This is 28th St. and Manhattan Ave. in Hermosa Beach. The building with the green roof to the right appears in both photos,
and the two buildings behind the white commercial building on the corner also appear to be the same, though remodeled:

note the question (?) mark behind "Beverly Hills." In other words, the seller doesn't really know.

To me, this doesn't look like Bev. Hills.

I wonder if that white wavy retaining wall is still there amidst the shrubbery?

Two Norma Talmadge photographs currently on ebay.

I spy the three Talmadge sisters....Natalie...Norma...& Constance......and their mother.

I believe Mary Pickford's mother and sister are both present.

Rudolph Valentino is sitting next to "Mrs. Valentino" (I wonder if it's Jean Acker or Natasha Rambova?)

This second one is great but seems familiar (maybe it's been posted before on NLA)

Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first time a list of names has been added!!

ETA: Oh, here we go, it's Brentwood Canyon: http://westsidetoday.com/2014/09/19/...-lost-canyons/

"It is amazing that Brentwood Canyon survived. Although sections were filled in for Sunset, San Vicente and Montana Blvds. and the Brentwood Storm Drain project in 1960 obliterated most of the canyon that ran through the Brentwood Country Club, the canyon is still mostly intact. Had the developers come in the 1920s or later it is possible most of the canyon would have been filled in, but at the turn of the 20th Century the heavy machinery to do so wasn’t readily available and not cheap. Plus, the canyon added a rustic charm that helped put the “park” in Brentwood Park. Although Brentwood Canyon ends just north of Wilshire, it once extended further to roughly Santa Monica Blvd. and Berkeley Street. The dip in Arizona between Centinela Avenue and Franklin Street in Santa Monica, for example, is part of Brentwood Canyon."

She bought her own home just north of the country club.)

...which would make the structure on the east side of Olive up from the Center Garage the Wales Apartments at 344 S. Olive, built in 1896 as the Bailey Building and demolished in 1963. The structure on the sec is still a garage, albeit without the "shady roof parking" and the 60 cent/day parking rates.

That garage on the right side is the one where Eddie Murphy comes out in the movie "48 Hours" driving a Porsche.

Congratulations to us.

I am very pleased to be a part of this group. I only have contributed a little but you have given to me SO MUCH. My understanding of LA history has grown exponentially over the last 4 years or so. Thank YOU ALL for YOUR Contributions!!!
To celebrate 1000 pages, I invited any of you to a meeting in DTLA and one person took me up on it. Hoping to come DTLA again soon. Don't have a date but if anyone is interested in a meetup, send me a message. My email should be part of my profile.

Just wondering, when these mystery locations are identified, like this one or the Santa Monica Beach houses photo, which were determined to be in Hermosa Beach, does anyone go back to the eBay post and offer the seller this information?

That is a lovely colorful photo. I like looking at all the people sitting in the background, too. Something has caught the attention of those on the left side.

Heh..."pretty girls beauty pageant." Makes me wonder if there's other kinds!

Since I'm posting a few comments today, I also want to say that many of you offer an amusing quip in your posts that often make me laugh or smile, and I thought it worth pointing out that I appreciate it when you guys do that, though I'm guessing if I kept posting that sentiment after each one it would become annoying! FYI!

The Decades channel has been airing Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In since December! I wish I could find the clip, or the episode,
but one of the 1969 shows has the tricyclist at the base of Angel's Flight while one of the cars is descending.

741 S Bristol appears to be in Los Angeles, just over the line from Santa Monica. The street name changes from Bristol to Franklin at the border:

I (gently) corrected a guy on eBay once who was selling a photo of Court Flight as Angels Flight. He did't appreciate it at all.

I have sent many identifications and corrections to USC, and they're very much appreciated. I tried correcting another digital library once (I can't remember which, but it wasn't one of our usual suspects), and got a reply saying they'd pass the information on to the relevant person, but the description still hadn't changed several months later. I've never even thought about correcting eBay sellers.

Today's Julius Shulman subject isn't new to NLA, but I thought it was worth posting the other four color photos from the set. It's "Job 2202: Mobil Station (Anaheim, Calif.), 1956". Does anyone recognize the car on the far right?

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original

The colors vary a bit between shots. Unusually (for me!), I haven't changed them.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original

Competition wasn't far away - I spy a 76 sign on the far right.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original

The last images shows spare tires and lubrication, although that looks like an air hose in the man's hands.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original

All from Getty Research Institute

The gas station was also featured in post #24729 by e_r, which includes an aerial showing its proximity to Disneyland. I followed-up in post #24738 with a comparative aerial view showing how fleeting the gas station's existence was.

At the time of my original post (August 2013), I commented that "The most recent GSV image shows an empty lot with a "Walgreens Coming Soon" sign." I can't see a Walgreens sign yet, but as of June 2016, this 5-story building was nearing completion on the site.
