It had the look of South LA--I saw what looked like the end of the tracks in the other Federal Cold Storage pic... So followed the old LARy V line west from there...and before long, there was Compton and the house etc. |
Does anyone recognize this building? It doesn't look familiar to me.
"Pasadena, circa 1920s." http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...905/dnjvXq.jpg http://www.ebay.com/itm/PASADENA-CAL...item5d58b75478 It appears to take up a whole block. -and what's that thing with the three globes in the middle of the street? __ |
^^^
Hmmm, I can't imagine where that could be in Pasadena. I've never seen that image before, and I am unfamiliar with that 3-globe thing in the middle of the street... This looks like a cool book to have: Author James Ellroy Explores The Seedy Crimes Of 1953 In Photos http://galleries.gothamistllc.com/as...APD53_p094.jpg LAist |

According to the Old L.A. Restaurants website, that Tourmaline linked, in 1950 the Villa Capri opened at 1735 N. McCadden Place in Hollywood. (It was next door to Don the Beachcomber's restaurant at #1727, which had previously been located on the opposite side of the street.) In 1957, Villa Capri relocated to a larger, plusher building a few blocks away at 6735 Yucca Street, one block north of Hollywood Boulevard.
I could not find any photographs of the Villa Capri on McCadden Place. I did find this one of the 6735 Yucca Street address. It was taken in 1971. http://hollywoodphotographs.com/photos/lrg/RN-154-1.jpg photos all from Bruce Torrence/Hollywood Photographs It turns out this location was not a "few blocks away" as described above. McCadden Place is the first street to the left when you pass Highland Ave. going east on Hollywood Blvd. It only runs about a block long and then hits Yucca Street in a "T" as you can see in the photo, so the original Villa Capri was only a half a block or so from there. Here's an interior of it from 1960. http://hollywoodphotographs.com/photos/lrg/RN-154-4.jpg None of the two Don the Beachcomber's or Villa Capri's survive. They've all been demolished. In fact, I wonder what is on that street nowadays? Quote:

LAPD '53 has all sorts of shots of interest to the Noirisher. E.g., an interior shot (note the just-visible Buckley Mac-Gurrin murals) of the old Hall of Records, where the Board of Supervisors met, and where an irate homeowner punched a supervisor who then expired: https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7739/1...85efbbdb_c.jpg 3610 S Flower (being moved for freeway construction): https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5347/1...e9678e76_b.jpg 2700 West Temple (a story told in LAPD '53 in Ellroy's inimitable style, also to be found here as recounted by the equally impressive Larry Harnisch): https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5444/1...db264fc1_b.jpg (Interestingly, this ↑ was replaced by the 1966 LAPD Rampart Division Station.) A nice write-up in LA Magazine the other day gives the skinny on the ideas behind it, the production process, etc. |

I got my 'has shipped' notice yesterday. Looks like a Friday landing followed by a holiday week end. Perfect timing. Now if Ellroy's words don't ruin it. |

You're right, WW--of course, from the building's beginnings as Standard Ice. You really get the idea in the modern street view with the "crimp" in the image at left: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4...2520PM.bmp.jpgGSV |

The house in the background, which sits at an angle to the lot, facing the corner of Edgeware and Bellevue, is still there, as are the ones directly across Edgeware. Just up the hill and around the corner to the left are the Carroll Avenue houses. The building where the groceries are being delivered was also lost to the freeway. |

This must be the old fire station. It now faces Edgeware Road between Bellevue Avenue and Boston Street. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...eEdgeware1.jpg GSV A truncated tower still exists at the rear. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...eEdgeware2.jpg GSV The building on the southwest corner of Edgeware and Temple (1300 W Temple) is a survivor, although it's just out of frame in Tourmaline's pictures. I found a build date of 1924. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...eEdgeware3.jpg GSV Here's a 1948 aerial view which I think still shows the fire station, complete with tower, at its original location. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...eEdgeware4.jpg Historic Aerials |
