Anyone know what it was? And another construction photo, because it makes a nice pair with the one following it. Security First National Bank, La Brea Branch (Stiles O Clements/Morgan,Walls & Clements, 1929) 5209 Wilshire. One can see the west tower of the existing Security Bank building was demolished to build this. Shown before Rufus Keeler showed up with the black and gold glazed-terra cotta clading and before the Wilson building moved in next door to the west. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a...049%2520PM.jpg waterandpower.org 1928: http://waterandpower.org/Historical_..._Brea_1928.jpg waterandpower.org https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-C...239%2520PM.jpg gsv |

Pershing Square Post June 2012
Quote:
What a great post -thank you for hosting this. I live in the UK and am a keen collector of 1930s/ 1940s US images -there are some really distinctive and outstanding photos here which have great impact. Pershing Square looked way better with the banana trees -but then L.A. had to have that Joni Mitchell moment and that underground parking lot was a real must have. What a shame... I looking forward to seeing more of your posts -hope that you can pull some more white rabbits out of the hat! All The Best alester young |

1926 Pico "Street" between 5th and 6th Avenues. Today the building still exists but the streets may have been renumbered and renamed. 3800 W Pico Blvd.??

Pershing Square Rats
Quote:
...although the quote from the 1948 LA Times article doesn't really quite get it right. The park wasn't so much invaded by rats after dark, the rats, being nocturnal, were already there, they just woke up. They like to nest in banana trees. More on the Square: http://www.kcet.org/updaily/socal_fo...e-decades.html And speaking of rats, Pershing Square's namesake could be a bit of one. In January 1920 a crowd of 500 welcomed Gen John J. Pershing, leader of the American Expeditionary Force in World War I to a banquet in the Hotel Alexandria's Palm Court. Speeches were given "of 100 per cent Americanism" and condemning the menaces of internationalists, isolationists, anarchists, and profiteers. Pershing noted that ignorance had caused the fall of Russia and advocated requiring every foreigner to learn to read and write or be shipped back to "the foul nest from which they came." quoted from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Co...exandria_Hotel) I vote for renaming and rehabbing the park (and extending it to Lindley Place so it's, duh, square). |

Does anyone have any information on this building at 544 Mateo? I used to work down the street by the 6th Street bridge and went by this place every day on the way home.

:previous: I love that building FredH. I hope we can dig up some information.

The signage and Bank may have changed, but in '47 it was the Bank of America. http://content.cdlib.org/ark:/13030/...5jj/hi-res.jpghttp://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=7638 By '78 it was the Wilshire Insurance COmpany http://jpg1.lapl.org/00090/00090420.jpgLapl 1938 - 5425 Wilshire Blvd. (Wilshire and Cochran) Before it was the "Flying Saucer" it was "The Glorified Hamburger." One could argue that there is no truth in advertising since the grill that never closes, did. http://jpg1.lapl.org/00101/00101386.jpgLAPL |
I accidentally came across this impressive arts and craft residence on the 1400 block of Colorado Boulevard at Hermosa Avenue.
http://imageshack.us/a/img14/3079/aa...0blockcolo.jpg gsv Surprisingly, a closer view reveals the residence is a club of some sort. http://imageshack.us/a/img268/3535/a...0blockofco.jpg gsv below: This is the front facade facing Hermosa Avenue with Colorado Boulevard at left. http://imageshack.us/a/img571/5639/a...0b1fronton.jpg gsw As I was about to leave..I noticed one of those 'El Camino' bells. (if you look closely, it's also visible in the photograph above) http://imageshack.us/a/img705/5862/a...0blockc2el.jpg gsv Does anyone know the history of this place? __ |
