Back in the 1950s I went to school around the corner from this building located at 3rd and Western. At the time it was a Citizen Savings Bank and my dad opened my first passbook savings account there. Does anyone know the history of this building or have any early photos? It's art deco and looks like it dates from the early 1930s.

Former I. Magnin & Co. store at Wilshire and New Hampshire Ave. Now a mini-mall, but several of the deco features on the main floor are preserved as is the "motor court" at the rear of the building which was actually one of the store's two "main" entrances. Along with Bullocks-Wilshire, among the first American stores designed to accommodate customers who drove to shop instead of walking.

"Hodgepodge" is putting it mildly, ER. To me, it's a mostly hideous collection; I guess there are always collectors for this kind of stuff, but while there used to be a number of stores near my apt in NY crammed with it, there is now really only one and it looks like it's been closed for awhile. I guess this means the current owners of the Higgins-Verbeck are moving on, if they haven't expired. It would be great if the house could receive an sensitive update, including ripping out some of the overdone landscaping.... I'm afraid the house is too close to Wilshire and too close to the office building on the corner to make it a prime recepticle for a huge amount of renovation dollars. And I know I'm fantasizing to think that it might be moved once again, this time to a location away from major thoroughfares. Anybody got a quieter lot in Windsor Square/Hancock Park?
