This photo is from a family album documenting a road trip by a father and son, where they visit points of interest along the LA Aqueduct. The album is available to view on the NET, but I can't recall where at the moment. One of the California library sites.

Edit: Relying on memory has gotten me into trouble before, so you'd think I 'd know better. The above comment is simply incorrect after doing a bit of searching to support (disclaim) it. The above photo is very similar to the one in the road trip album I mention, but in fact it is not the same. The following link is a sideshow of the album I speak of, though it is from 1915 where two FRIENDS take a road trip. It starts with a photo of the departure point in Hollywood, 1837 Canyon Drive. The site also shows a then and now photo of the house.

Raybestos is still a major brand in brake parts. There are Raybestos pads on both of my cars right now, in fact - purchased from O'Reilly Auto Parts although it looks like they don't carry that brand anymore. Perhaps that was a contract left over from the acquisition of Checker/Schuck's/Kragen.

Nice find! I've wondered about that Southeast corner of the Paramount lot, in part because of how much it has changed from the way it looked in Sunset Boulevard.

It certainly looks as though this was a public street right up to the gate at Bronson and Marathon. It's also interesting to note that television station KTLA was situated so closely, as it was then owned by Paramount. (Any guesses as to the name of the cafe seen behind Norma Desmond?)

The little cafe on the corner still existed in 1961, as can be seen in this aerial shot from The Errand Boy:

When did Paramount take over this block to add a parking lot? The magnificent Bronson gate still exists but it's quite difficult to see from Melrose Ave.

When I was looking for the gas station, I too was surprised by how much Paramount had expanded south of the iconic arched gate.
I was also confused. -so Valentino Place is now private...didn't it used to be a public street?
(was it named Valentino Place back then, or did Paramount rename it?)*

I also noticed this apartment building on the other side of the Paramount 'shrub' fence/wall, as seen from Melrose.

Does anyone have an idea where this was located? (I see there's a Drama School at left) --and quite a bit of litter on the ground and along the curb.

As has already been pointed out, this part of N Bronson is no longer open to the public or the Googlemobile, but it appears to have been the 700 block. That means that the café must have been Oblath's at 723 N Bronson. It appears in the CDs from 1929 until 1973, with the earlier ones giving its owner's name as Izso Oblath.

Historic Aerials has images from 1948 and 1952 (just either side of 'Sunset Boulevard'), so I went for the earlier 1948 view because it's clearer. The café is just to the left of the "N" of the upper "N Bronson Avenue" label. Could that be e_r's United Service Station on the corner of Melrose and Van Ness? The Valentino Place apartments in e_r's later post also appear on the image below. It looks like Marathon Street used to go all the way across to Van Ness, with a little kink before it reached N Bronson. Both Historic Aerials and Bing Maps show Marathon Street continuing west of N Bronson, with N Valentino Place being the north-south street to the left of the apartments.

The building on the right was originally the Gates, but I've changed it as a tribute to ethereal_reality. I just went back in the thread and yes there ARE flagpoles there....but none seem to have flags flying.
