We have seen the Munster's car on Hollywood Boulevard but I don't believe we have seen this particular slide.

I thought it might be parked in front of The Haunted House but this place appears to be strictly a restaurant.

They're outside Aldo's at 6413 Hollywood Boulevard, seen here in 1966. Various sources I found say it's where Sonny met Cher.

According to an April 2020 article at beverlypress.com:
As part of its consent calendar on March 31, the Beverly Hills City Council unanimously approved what is expected to be the final allocation of funds for plugging 19 oil wells on the Beverly Hills High School campus.

To date, 16 wells have been capped and are now abandoned, and work continues on the 17th well. The city hopes to finish the entire project by October, according to Beverly Hills Director of Public Works Shana Epstein.
My quick search didn't find any articles saying whether or not they did complete the plugging works this year.

"It's New Year's Eve and hopes are high
Dance one year in, kiss one good-bye..."

Happy New Year
Noirishers!

https://www.langtra.com/wp-content/u...bservatory.jpg

Sound the brass, roll the drum.
To the world of tomorrow we come.
See the sun through the grey.
It's the dawn of a new day.
Here we come young and old;
Come to watch all the wonders unfold
And the tune that we play.
It's the dawn of a new day
Tell the world
At the door
That we don't want him 'round any more.
Better times
Here to stay
As we live and laugh the American way.
Listen one, listen all.
There can be no resisting the call.
Come hail the dawn of a new day!

I got curious about the Matt Talbot Canteen--here's an item from the Times of Feb 12, 1955:

And here is a much longer story about skid row from the Times, June 15, 1953:

And to get anal about cars...that would be a '55 T'bird rather than a '56--no continental kit, which would have obscured the hood crest on the '55 Chevy...which is a Two-Ten rather than a Bel-Air....

Happy New Year everyone!

Hollywood New Year's party, 1952....(venue unknown)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/qpSMHW.jpg
livejournal

That's the Tarzan of that day, Lex Barker, with his wife, actress Arlene Dahl. But they were soon-to-be the ex-Mr. & Mrs. Barker.

I couldn't help but notice Dahl's, and the other lady's, masks.:previous: They made me think of a movie I saw as a little kid, Queen of Outer Space (1958), that has haunted my imagination ever since.

The film starred Zsa Zsa Gabor & featured Amazon-like women who carried spears and wore elaborate (sexy?) masks similar to the masks worn at the 1952 New Year's Eve party.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Oueen of Outer Space
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/X71G2X.jpg
lissatownsend

Then it occured to me that perhaps the masks were made by the same Hollywood designer.

. . .which led me to Jorgett Strumme (I'll return to her later)...Irene Cane (nope, not her either). . .umm. . .

This is going to need a lot more research.

I'd also recommend a similar site called PastVu. It's Russian-based, so defaults to Moscow and their equivalent service for google maps, but you can make adjustments so it's easier to use. They accept photos up to the year 2000, so not all are really that old, but most pics seem to be from pre-1970s.

One caveat, as the individual users upload the photos, sometimes the locations and info given has been wrong, I've noticed in a few. But it's still good for a spin around any areas you're interested in.

mystery fountain or water main break?

FYI:..We have seen Welch's previously on NLA.

I recently happened upon this original slide on eBay & I can't figure out what the heck is going on in the foreground.

Is it some sort of fountain or a water main break?...Whatever it is it appears that some prankster emptied a box of LUX detergent into it!

As a reminder: Here's a photograph that HossC posted back in the earlier days of the thread. Welch's was located at 4401 Atlantic Blvd. in Long Beach.

Does anyone know what was across the street from the restaurant? (site of the mystery 'fountain' thingy)

To see Welch's unique interior go Here.

But first, help me out with this 'fountain' mystery. :superwhip

Sadly, there's a Starbucks that takes up the entire space of the former traffic island.

I took a ride down to the former site of Welch's and was surprised to see that the Starbucks incorporated a fountain into their design scheme. (I've never seen this before)

My guess is. . .the city sold the triangular parcel of land to a developer with the stipulated that a fountain be included in the project to make up for the loss of the old fountai.

If true. .it's a sorry replacement, of what appears to have been, (judging from odinthor's aerial) a rather large circular civic fountain....

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/GBl0gf.jpg

I think it's a reprehensible loss. . . f*ck starbucks!

My kingdom :pimpdaddy: for a street level photograph of the LOST fountain.
