Finally stopped by the Essesx project today after a client meeting. This is going to look great once trees start popping buds.

I love it.

Slick. it’s so strange to see density behind the monument from the famous DNC riot.

Looks like they’re only 4 floors above the first column setback, which means about 24 floors remaining. Still a lot of building left to go!
|
Yes, this is a photo of a tv, but Essex is about to block Sears in one of the traditional skyline shots.

That Ebony Jet building needs an update really bad... it's hideous, I'm sorry!
|
Im not a fan of it either but I think its landmarked in some way, but I could be wrong. Careful, I think the brutalism fans like this one. I dont know if thats the right terminology but I think that one is in the same ballpark as 55 wacker? I'm probably wrong but I enjoy learning more each time I read here. Hilton has got to build a tower behind it. Pretty please?
|
Yeah it’s brutalism, and even if you don’t like it it’s worth preserving bc it throws this new glass tower into stark relief. And even on its own, it’s a handsome little design.
|
It's modernist for sure, but I don't see how it's brutalist. I thought it was covered in stone paneling, not exposed concrete.

The view of both Parks (One Grant and Essex on the) from a little farther north:

The green tint is much needed down there
|
^ Ahhhh yeah, I'm no expert on brutalism so I could totally be wrong. I had just been under the impression that exposed concrete was the default material usage. If anyone knows exactly I'd love to know so I don't sound like a moron in the future. I'm not trusting wikipedia with this

The Chazen Museum and Humanities Building by Harry Weese in Madison Wisconsin are mainline Brutalism and clad mostly in stone and metal:

BSB is literally only building on the UIC East Campus that I would fight tooth and nail from being demo'd (...well, maybe UH and SEL). I absolutely loved it, both as a student and non student. The crazy stairways, the weird hallways, and the massive, cavernous lecture halls. BSB 250 was my favorite. You could get away with having a full volume conversation near the top rows and the professor wouldn't hear you.
Ahh, memories ;) |
Essex turning out to be quite the gem.

^ Gorgeous shots of a gorgeous building. Thanks!

Yeah this one's a real treat. It's the perfect spot for some green.

This could be added to multiple threads, but Essex sticks out for me

Beautiful. Thanks spyguy. If the columbian was doubled in height I think i might not complain as much about the south lacking height. But from this view I would love for a tower around halsted/roosevelt at uic softball diomend. Not going to happen, but if this recent greek town boom can travel farther south, development would make that photo look so extraordinary. And I know, its all uic property but that area could use a boost instead of the overpriced dorms i was living in at maxwell and Halsted.

I always considered this one a quiet beauty, and one of my favorites in this cycle.

Eh, short sh*t towers are less noticeable :)
That said, I don't think the Columbian is too bad, considering. I remember back in '05 most posters commending it for using actual brick for the exterior. I forgot if they stuck with that, or ended up VE-ing that idea and switching to a veneer. The brick color is nice as well, and differentiates it from the usual red brick we ended up seeing a lot of in the 00's. I wouldn't mind if it was 100-150 ft taller, but doubling its height might be a bit too much. |
The 18th street bridge over the river makes for a pretty cool vantage point for this tower and the other projects on the western side of the South Loop. I've never really figured out how to post pictures to this thing but if anyone else is on a picture expedition, that would be a great spot.

Took this today. . . been a while since I uploaded any building photos so figured I'd try and contribute more to the discussion. . . . . . |

^ Nice shots and thanks for the contribution.
Green is the perfect color for that location. This building is turning into an unexpected stunner. |
Bvic that overhead shot is awesome. Shows how much those fins will draw eyes in. Any word if the fins will be lit up in anyway. It would look cool with the legacy crown in the background, corresponding vertical lighting. But that lighting would just piss off too many tenants im sure.

the color is dope

Only thing i learned from these pics is that DIVY bikes are in demand!
Dat grren tho! :happy |
