1940s Photo Album Pacifc Palisades, Santa Monica WWII
#1 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/HoT4mz.jpg EBAY (no longer listed) This might show the top of the stairs that used to go down to Roosevelt Highway. What ya'll think? #2 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/oa5Pc3.jpg Is that a sandbar in the distance, or am I seeing things? I thought the dark structure in the center of the photograph was some sort of defensive installation. but on closer inspection I see that there's writing on a three-sided banner. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...921/WeSxsf.jpg Now I'm thinking 'SNACK BAR' #3 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/jEdHma.jpg There's that 'sandbar' again. (hmmm..are those fake boats?) Were sandbars installed along the west coast as defensive measures during WWII? I believe the small writing on the right says BATH House (I'm certain about BATH, but not sure of the second) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/JXGaYA.png DETAIL #4 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/moj5Ug.jpg The large tudor-esque home is either L.B. Mayer's home or Irving Thalburg & Norma Shearer's home. (I mix them up all the time) #5 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/922/TMxRnQ.jpg I wonder if the photographer(s) stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel? :photographer:snap! #6 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/nLvrc8.jpg Here we have three military men posing at Sunset and Vine. Last, but not least.....a mystery highway. #7 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/PgngT4.jpg I have no idea where this might be. -on the far right you can see a water tower. and it appears the convoy just drove under a R.R. bridge. THE END __ All are from this https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/0WWRRt.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/x19Rb0.jpg I didn't see one photograph from Beverly Hills |

Ernesto's showed up in an episode of the The Rockford Files' in 1978. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/kj8gkw.jpg episode: DWARF IN A HELIUM HAY [1978] |

Photo looks inbound (compass WNW) on the Arroyo Seco Parkway from Ave. 64. The railroad bridge then carried the ATSF mainline from Union Station into South Pasadena and points east. In somewhat reconstructed form, it's now the Metro Gold Line to Azusa. Definitely not Beverly Hills, e-r! |

:previous: You're right Tikiman! Ernesto's storefront looks so different I didn't realize it was part of the theater.
After completing this post. I've decided I'm......WRONG. *sad* Ernesto's Pizzaeria was located in the part of the theater that forms the left side of the Egyptian courtyard. (it had slipped my mind) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/luC2xB.jpg google earth hmmm...or was Ernesto's the storefront to the left of the arrow? Let's look at this photo from the Rockford Files more time. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/kj8gkw.jpg ROCKFORD FILES In this 1966 pic you can see space between the buildings. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/UPowfN.png So maybe that isn't the Ernesto's sign  This post is a mess. Can you tell I haven't had my coffee? I'll be right back. https://imageshack.com/a/img922/4359/srLfH9.gif giphy |
*wipes coffee from mouth*
Here's an amazing photoograph of a very young Mary Astor posing in a field of dahlias. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/921/tcrxbA.jpg old file / date unknown I wonder if the publicity department found this field near Hollywood or someplace in the San Fernendo Valley? (I sure do wonder alot ;)) Oh, and young Mary looks just like a 2nd cousin of mine. p.s. I checked with odinthor to make sure the flowers were dahlias. |
Heh, E_R, I was just quoting your post above that you altered as I was quoting it and the photo I was going to mention something about has disappeared!

Here's another photo of WWII servicemen at NBC I saw not too long ago... https://farm5.static.flickr.com/4524...ae4c775d_b.jpgFlickr I also came across some pages of a WWII photo album recently, although it's inaccurately titled as WWI at the source. Johnny & Wesley's Leave in Hollywood... Here are 4 of the album pages: "A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA" "Mrs. Darrell (sic) Zanuck, movie producer's wife, invited the boys to her home. (I wonder how you got an invitation?) In these photos are Johnny & Wesley with Mrs. Zanuck at their home which was located at 546 Palisades Beach Road Santa Monica, CA (90402). Per the caption, Darryl Zanuck was in London at the time. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4189/3...6bdd6666_b.jpg In these photos, Johnny and Wesley are with Norma Shearer. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4173/3...59081b37_b.jpg These three photos show Wesley at the Chinese Theatre (talking!), with a tank and a group waiting for a train at Union Station. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4175/3...bee47e37_b.jpg (Another photo in the album shows the film playing at the Chinese Theatre at the time to be the Abbott & Costello movie Rio Rita, released in April of 1942.) This last group has the boys at the Zanuck's with some "girls who work as movie extras", Earl Carroll's nightclub and we end up back at NBC Radio City where we started. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4188/3...90130783_b.jpg The 4 photo album pages (12 photos) I didn't picture are of the two boys in various areas in and around the Zanuck's house and two of the Chinese Theatre forecourt. Link HERE. |

His bored, lonely wife invites a squad of Marines to their Santa Monica home for a pool party. Interesting. |

LOL! "Uh, Mrs. Zanuck, your husband's on the phone..." :runaway: |
The beach photo with boats looks like the area just north of the Santa Monica pier. A lot of those houses have been replaced with modern ones but in the background, there was a breakwater/pier where small boats docked. You can still see the remnants at low tide.
