OK, so here is a guy who thinks that when Sammy Davis Jr. lost his eye in a car accident, it was because of the suicide knob.

What must have been one of the earliest houses in Brentwood... Assuming it did get built, does anyone have any idea where it might have been, or where it might still be?

I found and bought this today in an antique store in tiny Palouse, WA. Looks to me like he's standing in front of the old central division station at 1st & Hill. What do you think? Sure would like to know the story behind how this photo made its way up here.

Unfortunately, even with a magnifying glass on the original, I can't make out more than Los Angeles. I don't know if that was the Times or the Herald. Maybe someone more familiar with the old mastheads can tell us.

There is a Parkyns St. in Brentwood. The homes are obscured by vegetation.

Not aware of any connection, other than name similarity.


McDaniel Motor Company had a Nash affiliation and was located at 819 Brand Ave. in Glendale. ('26) Location is still involved with auto sales. There appears to be a three service bay structure with a simple zigguarat-like exterior at the location. A nod towards the previous structure or happenstance?

Lots of unusual features to see with this building. In the first photo we see soot above the windows on the upper floors indicate at sometime there may have been one heck of a fire in that building, as do the broken windows on those same floors. The upper photo appears to be much later than the second one in which we see no soot about the windows. The second picture appears to have been taken in the late 1940s. One might question as to whether the building was actually occupied at the time the upper photo was taken. There has to be at least a couple of news articles on this building.

In looking at the windows specifically for the portion of the building being occupied by California Cultivator I see another interesting fact that they were a dealer for the Gibson Tractor Company, which has a very interesting and short history unto itself as a maker of lawn/garden tractors. Gibson Tractor only existed as a business between 1948 and 1952, but yet today has a significant collector following.

Motor Cop
 

Yes, that is Central Station and that is a Motor Cop of the "speed Squad in about 1913. He is in full uniform of the day by the way. I am unable to scan the photographs found in an Arcadia Publishing book titled Los Angeles Police Department by Hays and Sjoquist. A photo of the "Speed Squad" is on page 33 and a photo of the alcove of Central Station is on page 36.

The circular ceiling above the recessed balcony is especially interesting. Was this simply decorative?
