I think I prefer this hue Martin_Pal. :)
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/834/d5xr.jpg I didn't realize the rich history of the Holiday Bowl. Thanks for your research M_P. Showing some pretty serious sun-shades. (I don't really like what's going on at the entrance with those straight flimsy poles) I'm thinking they're just temporary for makeshift repairs. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/835/17bt.jpg Office of Historic Resources/http://surveyla.wordpress.com/2012/05/24/landmarks-and-survey-work-along-the-expo-line/ ...and today. I'll have to try that drink recipe this holiday weekend. ;) |
While searching for a gruesome image of a suicide knob injury (I didn't find any)
I came across this interesting steering wheel feature. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/838/7nal.jpg http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...php?tid/25106/ I can honestly say I have never seen or heard of this steering wheel feature. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...0/835/xczh.jpg http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...php?tid/25106/ __ |

I'm not sure if we've seen this exact view on NLA.

Suicide Knobs
OK, so here is a guy who thinks that when Sammy Davis Jr. lost his eye in a car accident, it was because of the suicide knob.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps925771d9.jpg http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=10717 The story sounds a little iffy. |

Just thinking of the possibilities. From website: Which States allow Steering Wheel Spinner Knobs? Popularized in the 1950s, before power steering was widespread, steering wheel spinner knobs, the "suicide knob", or "Brodie knob" allowed people to steer their car quickly and more easily. The problem with this type of spinner is it can as easily unwind as wind, making it more dangerous to use. In some cases, though, where people have handicaps, it is the only way that they can steer their cars. For the most part though, unless you are handicapped, most states have outlawed spinners. A steering wheel knob spinner is illegal in most states except in the case of handicap drivers. The laws and regulations vary by state, and even by county, so it is best to check with your local law enforcement office in regards to local laws. In the majority of cases, a person will have to get state approval before installing a steering knob. |

Hmmm. Suicide knobs...one of those things I find I'm not as interested in as I thought... I found and bought this today in an antique store in tiny Palouse, WA. Looks to me like he's standing in front of the old central division station at 1st & Hill. What do you think? Sure would like to know the story behind how this photo made its way up here.

Not aware of any connection, other than name similarity. McDaniel Motor Company had a Nash affiliation and was located at 819 Brand Ave. in Glendale. ('26) Location is still involved with auto sales. There appears to be a three service bay structure with a simple zigguarat-like exterior at the location. A nod towards the previous structure or happenstance? http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...VGGVJ9CI8N.jpghttp://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...VGGVJ9CI8N.jpg |

Pretty sure these images have been seen before on NLA, but unable to locate. 1955 (But evidently at this location since the mid-'30s) http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...7B69RE4L7Q.jpghttp://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...7B69RE4L7Q.jpg http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...PY4INA2JSY.jpghttp://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...PY4INA2JSY.jpg |

In looking at the windows specifically for the portion of the building being occupied by California Cultivator I see another interesting fact that they were a dealer for the Gibson Tractor Company, which has a very interesting and short history unto itself as a maker of lawn/garden tractors. Gibson Tractor only existed as a business between 1948 and 1952, but yet today has a significant collector following. |
