How on earth did you figure this out, Noir_Noir??

It was fiendishly complex. I figured the apartment building looked newish in the picture.

Was it unusual to have bars on the windows of apartment buildings like this in 1929? (It still does.)

No. Wrought iron has been with us for a long time. One source attributes this to a Spanish Colonial revival style. Unclear whether iron window, door and fence adornment was supposed to be for security, decoration or both. Bars, can be obviously be decorative and may indicate something worth protecting as well as providing some theft deterrence.

Quote:

It's tough to pin down when and how burglar bars spread so deeply into certain parts of Greater L.A. They're common in Latin America and much of the Southwest. Ironwork grilles found in L.A.'s swankier neighborhoods often reflect a Spanish Colonial Revival style that grew popular in the 1920s and '30s, after the 1914 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego.

And during the high-crime 1970s and '80s, door-to-door salespeople canvassed neighborhoods, scaring the hell out of people with harrowing crime stories.

Then people started dying. Window bars trapped them inside during house fires. County law says all bars have to be built with an indoor release, but because of lax enforcement and penny-pinching landlords, many of these iron cages don't have the required latch. Gracian says ELACC's renovators regularly find permanently fastened bars when they first enter units on the Eastside. http://www.laweekly.com/news/is-it-t...w-bars-5692018

Let's take a closer look at that sign.

I'm pretty sure the name at the top is Blaney's
and as you can see, the bowling alley has 10 'courts'. (not sure when they started calling them lanes)

Ten pin bowling uses the size balls and pins that we are used to today. Duckpin uses smaller, slightly wider pins and smaller balls with no finger holes. The balls are somewhat bigger than a softball. There are some rule differences. There are only a few duckpin alleys left in the country.

The ad about the bowling lanes (courts) also mentions "nine pins" bowling, which I have heard of, and "cocked hat" bowling which I have not!

Cocked Hat
Cocked hat; a bowling game played on a standard tenpin lane with three tenpins and a duckpin ball (4–5 inches in diameter). The pins are set 36 inches apart at the three corners of a normal tenpin formation. Two balls are allowed per frame, and scoring is as in tenpin bowling, except that 3 instead of 10 plus the total felled with the next two balls is the maximum score per frame. Thus, a perfect game is 90 instead of 300.

In looking for some other pictures of this band, I found a wonderful map of LA in 1909. One of those aerial sort of drawn maps with labels on the buildings. Unlike most it will zoom in a lot and is very clear. it is located at http://www.gastorical.com/los-angeles-1909

That's the "Birdseye View Publishing Co." 1909 map. It's also available at www.bigmapblog.com, but if you want to download the original, go to the Library of Congress. Various versions are available, with the best quality being a 634.2Mb TIFF which comes in at 17711 x 12515 pixels!

Cute little business but that bush seems to be right in the way.

If you look closely at the street sign..you will see that it says E. Fifth Avenue. (but the cross street is a mystery)

Here's a closer look at the two people inside. (I lightened it a bit)

I thought they'd be two employees, but the man is wearing a sailor suit.

:previous: Can you tell what kind of bush that is odinthor? I like its small attractive flowers.

...oh, and what about that trellis at the window on the left in the top photo. (it is a trellis, right?)

Have you ever seen one that straddles a window like that?
