I found this photo in an old file. (the only information I have is frustratingly vague)
"Transporting Harold Lloyd's body through a service entrance, 1971." http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/yRuhg1.jpg old_file dated 2008 At first I thought it might be the back of the morgue at Temple and N. Grand. This place. http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...ostcount=33124 __ |
Bill, I hope you don't mind if I post this photograph of yours.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/Flz9MM.jpg BillinGlendaleCA at https://www.flickr.com/photos/133535...in/dateposted/ I happened upon it this afternoon, and I still haven't been able to figure out where it was taken. -not to mention that sign is making me thirsty. ;) |

I had forgotten all about the 'Glendale & Montrose Railway Company'. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/y9nV7B.jpg http://www.cvhistory.org/meetings/ol...y11meeting.htm :previous: The Glendale & Montrose electric freight locomotive, shown here on the curve of Montrose Ave. (still operating today at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California) _ |
One more post for tonight. (I promise ;))

SheriffPaul's post reminded me of this photograph in one of my old files. It's simply titled "LASD Firing Range". http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/jiOhrK.jpg Would this have been taken somewhere near the present-day Biscailuz Center, or did the Sheriffs Dept. train in Elysian Park like the Los Angeles Police Dept? __ Besides the location, I'm curious about this giant outdoor fireplace. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/q7nBWG.jpg detail I'm thinking the guy wearing the white apron and hat is getting ready to serve lunch. (is this something they did back then?) Oh, and there are some pretty nice homes in the distance. Here's a closer look (I numbered them for some reason) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/guilMB.jpg detail I'm anxious to see if all the homes are still standing. __ |
No problem, it's by the gate at the bottom of Mt. Lee Drive. I took it on the return from my last trip up to the Hollywood sign.

Harold Lloyd last rites - 11 March 1971
Quote:
That's round the back of the old, 1961, Millard Sheets Scottish Rite Masonic Temple at 4357 Wilshire (across from Wilshire United Methodist church and the Ebell Club). The 1902, John C Austin Higgins/Verbeck/Hirsch mansion on Lucerne (in the background), also seen before on NLA, was the giveaway: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Fw...Y8A=w1366-h768 gsv (from plymouth blvd) may 2016 As has already been mentioned here, the former temple opens as a museum next year. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/37...Az8=w1366-h768 google maps https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/KP...jKc=w1366-h768 la conservancy The house was moved to 637 S Lucerne in 1923 from Wilshire & Rampart to make way for the Arcady, now the Wilshire Royale (as HossC was just reminding me). The home is for sale (lots of pix at link). The owners are asking for only about half of its estimated value. I thought Lloyd was a Shriner, not a Mason (?) Thx for all the great posts e_r. Lots to look at :-) |

The Higgins-Verbeck was actually moved to Windsor Square in 1923 rather than 1924, as the Conservancy has it. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xI...024-h576-rw-no More here and here. Lloyd's funeral was held at the SR Temple on March 11, 1971. |

My stepfather had a Shriner fez....I thought is was all very strange. Masons are cultish and weirdly rely on blood lines. I prefer Ed Norton's Raccoons. Actor Glen Ford http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psmhevvfdq.jpg http://www.kosair.com/ |

LOL. I remember them! P.S. Recalling now Harold Lloyd's total devotion to his 3-D photography career. Here's Marilyn poolside at Greenacres: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/bM...e_I=w1366-h768 harold lloyd trust |
Before he built his enormous estate Greenacres, Harold Lloyd owned and lived in a house only a few blocks from where the Scottish Rites Temple now stands. The house is on the Southeast corner of 5th and Irving. Unfortunately it's been in bad shape for years and is probably the most rundown house in Windsor Square. I'm not sure who lives there but it has a definite Grey Gardens vibe.

The 1921 house last sold for $60K in 1971. Lloyd had paid $125K for it in 1923. Zillow pegs it at about $4 million now. |
Half of today's Julius Shulman post is in color. It's "Job 3897: John Kewell, Montebello Fire Department Headquarters (Montebello, Calif.), 1965".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original I like these old fire trucks. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original The black & white shots are more arty. I still haven't figured out why there's a cage around the top of the building. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original I nearly left this shot out, but then I realized how well it shows off the brickwork around the entrance. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute Now designated as Station/Engine Co 55, you'll find the building at 600 N Montebello Boulevard. Sadly, none of the GSV images show the doors open more than this. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original GSV |

https://i.imgur.com/SsR42ia.jpg From GW's Windsor Sq. blog: http://windsorsquarelosangeles.blogs...square_10.html One source states Barraclough's was featured in Architectural Digest. I suspect the source is referring to some interior residence shots from 1957 and not the restaurant, despite its advertised million dollar cost. http://hdl.huntington.org/cdm/compou...coll5/id/10187 I believe we have seen a glimpse of Barraclough's or a successor "Dublin's Food & Fun" as listed in the 1960CD or Loehmann's as listed in 1987CD) but that post is momentarily elusive. http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/YeMAAO...Yg/s-l1600.jpgebay Quote:

I think the Zody's or White Front was "Britts Department Store - 6310 West Third Street." I vaguely recall someone claiming the structure started out as a maternity ward and hoped to find out more of the structure's history. A cursory permit search for 6310 W Third St. reveals that the bulk of the structure was permitted in 1961 onward and that the property was originally owned by USC. A 1949 permit (that is not viewable on line) indicates a preexisting structure. Could it have been the maternity ward? http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...postcount=9181 |

I had this in one of my files. June 6, 1938 http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/oQ3rmw.jpg eBay "When the Tangier Temple delegation from Omaha Nebraska arrived in Los Angeles for the Shrine Convention, they were greeted by Harold Lloyd, film comedian who hails from Nebraska himself." left to right: W.H. Karnett, Potentate of the Tangier Temple knighting Harold Lloyd into the order of AK-SAR-BEN (Nebraska spelled backward), Hugh Cutler, recorder of Tangier Temple, Joseph H. Pengilly, potentate of Al-Malaikah Temple of Los Angeles, and Harold Lloyd who is chief Rabban of Al-Malaikah Temple. Here's the reverse (same as what I just typed :previous:) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/FwCXC9.jpg 6-6-38 __ |
While snooping around for that landmark Sycamore tree and D.A.R. rock near the entrance to Forest Lawn I happened upon this intriguing photograph.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...923/GjIbT1.jpg https://richardnilsen.com/tag/forest-lawn/ Two things: #1 Is that a giant Rooster Head in the basket the youthful putti is hoisting up. #2 Has Forest Lawn resorted to Astro-Turf? ____ OK, three things... Does anyone know where in the park this particular statue is located? __ |
