Okay, I have to admit I'm a sucker for the understated elegance of a combination of Art Deco and Streamline Modern interiors. Same holds true for exteriors which have no Art Nouveau leaning garbage embellishing them. In the above we see understated elegance while at the same time presenting an interior retail space that beckons one to return in the future. Timeless! BifRayRock thanks for digging up these great photos, they have motivated me to dust off the drafting table and get busy drawing the plans for a new home which will have Streamline Modern interior leanings with the exterior having both Streamline Modern and the Frank Lloyd Wright leanings. Darn, now I'm going to have to go looking for acreage that will be the right showcase. |

some Richfield Building photos -- not in search results, but...?
Enjoyed revisiting the Richfield Building yesterday - thanks!
Undated postcard: http://ladailymirror.files.wordpress.../richfield.jpg Mary Mallory Richfield Building's Elevator: http://ladailymirror.files.wordpress...ngelevator.jpg 1960's: http://ladailymirror.files.wordpress...ingalonebw.jpg From article: http://ladailymirror.com/richfield-building-los-angeles-skyline/ A quote: The Richfield Co. merged with Atlantic Refining Co. in 1966, and decided that the building was not producing enough revenue. [...] Louis Ream informed The Times on March 9, 1967, that “We’d like to think as big as possible – the economics of a site like this dictates that we do.” He claimed, “The building is beautiful, but it is only 52% usable. We’re planning on tearing it down, with tears in our eyes.” ...and if you believe that...meet me at the Brown Derby for a Cobb Salad. |
An end to drudgery?
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Q...CT0013-002.JPG I took the picture above in the late 80's. I think I am on the western end of Melrose. The building next door had just been demolished and this well preserved sign was seeing the light of day for the first time in years. I can't find any info on the Block washing machine. |

Boutique franchises may try, but they rarely approximate the imaginative opulence evidenced in this thread. LA never had a monopoly on impressive man-made gilded and/or streamlined surroundings. NY, Boston, Chicago, SF, Dallas and many other communities come to mind. However, rightly or wrongly, LA seems to have devalued more of its structural bounty than so many other communities. This even includes examples of "art nouveau" (555 Flower) and plaster quirks/whimsy like Wilshire’s Brown Derby. Fortunately, many treasures survive. *Gone. http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...s/012416pr.jpghttp://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...s/012416pr.jpg http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...eet/00013r.jpghttp://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...eet/00013r.jpg http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...s/012404pr.jpghttp://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...s/012404pr.jpg http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...s/012424pr.jpghttp://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...s/012424pr.jpg http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...s/012442pr.jpghttp://lcweb2.loc.gov/pnp/habshaer/c...s/012442pr.jpg |

More Streamline Moderne?
756 Waring Ave. This '36 building has often been referred to as the "Wallace Berry duplex." Sources indicate the building was built for WB and reflected his interest in aviation. Why would WB have needed, let alone wanted, a duplex? Any images of the structure when first built or during construction? http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3219/3...b3a2471f_b.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3219/3...b3a2471f_b.jpg WB in '29 http://www.ci.glendale.ca.us/gcatg/i...lace_beery.jpghttp://www.ci.glendale.ca.us/gcatg/i...lace_beery.jpg |

The artwork is probably far more memorable than the washer. Knowing a little more about the store advertising it could be interesting. "A.C . . ." "432 So. B" Is that the only image of the billboard? 1928 http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NDgwWDY0MA...dwRg~~60_3.JPGhttp://www.backtothepast.biz/pictures/0/IMG_4209.JPGhttp://www.backtothepast.biz/pictures/0/IMG_4209.JPG Bay hth |
Any excuse for another picture of the Richfield Building. This Dick Whittington shot is labeled 1929, which is around the time the building was completed. The panels above and below the windows look lighter than in later shots. I'm not sure whether it's the lighting or if they were darkened sometime afterward.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original USC Digital Library The first floor is still boarded up in the photo. The advertisements say "Stores & Building For Rent". The real estate agent handling the property is Joe Toplitzky at 205-9 H. W. Hellman Bldg. - GW posted some info about Joe Toplitzky here. It looks like the hoardings included some fancy embellishments, possibly echoing details of higher floors. The second floor also seems more elaborately decorated than in later images. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original Detail of picture above. |
