......if you overlook the bars on the first floor windows, the cheap fencing serving no useful purpose, and the bushes tortured against nature into shapes worthy of a Dr Suess book by the unskilled Mexican "gardeners".......

What I DID find interesting is that only the front and a small portion of the sides were done in Deco. The rest of the building looks to be plain vanilla brick. So we ask......was that the original construction? My guess is that the place was built @ 1920 or so, and fifteen or twenty or so years later the Deco was tacked on by the owner to keep the property in step with the times.

PS ......there's so much that could be done to beautify that entrance, for very little money, that to see it look like a sack of crap makes me cry. ------ Use the two young queen palms as twin centerpieces (they are only about 10-15 years old......though they f***ed up by planting them too close to the building ), lose the fence, widen the main walk to give a more open feel, lose the lawn and put in some small palms and shrubs beneath the Queen palms, maybe some bolder color paint on the first floor.......it's all so basic and easy and cheap...........

Hey! My wife or I snapped a photo of that place when we were on our way back from a Route 66 road trip on Labor Day weekend, 2011. It is on Foothill Blvd. at Archibald Ave., and is considerably worse for wear:

Looking at the old photo again, it seems that the garage is actually a second building behind the smaller service station out front, and not attached like it may appear. I seem to recall reading that it was on the verge of being torn down. I don't know if it actually has been by now, or if even if I'm remembering that correctly.

Dear malumot... before we accept your renovation proposal, would you mind posting, as aesthetic reference points, photographs of what you have done with your own house? (Or, for that matter, would you mind posting any original content here at all? But I digress.) In addition, would you care to share with us the name of any landscape companies in Southern California (or, at this point, in any other part of the country) who don't hire...er..."Mexicans"? While we are quite happy with our hard-working team, even if its efforts do not please your fine eye, we would be curious about such an anachronism. :D

Wow! I'm surprised that the station posted by BifRayRock still survives. If ProphetM hadn't mentioned a recent sighting, I never would have looked for it. But there it is, on Foothill, near Archibald. The Google Maps aerial shot shown below shows the station with garage section intact.

Unfortunately, the Google Maps street view tells another story. Apparently the property is currently being torn down. But take heart! I'm sure the property will be filled soon by a fast food joint!

Here's an article from 2009 about the station getting landmark status:

It also mentions that the owner was not happy about the new status as it would make it more difficult to tear down. It also says the station closed in 1971.

While the street view shot shows the garage in back in mid-demolition, that was from February 2011. My photo dates from the following September - so the demo event that took the garage did not take the service station.

And in Googling I am finding indications that the station still stands. :)
It is somewhat famous in Route 66 circles (usually described as "the Cucamonga service station"), as Foothill Blvd. was Route 66. I saw a blog post from November mentioning it as still there, and an encouraging Facebook post from just last month where a man said he was part of a group that is trying to save the station.

There is yet hope. :tup:

Not just another pretty set of stairs?

An imposing set of front stairs can be found at 254 Vendome Street 90057(several blocks east of Kingsley). I recall seeing a vintage photo of the building where the stairs subsume most of the building's facade.

To the left of the moorish Bank of America is a glimpse of another interesting set of stairs. Wonder if a full frontal of the building is available?

Oh, to be able to talk to Vlahakis today... he must have had some stories after running downtown bars for 26 years (he died in 1995). Note also that Judge Lamme's log house was apparently called "Rusticana"....

W.N. Snowden's horse market was at 403 Aliso Street...by 1909, he'd moved to 203 S Central. He was still there in 1915, calling the business the Kentucky Auction & Commission Stables. He must have been doing well; home was 133 S Mariposa.

An interesting difference between photos - the building down the street on the right, the one partially blocking the view of the Bradbury Building, seems to have lost two stories in the intervening years.
