Edit: Relying on memory has gotten me into trouble before, so you'd think I 'd know better. The above comment is simply incorrect after doing a bit of searching to support (disclaim) it. The above photo is very similar to the one in the road trip album I mention, but in fact it is not the same. The following link is a sideshow of the album I speak of, though it is from 1915 where two FRIENDS take a road trip. It starts with a photo of the departure point in Hollywood, 1837 Canyon Drive. The site also shows a then and now photo of the house. http://www.boomcalifornia.com/2013/0...uct-road-trip/ Andys |

What a cool find ER! I admit I don't recall ever hearing of Bebe Daniels before but upon further investigation I discovered a very interesting person indeed. Thanks! I was totally captivated by that photo and needed to know more. She stared in The Wonderful Wizard of OZ film as a child actress in 1910. Who do you think W.T. Jr is? Her beach home in Santa Monica at 1022 Palisades Beach Road: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yCl3roEMcc...ousestreet.JPG I'll bet this fan would love that photo. http://myloveofoldhollywood.blogspot...1901-1971.html |

:previous: Thanks for the tip Handsome Strange. I'll try it out.
__ CityBoyDoug, I appreciate your help with negatives of the 1918 parade photos. :) |
I just came across these two photographs of a gas station at 5301 Melrose Avenue.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/wopLg4.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gilmore-Gas-...item3cee74e1a6 If you look closely you can see Gilmore items as well. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/SbFusO.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gilmore-Gas-...item3cee74e1a6 The site today is a Paramount Studio parking lot. We've seen many, and I mean many, photographs of the northwest corner of Hollywood & Vine on NLA-
but here's one we haven't seen...a slide dated 1959. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/674/KvERm1.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-195...item4ae1d04001 I love the 'Fly United DC-7' billboard. __ |

It's also interesting to note that television station KTLA was situated so closely, as it was then owned by Paramount. (Any guesses as to the name of the cafe seen behind Norma Desmond?) The little cafe on the corner still existed in 1961, as can be seen in this aerial shot from The Errand Boy: https://33.media.tumblr.com/591dbc10...rtso4_1280.jpg [source: Paramount Pictures] When did Paramount take over this block to add a parking lot? The magnificent Bronson gate still exists but it's quite difficult to see from Melrose Ave. |
:previous: I'm glad you posted these vintage images Handsome Stranger.
When I was looking for the gas station, I too was surprised by how much Paramount had expanded south of the iconic arched gate. I was also confused. -so Valentino Place is now private...didn't it used to be a public street? (was it named Valentino Place back then, or did Paramount rename it?)* I also noticed this apartment building on the other side of the Paramount 'shrub' fence/wall, as seen from Melrose. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/904/WoZM75.png GSV below: Here it is in an aerial of the apartment building, now located on Paramount property. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/WN3cel.png google_earth The orange oval at upper right is the old (famous) Paramount gate. __ Here's the new arched main entrance at Melrose and Windsor. (seen at lower left in the above aerial / with the distinct shadow) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/DM4AMU.png GSV *I just re-read Handsome_Stranger's post. He places the old Paramount gate at Bronson and Marathon. (I had forgotten that) __ |
Here's a slide, dated 1952, showing an elaborate advertisement for the film Macao.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/f6eGow.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-195...item339a6fcea9 Does anyone have an idea where this was located? (I see there's a Drama School at left) --and quite a bit of litter on the ground and along the curb. __ |

We've reached another viewing landmark on NLA tonight, so I've done another building makeover to celebrate. The building on the right was originally the Gates, but I've changed it as a tribute to ethereal_reality. Thanks to ethereal_reality and everyone else who continues to keep this thread interesting and entertaining :).

:previous: I didn't notice Dan-Dee's until you pointed it out TWS. -thanks
Here's a fantastic slide dated 1952 of the American Broadcast Company (KECA) on Vine Street. (and what a clear blue sky!) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/904/A2oykV.jpg found last night on eBay _ I never expected to see my name up in lights (and on a rooftop sign to boot). Thank you HossC. You're the best. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/7mojc0.jpg originally posted by HossC below: I've been meaning to post this, and now seems like a good time to do so. This is the first time I've noticed flags flying on the roof.* http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/7ukkom.jpg eBay Is it a case of artistic license? -or were they really there? * I stand corrected. I just looked at HossC's postcard again and I see flagpoles in the darkness!! I just went back in the thread and yes there ARE flagpoles there....but none seem to have flags flying. Here's a huge photo of the Richfiield Building showing the flagless flagpoles. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=10345 __ update: Here's a group of photograph I posted way back on page 5...and yes, one photo has flags flying. < I'm red faced. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...0&postcount=88 |
