage pictures of Culver Center, including the other side of the Market Basket Sign, in tovangar2's post # 27368 back in March. |

Speaking of Feliz Chevrolet (3300 block of Figueroa if memory serves), here it is last Tuesday as seen from West Jefferson Blvd:
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/765/2...3fb8d7bf_c.jpgL1290004.JPG by Matt Maxwell, on Flickr And here's an atmospheric shot of the lot, which one could imagine all kinds of things going down in, 'cept that it's in plain sight of the USC dorm on the other side of South Figueroa. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5752/...be9c7071_c.jpgL1290012.JPG by Matt Maxwell, on Flickr Sorry for the blur. I was being lazy and didn't haul the tripod out. That same night I tracked down the Bullocks Wilshire building, which is pretty astonishing in person, and the insane neon clown from Circus Liquor in North Hollywood. |
:previous: Beautiful pix MM!

I'm convinced every other one was once painted pink (close to 40 years ago, but my memory is a bit hazy these days). It made them look like petti fours. The property last changed hands in 1970. They were two-toned back in the day: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...7%252520PM.jpg detail from quoted post |

Funny thing is...I thought it was a state law that all license plates issued by the DMV must be reflective. Obviously they made a special exception for these? |

Note the CA licence plates. They could be props but they're of that era. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...pszcvhy01v.jpg Pinit |
