I found this on the USC Archive; the caption said that it shows Crenshaw looking south, with a car crossing it at 48th Street, 1930-1939.

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/5...shawlookin.jpg

WRONG.

I saw the lamp posts and immediately knew that this shows Olympic Boulevard, being that those lamp posts are the "Olympic Specials." It's nice to see them here with their original teardrop luminaires. So, this is actually looking west along Olympic Boulevard at Crenshaw. You can even see the tower of Los Angeles High School to the left. This is where residential 10th Street branches off, though today, 10th Street no longer directly intersects with Olympic and Crenshaw. 10th Street is now closed at S. Victoria Avenue, and a landscaped grassy triangle has been created on that corner, with a driveway to a Rite Aid.

Vons Supermarket apparently was celebrating its 33rd anniversary in this picture, so that would date it to 1939.

I knew from the lamp posts cause' they're olympic specials??!!??

S EJ! you're amazing!:worship: amazing catch due to the oly's!

a few skid row images from pre-skid days. these are all focused around the intersection of towne and 5th

looking northwest from towne and 5th 1890. is that the bradbury mansion up at court and hill in the center of the photograph? the other two large structures would be the courthouse and the newly completed Los Angeles School building

i shookdown my san diego mark, and got back into town with a satisfying thickness in my breast pocket sometime late after midnight. as tired as i was, a stiff three finger was what i needed.........good thing it was a short walk to salvation

here is his last paragraph in his 6/15/10 "144 S. Grand Revealed" post over at onbunkerhill.org

(Speaking of modern structures on the Hill, remind me sometime to tell y'all about 353 South Hope. The Stuart K. Oliver residence was built on the site of the Hildreth mansion's adjacent carriage house ca. 1952, and Oliver didn't want to sell or move. Stalled the CRA for years. The house was demolished around 1969.)

ok beaudry, consider this sometime and now's i'm remindin' ya! do tell....do tell!

the house is visible in all except the 1971 north/east aerial views above, (most notably the 1964 image)

here is the link to my original posting about the Stuart K. Oliver House

Now, ethereal, you know it pains me to correct you...but I hope you will see it as correcting the historical record.... This is actually a shot of 7th Street at the south side of MacArthur Park, looking northwest. While Bullock's tower appears to be along the street in the picture, actually it is not. The LARY "R" line followed 7th--if 7th continued straight without its westerly jog at Hoover, it would run directly to the Bullock building's northwest corner. (Btw, on its westbound run, the "R" line followed 7th to Vermont to 3rd to La Brea.)

Wow, and I thought I knew my way around USC and I hadn't seen this wonderful evocative neony image. One thing though, it's nowhere near Pico...though very near the Pico House which is a stone's throw N up Main...this is the 300 block of N Main, just down from the Baker Block. Check out here and here -- it all came down in the Spring of '57 and you now know this part of the world as Bowron Square with the Triforium and such.
