Sprouts did open today, tried to pick up a sandwich on the way to the office but I, and a few others, circled the parking lot for 5 minutes and gave up after not finding a spot. I fear that's going to be an ongoing issue there.

I worked in the Financial Center for 20 years. Always loved the rotundas. The basement space is very cool, it connects both rotundas and back to the main building. You can follow it all the way through to the parking garage on the west side of the property.

Fast-growing restaurant group moves HQ to iconic Midtown Phoenix building

Good news for the Financial Center.

The company, known for giving life to older spaces with unique architectural designs, will relocate its headquarters to the W.A. Sarmiento-designed Phoenix Financial Center rotunda at 3443 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix. The space was designed by the modernist architect in 1964.

The office space already has been secured, and the company will start a renovation project this fall. Upward Projects expects to move its 30-person team into the new headquarters in February 2019.

“Starting with the first-ever Postino inside the former Arcadia post office, Upward Projects is built on a foundation of revitalizing historic and architecturally significant spaces,” said Lauren Bailey, Upward Projects’ co-founder and CEO, in a statement. “So the Phoenix Financial Center is the perfect retro-modern home for our team to work in a creative, inspiring environment.”

Bailey said she told Joe Herzog of Shepley Bulfinch, the firm that recently restored the south building of the Phoenix Financial Center, that she loved the space and he informed her the rotunda would be available in the fall.

Upward Projects will move its headquarters from one former bank space to another. Currently it’s HQ is in the former Al Beadle-designed bank that also houses Federal Pizza.

The 8,700-square-foot Financial Center Pavilion will be where Upward Projects will develop and manage all aspects of its business, including eight Postino WineCafé locations across Arizona, Colorado and Texas, two locations of Joyride Taco House, Windsor & Churn and Federal Pizza.

The company expects to grow its home office headcount to 50 in the next few years, according to a company statementease. Last year Upward Projects received financial backing from a Los Angeles private equity firm to take its Postino concept national.

Upward Projects will use some of the midcentury elements already in the two-story space including the floating staircase with surfboard-shared steps, oversized hanging globe lighting and warm orange walls. It also has floor-to-ceiling glass window walls supported by upside-down arches.

Its new space also has a large underground basement, something unusual in the Valley.

“We’re not sure what exactly we’ll do with the basement,” Bailey said. “The possibilities are endless. But we did run a poll on Instagram and the top vote getter was to install a roller rink."

Couple of tidbits:

1. The Link crane is set to get raised next weekend. Actually talked to a knowledgable individual onsite and he explained the whole process. So I'm going with that.

2. AC Hotel at Arizona Center is about to go. Surveyors and markers were onsite today and the whole site has been marked off. Spoke to them and they said they are marking the site for construction. Also, a variance for a 48' setback sign is posted with a meeting date of September 6th.

3. Same guys I spoke with at AZ Center also mentioned that they will be marking off the residential site soon. They seemed to have some knowledge of the project and said it was still in the design process. So, this should be great news.

...also to add to this (I got caught in the onslaught of rain while walking), there was apparently a zoning hearing today regarding a 0' setback for Kenect. I haven't checked on the results yet. So we have movement with Kenect as well.

Media Day for The Churchill occurred last night and soft opening today and tomorrow. Saw some pics on social media and it looks great inside! Grand opening next weekend along w/ State 48 Brewery on 9/1. Paz Cantina should follow closely after that...

The Blocks of Roosevelt Row

Speaking of Roosevelt Row, does anyone have any updates on the remaining portion/phase of The Blocks? Last time I went to Tacos Chelo, some work, albeit slow, was being performed.

I heard from somewhere there was an issue with one of the home’s foundation and the house would be removed. But that was hearsay, I could be wrong. I’ve been eyeing it every time I pass by, I must say I’m disappointed with the sluggishness of the project as it will really breathe some new life back into 5th St once completed as Taco Chelo and the lot have.

Driving by the other day noticed it was painted seems like the window treatments and other details were in or going in.

West downtown emerges as new residential development hot spot

Nothing new here except for a little nugget of new info regarding HB Monroe Tower...

Straight on from Central. It's a massive structure and will look impressive upon completion. I think it's a nice addition to the skyline.

Once completed with so many new people, it will be interesting to see how businesses change and get added to the area to support and serve the increased population.
