When I first saw the photograph I thought of Venice (the one in Italy ;)) -especially along the cornice http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/320...923/TMQf8q.jpg and the sword-like finials on the roof. |

I know when GW reads "New York Trash" he's going to go ballistic.

The NYT has been shameless since long before Judith Miller. Their business model works for them, so I sincerely doubt they care what we think, pro or con.

But let me shift back to LA architecture. Here's something else I wanted to say about Angeles Abbey. Now, I'm not a Shiite, or Kurdish, or Kuwaiti, but let's say I were, and had family interred at Angeles Abbey. And they're putting Saddam Hussein's picture up all over the place. http://www.iamnotastalker.com/wp-con...8721_thumb.jpg http://www.iamnotastalker.com/wp-con...8715_thumb.jpgiamnotatalker What if you went to visit Uncle Shlomo at Mount Sinai Memorial and were turned away because they were filming it as a Nazi HQ and paintings of Hitler were everywhere? Now, I get it, the Abbey needs the filming money to keep the roof from collapsing. Still, one would think the dead could rest in peace. Forgive my soapboxing. Here then are some more vintage images of Angeles Abbey— https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4574/...9790a724_c.jpg https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4568/...ee287a47_c.jpg Plus one of me, years ago, saying Merry Christmas! https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4556/...3ee61aac_o.jpg |
Thank you Beaudry. Those were lovely, especially the sepia exterior (and the one of you of course).

Well, let's just say that I know of no one in NY who gives even a tiny thought about what the LAT writes about us or what Angelenos think of New Yorkers.... Seems to be a perennial one-way worry.... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/A4...=w1325-h638-no https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MaCXa3ZSH8 |

I don't think the thing on the utility wire is a fake dinosaur, though. I suspect it's a real squirrel, running to the left, and the part that looks like a dinosaur's neck and head is the rodent's tail. I live in a place plagued by squirrels, and they do sometimes use utility lines as roads, as do their cousins the rats. They also chew the insulation on the cables, which is why I lose my DSL every other year or so and AT&T has to send a guy out to replace the cable from the pole to my house. They are cute little buggers (the squirrels, not the AT&T linemen) but obnoxious. |
I don't believe we have seen this stereo-view on NLA.
"Walnut Avenue, Los Angeles, Calif., U.S.A." http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/aTRzV6.jpg If you look closely, the swan is sitting on a metal frond base atop a stone plinth. in case you need new glasses, here it is even closer http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...922/a7i1sv.jpg super duper close-up the location is printed at lower right. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/Y50tg0.jpg1890s/ebay Do you suppose this is someone's estate? ___ Despite the name of the avenue I'm pretty sure none of the trees are Walnut. (I should know....my mom has 16 walnut trees in her yard and I've been clunked on the head countless times) |

Rupert Murdoch's Moraga winery in Bel-Air was Victor Fleming's horse ranch from 1939 until his death in '49.
This photo of Fleming was taken in 1934 with the stars of "Reckless". It wasn't taken at Fleming's ranch, which he didn't own yet, but looks suitably bucolic: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0O...E=w805-h610-no imdb IMDB quotes a charming anecdote about Fleming, "Director Henry Hathaway, a former Fleming assistant director, said of his old boss, "There was more of Fleming in [Clark Gable] than there was Gable in Gable. I think that Gable really mimicked Victor Fleming and became that kind of man on the screen". . |

The foreground trees almost look like Casuarinas, commonly called Horsetail Pines, although they're not pines at all. I'm getting out on a limb a bit, but I bet odinthor knows |

DEC. 7, 2017, 5:38 P.M. "Most residents displaced by Creek and Skirball fires will be allowed to go home Alejandra Reyes-Velarde As firefighters made progress on the Creek fire, officials announced most residents will be allowed to return to their homes as of 4 p.m. Thursday. The Riverwood, Ebey Canyon and Doane Canyon areas are open to residents only, as is the Shadow Hills area north of Sunland Boulevard, the Los Angeles Fire Department posted on Twitter. Limekiln Canyon remains closed from Pacoima Canyon Road to Maclay Street. Skirball fire evacuees — including those who live on Roscomare Road, Bel Terrace, all roads between Sunset Boulevard and Bellagio Road, and North Casiano Road from Mulholland Drive — can return home at 8 p.m. Thursday...." I've been reminded of a scene in Bright Eyes... Mrs. Smythe (née Smith) addressing her staff: "My cousin is arriving from New York tomorrow and
I want you to be sure everything is done just right.... I'm very anxious to show her we can things exactly as well out here as they do in the east...." https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NR...0=w960-h647-no We've seen clips from Bright Eyes before, with great scenes of Grand Central Airport, American Airlines Condors and DC-2s, great pepper tree–lined roads, a PE bus that figures into the scene in which Shirley's mother is flattened as she's carrying Shirley's elaborate birthday cake, a classic Decoish house in Pasadena (?), and, to top it all off, the great Jane Withers and her machine-gun imitation.
