Not the greatest but there is this photograph.

The mansion was refitted as the Jewish Orphans Home in 1908 but burned down a year and a half later in 1910.

That's fantastic, thanks so much! Years ago I came across some older aerials of Burbank, but they weren't very clear and I couldn't pick out many details of my neighborhood.

I've long wondered about the history of the big pine trees, which line nearly the while length of Niagara Street in Burbank. They were one reason I bought my house back in '85...they reminded me of my home town in northern California. I've inquired with the city and asked a few local historians, but no one seems to have any idea why they were planted here. They keep our street nice and shady in the summer time but drip sap onto everyone's cars, so they're a mixed blessing. 25 or 30 years ago a big one fell down, right across the roof of a neighbor's cherished vintage car. Though terrible for him, it was kind of amusing to see. I took a photo before the city came out to remove the tree. Maybe I'll dig it up and post it here. (The photo, not the tree.)

It's been a great neighborhood. We used to have a restaurant / club called Chadney's at Niagara and Olive. It had a jazz room in the basement where some great musicians would show up to play. It burned down many years ago. Dick Clark Productions was across the street from Chadneys and of course NBC was just two blocks away. Sometimes I'd walk over there in the late afternoon to catch a taping of the Tonight Show.

I used to be one of the youngest homeowners on my block. But that was a long ago, and since then most of my older neighbors have passed away. Now, I'm one of the old timers here!

hey 3940dxer, you're a neighbor- I'm on Naomi south of Clark. There's a dandy aerial from 1928 on the City of Burbank site. (It's in .pdf format, use + sign to zoom).
http://gis.burbankca.gov/maps/City_of_Burbank_1928.pdf

this is our neighborhood....looks like the trees have yet to be planted on Niagara. I live across from a long-gone natural feature (circled), a depression that I first noticed on old topos, and confirmed the existence of from my 94 year-old neighbor across the street, who complains that the plaster on her walls is cracking because they did a slipshod job of filling it in. More striped plots a couple blocks west, could they have been commercial flower fields?

It looks like that map in the PDF file is made up of several images from mil.library.ucsb.edu stitched together (with an area border and street names added). The PDF map shows a much wider area than the individual aerials, but I think the originals are higher resolution and therefore a little sharper.

As a reminder, the full version of the aerial I posted can be found here.

Let's take a closer look at the. . .

That's the old base station of the Los Angeles and Mount Washington Railway Company, which we've covered before. It's current address is 200 W Avenue 43 (on the corner of Marmion Way).

Thanks, N_N.

Charles Stern was killed in a streetcar/train collision on Macy Street, not far from his winery and home, on December 30, 1903.

I think that's the Eagle Rock location at 1801 Colorado Boulevard. Both buildings are still standing.

I can't answer the questions about Chicken Enuff or the mascot, but I can give the location. It's Scrivner's at 6407 Sunset Boulevard. GW gave us this picture back in 2012. I think the building on the far left of the image above is still standing.

I'm thinking this is Bob's Big Boy #5, 1801 Colorado BLVD., Eagle Rock, CA. Here's a Pinterest post of a photo that's part of the BRUCE B. HERMANN COLLECTIONS and posted on FaceBook as well as Pinterest. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/13933080082105886/

Looks like Popeye with a sailor cap with a chicken lower half. The Chicken "Enuff"(?) may mean that all they serve is chicken, because it is enough to eat (with a side of creamed spinach for Popeye).

I don't know what the current use of that building is (house? apartments?), but it really should be renovated on the exterior to match the historical photo- seems like it would be easy to do, too.

... Also would make a perfect location for the long-rumored NLA clubhouse... just a thought!

Bob's big boy 1965 menu and list of locations

Well, this is frustrating. I was trying to post a FACEBOOK photo of a Bob's Big Boy menu from 1965 with it's list of locations. None of the "buttons" on the Edit page are working for me. Anyway, click on the above link for a bit of BBB history. The photo is part of the BRUCE B. HERMANN COLLECTION.

Here's the menu. I just right-clicked on the Facebook image, copied the image location, and pasted it into the post using the Insert Image button.

BTW. Hollywood Photographs has three 1958 images of the Scrivner's on Sunset, including a larger version of GW's picture which I posted above. You can see them here.

Thank you very much, HossC. I tried that various ways and it didn't work for me. I still don't know why. Do I need the Administrator's permission to post?

Bob Wian was one of my father's law clients until Bob tried to quitclaim on his mother's house. I guess Bob needed some cash. That ended my father being his attorney.

We also no longer had any meals at Bob's restaurant.

I'm not aware of any special permissions needed to post. You could also try uploading the picture to one of the many image hosting sites - we had some recommendations a few weeks ago.

Feel free to send me a PM about it - the messaging system works in an almost identical way to the forum regarding pictures, so you can practice there.

Good find, Hoss! I looked everywhere and found nothing.

The mascot is more recognizable on the street level sign than the one up on the cylindrical tower.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/75gVIO.jpg

His wand looks like wand and less like a whisk broom.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/Nn3J4k.jpg

I still see the Pink Panther in a top hat. :runaway:

I also noticed something surprising.

If you look closely, there is a cocktail sign beneath the overhang.

Link. Original eBay photograph
I wasn't aware that Scrivner's had a liquor license!

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/4Yn2Af.jpg

Is this a mini-cocktail lounge or did Scrivner's serve drinks to the costumers in their cars?

Did all the drive-ins serve cocktails back then?
