The car doesn't look like a LAPD pollce car but the streetlight tells me it's possibly Los Angeles. (the seller seems to think it's Los Angeles)

Calling all cars... or at least SHERIFF PAUL's: even under high magnification, I can't quite make out the city name on the driver's door, nor get any detail on the seal. I can read "City of ________ (all one word?) Police Department" and "RADIO PATROL". I'd also note that monochrome police cars seemed to be the exception. Any thoughts, SP?

Also noting the street furniture: the traffic signal mounted to the lamppost on the corner is smallish, has only two lights and makes no provision for cross traffic. If it's a streetcar signal (are/were those rails toward the bottom of the frame?), that might explain the unusual nature. But I don't remember seeing those employed at intersections in/around Los Angeles.

A quick check of the L.A. City Directories showed a Stein's Coffee Shop on Melrose Ave., but that's all.

The AI in my brain is telling me the cop car says City of La Verne Police Dept.

Was the a Stein's Clothiers in La Verne in 1954?

I was looking through that's seller's auctions, and came across this (unlabeled) photo of the intersection of Hollywood Blvd, N. Vermont, and Prospect. You can see Sardo's Sarno's in the background.

For what it's worth, the Stein's in L.A.--which obviously is not the corner one in the photo--was at 632 S. Broadway, at least in 1938:

You are correct, BDiH, I meant Sarno's. I always confuse the name with Sardo's, which was a bar just a few blocks away from me in Burbank. They opened in 1968, but closed in 2017.

I thought I recognized this apartment building but the one I was thinking of is located on an east - west street. (the name of the street has slipped from my memory)

The Arlington Grand was located at 2825 South Grand Ave.

I checked past posts using "Arlington". There are numerous Arlington's mentioned on NLA, like Arlington Manor. HERE . . .but I didn't find any mention of an 'Arlington Grand'.

The Arlington Grand still stands...at 1920 West 25th St, just south of the Rindge house. Relocated in 1951. Note the fire escape...

Did the owner(s) over the years let the columns rot until they finally had to be removed? or were the columns removed to 'modernize' the look of the apartment bldg?
