Ughh! Personal pet peeve:
London is an insanely awesome and powerful city; Why did they have to go and put an amusement ride right in the middle of it! I know it's been a big success but ferris wheels in big cities IMO make great, impressive cities look like a stupid carnival. And this is coming from me, in the city where the ferris wheel was invented. STOP the proliferation of ferris wheels!!

I had NO idea Barcelona was laid out like this. I mean, this is Paris density and impressiveness. I knew Barcelona was intense but this is an eye opener. Does anyone know if Madrid is similar looking? Is Madrid bigger or smaller than Barcelona in terms of density and scale?

This is so beautiful. What a great city. Natural setting and dense CBD. One of the best cities in the world.

This is the area of Barcelona called l'Eixample (the "extension"). It's north-northwest of the "old city" (nearer the harbor), between that area and Barceloneta (which is slightly older and had been a separate village, kind of like Greenwich Village in NYC), I think. It's not a huge area, just a few square miles, but has a lot of the nicer hotels and restaurants in town.

Anyway, much like the Paris neighborhoods designed by Hausmann, it was built mostly in the late 19th century.

I was in Barcelona for a few days 15 years ago - I was awed by how huge it felt. It compared easily with London, Paris, New York. It is truly a world class city and vastly under rated in my opinion. The center is huge and super dense. But I think the suburban belt is kind of thin, relative to other big European cities, which explains the relatively low metro population of ~6 million or so. Most of them are packed into a 10-sq mile area.

I can believe that just from those two pictures

Madrid is larger of course. And has areas just as dense, although the dense areas seem more medieval (not such an organized street plan)

lots of aerial footage in this video

Actually it's extremely easy to find your way around. The area in those pictures, after all, is on a grid. And there and elsewher, you pretty much always know which direction the sea is because the land slopes downward...

Wow, those Barcelona shots are amazing. And Tokyo is surrealistically massive. It looks like it would take you a week to get from one side to the other!
