Here's a 1940 photograph of the Melody Lane before the lettering on the façade advertising "LTHC" and "Fountain Service".

:previous::previous: *hmm..I just noticed something rather obvious. The second tier (enclosed space) in the Kodachrome slide is missing in the black and white photographs.
So the attractive outdoor patio space was sacrificed

I've posted vintage slides of neon with multiple exposures before on NLA, but the following two are new to NLA.

And the first shows the "Melody Lane of Wilshire" that I mentioned earlier tonight.

Sandy Vitale Dance Studio in Gardena

I'd like to bring up an interesting old building in Gardena that I don't think has been seen before on NLA. It is on the NW corner of Western Avenue and 166th street.
There is a classic neon sign on the corner that is faded out but you can still see the building was once was the home of the "Sandy Vitale Dance Studio". The address of the dance studio is 1807 w 166th street and the front of the building has the address 16535 S Western Ave. Strangely enough, I believe there is still a dance studio in operation on the upper floor although it remains a bit of a mystery to me who runs it.
I believe I read or heard somewhere that at one time the building served as a courthouse but don't quote me on that.
If any of the super sleuths on here can provide some information on what must surely be an interesting past I would be interested to know.

Across the street is the old, ca 1918 Moneta Bank building, later a rather famous bar called "The Bank Club"
(which took over after the bank went bust in 1931), now a Japanese-American association:

It is really a shame that it was torn down. It was beautiful!. The 1910 Census shows that a William F. Sherwood owned the house and lived there with his wife Bertha. Mr. Sherwood was listed in censuses as being in Mining and in one directory as a gold miner. One directory shows him at that address in 1909, but earlier in 1901 he was at 515 S. Olive. I can't find who built the house.

Thanks Tovanger,
That is an a nice old building as well. I remember when it was still a bar about 20 years ago. The Moneta name is prominent around Gardena. It was an area that was included when Gardena incorporated in 1930.
You still see the name associated with various businesses including a great nursery on Vermont ave.

Signs saying "Culver Center" and "Culver Center Fish Market" made this Julius Shulman location much easier to identify! On the left is Market Basket. This is "Job 1538: Bank of America,1953".

The building is still a branch of Bank of America, although it's acquired an indent halfway up the wall.

This is the house on the right of the third Shulman photo. It doesn't seem to have changed much in 62 years.

We saw some more vintage pictures of Culver Center, including the other side of the Market Basket Sign, in tovangar2's post # 27368 back in March.

Here we see cars with fake or painted on whitewall tires. Due to white rubber shortages during the Korean War, whitewall tires were not available.

Did you see the latest request for posters to please stop hotlinking?

It looks like the California State Library has reorganized their storage system, because a few other posts from around that time also have missing hotlinked CSL images. This is the danger of hotlinking, and happened earlier in the thread when USC changed their storage system. I'd hate to think how many images we'd lose if LAPL changed their system. What we're left with is posts with very little information, and links to non-existent images. Please stop hotlinking to images. It doesn't take long to set up a image host like ImageShack, Flickr or Photobucket, and you get so much more control over the images you post. You're no longer reliant on the original image staying online, and you get a chance to crop and scale images, tweak levels and use screengrabs.

While I'm having my two cents, can people please stop quoting lengthy, image-heavy posts just to add a line or two underneath. I'm not the first person to raise this issue, but it seems to be happening more again at the moment. I realize that the thought of editing quotes probably scares some members, but it's really not that hard. The messaging system handles quotes in virtually the same way as the forum, so if anyone wants to practice editing quotes privately, feel free to PM me.

There are now many NLA posts whose images, because they were hotlinked, no longer display. For example, all the images in this post of yours have disappeared, and only dead links and your small, hard-to-read purple font remain: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=17906

Sorry for the blur. I was being lazy and didn't haul the tripod out.

That same night I tracked down the Bullocks Wilshire building, which is pretty astonishing in person, and the insane neon clown from Circus Liquor in North Hollywood.

I've loved those little 1941 houses for decades, so plain except for the little caps over the doors and some star-spangled shutters. They would be so fun to do up and landscape. There's a total of 18 units.

I'm convinced every other one was once painted pink (close to 40 years ago, but my memory is a bit hazy these days). It made them look like petti fours.

The property last changed hands in 1970.

They were two-toned back in the day:

The throwback plates are a great idea, although when I was a kid I thought this particular vintage was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen. :P Love yours, though!

Funny thing is...I thought it was a state law that all license plates issued by the DMV must be reflective. Obviously they made a special exception for these?

Note the CA licence plates. They could be props but they're of that era.
