Abner Ross had his real estate office on the second floor of this heavily remodeled building on the northwest corner of Broadway and 4th St.

The beautiful Pico-Union Branch Library is on this block. (next door to the missing Ross residence)

"Orchestra Music Every Evening".
To think, one might be able to make a living as a musician if presenting live music was the aspiration of even mid-level hotels. I am amazed looking at old brochures of Hollywood restaurants and night spots that offered "dancing nightly". That meant working musicians.
Not bitter, but hard to reconcile with today's environment.

And speaking of working, I rehearsed in this building last weekend, new to me and I think to NLA- built by the Hollywood Stake, Latter Day Saints. Architects: Pope (Hyrum) & Burton (Harold W.). Corner of Manhattan Pl. and Country Club Dr.

Doesn't look much different now. The palm trees are a lot taller!

I believe the building we see in the distance with SSLYN on the side was originally the Lexington
(above and to the left of the wagon driver's head; to the right of his shoulder is the turret of the
Menlo Hotel on the NE corner of Main and Winston).


HossC has more here, which shows that the Lexington was still the Lexington (and not the Rosslyn) in 1905.

The BP for the Kerckhoff Bldg. (558-62 S. Main) that GW noted is dated July 25, 1907. So, e_r, my guess
is that your photo is either from 1906 or c. May-July 1907. How many parades did LA have in the spring
and early summer of 1907?

So it seems that the Lindsay became the Rosslyn...then the Hart brothers entered the picture, combining the Rosslyn and the Lexington in mid-1906--this is what I found when writing about George Hart's house house at 107 Fremont Place:


"In July 1903, [the Harts] added the original Hotel Rosslyn on Main Street to their holdings. Three years later, they bought the adjacent Hotel Lexington to expand the Rosslyn. Their big move came when they bought the prominent corner just to the south, most recently the site of one of William H. Clune's theaters. Here the Harts built the New Hotel Rosslyn, designed by John Parkinson and opened on November 9, 1914, George's 44th birthday. A proposed northward expansion three years later to replace the old Lexington structure and the original Rosslyn was delayed and then changed in 1922 to instead jump across the street when the Harts leased the southwest corner of Fifth and Main. The New Rosslyn Annex would be connected to the main hotel by passageways under Fifth Street, including one lined with marble for hotel guests. The Harts again called on Parkinson, now partnered with his son Donald, to duplicate the details of the 1914 building. When the New Rosslyn Annex opened on December 29, 1923, it took the title of largest hotel on the Pacific Coast...."

Thanks for sharing your wonderful memories BDiH....sounds like you had a lot of fun times there.

My Father was quite the roller skater in his youth before he met my Mom. On Sunday drives he'd point out where all the rinks used to be.
My Mom didn't appreciate his roller stories very much. She assumed he used his roller skating skills to pick up girls. (she assumed correctly ;))


I realize now that we discussed this before. (thanks for the reminder Martin Pal)

The Hollywood Roller Bowl was located in an old Warner Bros. sound stage (no doubt Stage 2...like it said in the ad)

Well I just found a photograph showing the statue in the lobby, so it wasn't a prop after all. (although it's closer to the stairs than it was in the film)
