I wish I could read the rooftop sign, on the extreme right in the construction photo above, on 5505 Wilshire, across from Desmond's. Anyone know what it was?

And another construction photo, because it makes a nice pair with the one following it.
Security First National Bank, La Brea Branch (Stiles O Clements/Morgan,Walls & Clements, 1929) 5209 Wilshire. One can see the west tower of the existing Security Bank building was demolished to build this. Shown before Rufus Keeler showed up with the black and gold glazed-terra cotta clading and before the Wilson building moved in next door to the west.

What a great post -thank you for hosting this.

I live in the UK and am a keen collector of 1930s/ 1940s US images -there are some really distinctive and outstanding photos here which have great impact.

Pershing Square looked way better with the banana trees -but then L.A. had to have that Joni Mitchell moment and that underground parking lot was a real must have. What a shame...

I looking forward to seeing more of your posts -hope that you can pull some more white rabbits out of the hat!

...at 5505. Impossible to read. I was hoping someone knew what it said. The building's still there, sans sign.

I'm still finding it very odd that Security First National demolished the west end of this building in favor of the black & gold Clements building (not that I'm complaining) as they gained little or no extra square footage. Was it just for image?

1926 Pico "Street" between 5th and 6th Avenues. Today the building still exists but the streets may have been renumbered and renamed. 3800 W Pico Blvd.??

...although the quote from the 1948 LA Times article doesn't really quite get it right. The park wasn't so much invaded by rats after dark, the rats, being nocturnal, were already there, they just woke up. They like to nest in banana trees.

And speaking of rats, Pershing Square's namesake could be a bit of one. In January 1920 a crowd of 500 welcomed Gen John J. Pershing, leader of the American Expeditionary Force in World War I to a banquet in the Hotel Alexandria's Palm Court. Speeches were given "of 100 per cent Americanism" and condemning the menaces of internationalists, isolationists, anarchists, and profiteers. Pershing noted that ignorance had caused the fall of Russia and advocated requiring every foreigner to learn to read and write or be shipped back to "the foul nest from which they came."

Does anyone have any information on this building at 544 Mateo? I used to work down the street by the 6th Street bridge and went by this place every day on the way home.

1938 - 5425 Wilshire Blvd. (Wilshire and Cochran) Before it was the "Flying Saucer" it was "The Glorified Hamburger." One could argue that there is no truth in advertising since the grill that never closes, did.
