I found a couple of newspapers from the '60s which list Biff's at 18130 Sherman Way, but this later advert says 18134 Sherman Way.

Ed Ruscha has been deservedly talked about on NLA before. Here's a new
short video put online at Vimeo three weeks ago about him and his work:

One thing I learned is how you pronounce his name. I'd never heard anyone
say it out loud before and the way I thought you'd pronounce it isn't correct.

How do you think it's pronounced? Hit play and
you'll know at around the twenty second mark.

Today's Julius Shulman photos show Blum's, a restaurant apparently known for its desserts. This is "Job 1568: Blum's (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1953".

Martin Pal, did you spot this sign on the right?

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

Here's another view of the exterior.

I've left out about half of the interior shots, but I liked this one of a circular bar area.

There's some tasty-looking confectionery in this counter.

The last picture I've chosen shows a dining area with strange, tree-like decorations.

All from Getty Research Institute

Blum's was at 314 N Camden Drive, later moving to 9454 Wilshire Boulevard. The Camden Drive location is now the site of an office block. The Coffee Dan's was at 9561 Wilshire Boulevard. I think The Grill on the Alley is now in that building (their address is given as 9560 Dayton Way, the road behind) - the upright sign looks the same.

:previous: I could be wrong Hoss, but I believe Blum's rather surreal interior might be a Tony Duquette creation.

My first clue was this 'birdcage'. (and that circus-like striped canopy over the circular bar in the other pic)

Yes, HossC, The Grill on the Alley is now where Coffee Dan's was located. When you discovered interior shots of this Coffee Dan's in a previous post, I was surprised to discover it was where The Grill is now because I know someone who currently works there. The Grill on the Alley is a low key high-powered Hollywood hangout for producers, deal makers and the like, (there's several talent agencies and production company places in the vicinity), but also is frequented by other celebrities. According to my acquaintance it is also quite a small place. It's become even more crowded since another eatery with much the same clientele, that my friend worked at previously, closed, Kate Mantilini's. (It didn't have to.)

The picture you posted is not the entrance used for this place, it is around the back "on the alley" as it's name implies.

http://s3-media2.fl.yelpcdn.com/bpho...-vkXA/258s.jpgyelp

I have never been inside, even with a discount my friend could allow me to have I can't afford it! He rarely talks about, or brings up, any of the people who dine there, but if I ask "Anyone interesting been in lately" he will tell me.

Patrons of note in the last couple months have been:

Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood (my friend noted he was sitting next to an empty chair), Nancy Pelosi, Shirley MacLaine, Mel Brooks, John Kerry (with Secret Service), Kamala Harris (running for Senator), Steve Wozniak, two young marines in full uniform and Carol Burnett.

What bothers me most about the destruction of the Bergstrom Estate is that it was designed to survive earthquakes...it would have stood for years!

Years after Biff's in Reseda closed, Boogie Nights was filmed all over that area, including the famous scene in the car with Dirk Diggler. It was shot in the the drive way adjacent to the site.

Much as I miss Coffee Dan's, and I do, there is no finer restaurant than the Grill on the Alley in Beverly Hills. Phil Spector dined there the night he had a Navy Grog at the old Trader Vic's and stopped at the House of Blues to pick up Lana Clarkson.

I used to do telecom work for Grill Concepts (the parent company) and have eaten at all their restaurants. I'd have to rate their food as "satisfactory, but not worth the price". It's basically upscale diner/american cuisine. The meatballs in their spaghetti don't have enough bread crumbs in them! As noted, it's mostly a place to be seen rather than a place to get really good food (unfortunately).

These small homes on the west side of 107th street are all gone now with one exception at the corner of 107th street and Graham Avenue.

As for the chair on the roof......I have no answer.

__

Simon Rodia, worked on the towers for 34 years, beginning in 1921. He died in 1965, the year this picture was taken. Maybe the neighbor would sit up there and watch the progress on the towers. We don't know how long the chair was up there, but it is facing in that direction.

Another possibility was that someone would go up there with a level and make sure that the towers were straight, either Rodia or the neighbor....

Martin Pal, I thought you'd find this chart from the Hollywood Reporter interesting.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...924/wZHOaP.jpg
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...ltimate-676885

"A large part of the restaurant's success is its horseshoe layout, with 14 booths surrounding a central 'Siberia' of 25 tables,
meaning a third of the house is prime seating.

The late Bernie Brillstein nicknamed the largest corner rear booth (No. 133) "Devil's Island" since no regulars claim it.
Pamela Gonyea assigns the table, which can seat seven, to random larger groups.

The smaller booths along the side walls are just as prime, often preferred for their comparative privacy.
"Some people just want to be seen," explains Gonyea. "Others, they go: 'We don't care if we see anybody.
In fact, we'd rather not see anybody!' " While Silverman finds the side booths, which front on a narrow aisle, "a little claustrophobic,"
others like AFI chair Bob Daly "just like the privacy."

I would no doubt be stuck at table #221 ;), ground zero in 'Siberia'.

LOL. Just so long as no one was laughing at his meal. You see, his meal don't like people laughing ;).

By coincidence, today's Julius Shulman post shows the buildings across the street from The Grill on the Alley. This is "Job 6285: 9560 Wilshire Building (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1985". A note in the summary says "Photography credit to Carlos von Frankenberg." The first shows Bonwit Teller on the corner of S Rodeo Drive.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original

Here's the other end of the block on the corner of S Camden Drive.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

The color images are virtually the same, but I thought I'd include them anyway. I've just noticed that the same battered white Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon appears in both pictures of this corner, but in different positions. Maybe the driver was looking for somewhere to park.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original

I wasn't familiar with Drexel Burnham Lambert. Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

"Drexel Burnham Lambert was a major Wall Street investment banking firm which was forced into bankruptcy in February 1990 due to its involvement in illegal activities in the junk bond market, driven by Drexel employee Michael Milken."

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original

All from Getty Research Institute

The first floor of the old Bonwit Teller building seems to be occupied, but the blue and white signs say the upper stories are for lease. I'm sure the one-piece windows are more modern, but I prefer the old divided ones.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original
GSV

This side is now Niketown, Dolce & Gabbana and Merrill Lynch, although there are also "For Lease" signs here.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original

Finally, just across S Camden Drive is the building below on the left. It's trying hard to look classical, but it replaced the bank (below, right) which can just be seen on the right of the Shulman pictures. Does anyone have a better picture of the bank?
