Do you remember the photograph of Sigourney Weaver enjoying a hotdog at Tail O' the Pup in 1978?

Here she is, fourteen years earlier, at the iconic Beatles concert at the Hollywood Bowl (1964).

Just amazing!

She was only 15 years old.

Speaking of Sigourney...

Her grandfather built 87 Fremont Place in 1923. Here's a history of the house and her interesting family:

I think I remember it too but instead of 'FOOD' the oversized letters spelled 'ZUMA'. (but that might have been a different building)

I forgot about Sigourney's Uncle Doodles. Thanks for the reminder, GW.

While 'Imagine' is the title cut of the album, for my money the best song is 'Gimme Some Truth'. It should have been give Lennon/McCartney song writing credit since there's film of Paul helping John with the lyrics in January 1969. But in 1971, Lennon wasn't about give McCartney credit for anything.

Yes, I think you're right about ZUMA!

I've never seen it spelled as Mohave, but that piece was from Nevada, maybe they spell stuff different.

We also have a Red Rock Canyon here in California(north of Mojave), a great location for landscape astrophotographer refugees from LA's light pollution.

This was on Fine Art America:

Zuma Beach Food Stand and Lifeguard Tower is a photograph by Richard Cheski which was uploaded on April 28th, 2014.

The FOOD sign is somewhat different looking, but there's a lifeguard tower and a circle, center bottom, where that palm tree was located.

I also agree that both were/are amazingly talented musicians but I always laugh when I think of John calling some of Paul's not so hard core rock songs "Granny Music".

Is the food stand abandoned? Looks pretty weedy. Maybe just open in the summer. Zuma never seemed to be as crowded as the beaches closer to the city. It did take a fairly long drive to get there, except from the west Valley where you can take Topanga or Malibu Canyon. Will Rogers State Beach near Chautaqua was my parents usual choice on hot summer days in the Valley. I always preferred the beach near POP, since there was so much to do. POP (Pacific Ocean Park) was somewhat tacky but had a lot of fun stuff for a kid. It would be interesting to see some old POP pics. The day Marilyn Monroe died we were at POP. Nobody could believe it. Took the fun out of the day. We left early. The place emptied out.

Isn't Adohr spelled backwards Rhoda? I do remember the Adohr brand of dairy as a kid. Haven't seen it for decades. Same thing with Barbara Ann bread that somebody mentioned. Used to be common. No more. Weber's bread used to be common, but don't see it much anymore. My grandfather designed the Weber's logo. Brands come and go but Coca Cola will last forever. Ty Cobb got rich buying Coca Cola stock, not from his baseball salary.

It looks like there's two of these buildings. The one above is labeled "Zuma Cafe" on Google Maps (see here). The one below is about half a mile south as the PCH turns inland (see here). It still has its palm tree and an opening at the front. Both now have small "FOOD" signs, which replaced the larger text (inset) between 2016 and 2017.

RE:...Zuma Beach.

Does anyone know if this 1959 development was ever built?

pepperdine archive

I checked this recent aerial and it's difficult to tell.

The billboard says "Unit #2 Now Selling". . .so at least two units were built.

.

badrunner Oct 22, 2020 6:32 PM

There's a Horizon Dr in Malibu. I'm not sure if it's the same development.

ethereal_reality Oct 22, 2020 6:49 PM

Thanks, badrunner. I'll have to check it out.

:previous:

According to remax.com, the Horizon Hills neighborhood is centered around Horizon Drive (as mentioned by badrunner). I've marked Remax's perimeter on the aerial below.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds
Google Maps

It's a private road, but until a few years ago you could've seen this sign at the entrance. It looks like there was a fire there at some point since 2015, because the latest GSV image shows a crude, handmade sign just saying "Horizon".

A closer look at the Horizon Hills billboard. ....Did anyone wonder what the small sign was all about?

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/MahK5Q.jpg

Here's your answer:

The small "Vote No on 29" sign refers to "A September 1959 election to expand water service to Malibu
through the establishment of Los Angeles County Waterworks District 29 for Malibu and Topanga."
....pepperdine

The motion would pass.

odinthor just sent me this panorama showing the view from Horizon Hills.

The view is much better than I imagined.

Paul certainly had "granny music" in his arsenal. That's the beauty of his work. He can master all styles, IMO. I love both guys. The best.

A job worse than an elevator operator?

I don't believe we have seen the "Dippsy-Doodle" amusement ride on nla.

This is a great photograph. I like the people milling about in the forground. . .the man eating caramel corn. . .the baby looking at the photographer.

One thing, in particular, caught my eye. . .if you look closely, the ride operator is on the ride! (he's in the middle of the orb)

He must be manipulating some sort of a spinning mechanism.

I imagine when he goes home at night it feels like his bedroom is spinning! :eeekk:

Horrendous fires there two years ago in November, 2018. Some photos of animals being rushed to the beach near that "Food Stand" and Lifeguard tower:

The fires jumped PCH onto the beach.

Terrible fires...I believe this fire was called the Woolsey Fire and encompassed a huge area right down to the ocean as you can see by this huge MAP:
