This was filmed across the street from the 1930 Zigzag building at the swc of Beverly Boulevard and Fuller Avenue (just west of El Coyote)--
the International Fluorescent Co was at 7358 Beverly. Until recently details of the façade were enhanced with gray paint.

Flames broke out in the basement of the Los Angeles Pacific building at 314 W. Fourth St., adjoining the Broadway Department Store, at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon and threatened serious loss. The fire is believed to have had its origin in the rear of the basement, under the Sunset Bakery, at 320 W. 4th Street.

Fourth Street from Broadway to Hill was speedily roped off to keep the crowds back, and Broadway became a mass of humanity within a few minutes. Great volumes of smoke could be seen rolling up over the Broadway Department Store, creating the impression that it was that great store which was burning.

So quickly did the flames spread in the lower portions of the Los Angeles Pacific Building that the clerks and stenographers of the railway company in the offices on the second floor could not reach safety by the stairway or elevator. Fifteen girls and women were taken from the windows of the second floor with ladders. The clouds of smoke that rolled from the building did not begin to compare in size with the cloud of spectators which sought to reach the scene of the fire.

Is it too much to ask for flappers to reappear? It is the '20s after all. After this miserable pandemic we deserve flappers.

As I recall we've seen this pic before and one of the ladies is Sally Rand.

An image search and a text search didn't find any previous occurrences for me, but the picture below, which e_r posted last December, is not dissimilar. It include Sally Rand amongst the Wampus Baby Stars of 1927 posing with Babe Ruth.

Well, a Ruthian pitcher/slugger has appeared among us with the name of Ohtani, so maybe flappers will magically reappear as well. It is the '20s again. :yes: Of course as Twain supposedly said, history rhymes but doesn't repeat, and Ohtani is slimmer and more well behaved than the Babe...so far.

Thanks Martin. Debbie Reynolds at her best doing the Charleston. That R & M show was closer to the 1920s in time than it was to today. Probably filmed over 50 years ago, but even then the 1920s had an allure. Even farther back, in 1952's "Singing in the Rain" about the dawn of "talkies" (also with a young Debbie) the 1920s had an allure. Great film, everyone should see it. The 1920s were far from perfect (racism, gangsterism, corruption, etc.) but people did apparently have a good time. They were ready to party after the horrors of WWI and the "Spanish" Flu pandemic, and a wild party it was. "The Era of Wonderful Nonsense". But under the surface fascism was spreading and the seeds of the Great Depression were taking root. But most people didn't notice as the party roared on and the economy and Wall Street boomed.

I used to go the the Mesa Theatre at 58th and Crenshaw. A lovely movie house, long gone.

Here's another mystery location.

This photograph, dated April 1896, appeared on eBay a few days ago.

It shows a group of men posing in front of the Los Angeles Mining Stock Exchange. Curiously, there are furnished rooms to rent in the same building.

The picture of the girls and the policeman outside the Hollywood station (re)posted by Snix was posted three years ago by GW here.

My mother was 12 and living on the West Side when the earthquake hit. My grandparents were separated at the time and she wrote her father in Chicago about all the damage she saw there and in DTLA. Its quite a remarkable document and I preserved it. If I can find it in storage, I'll scan an image and post it.

The Los Angeles Mining & Stock Exchange was listed at 318 W 2nd St in the 1896 CD...it looks like a Mrs. I E Robinson, and then others, rented furnished rooms at the same address during the late '90s.


The officers of the LAM&SE listed in the '96 CD were A H Judson pres, J A Fairchild vp, HM Russell treas, FJ Cooper secy--but Judson was apparently succeeded as prexy by G. W. Parsons, whose initials seem to be the ones on the back of the photo. The third man from the left appears to me to be Major Horace M. Russell, a romantic figure of the West and a big LA muckety-muck. He was a charter member of both the California and Jonathan clubs and lived in big West Adams houses including 24 St James Park and 718 West Adams. His colorful bio is here.
