This one is becoming very visible from street level at different areas in the south loop. A welcome addition

Bombardier Apr 8, 2018 12:39 PM

It's a beautiful day for a crane jump. They are adding 8 sections to the crane today, you can watch from the Field Museum Earthcam. They will add the sections at a pace of around 1 per hour. If any of you photographers are in the area, might be worth stopping by!

Is the "McCormick Place Busway" that runs alongside the tracks actually used much?

Converting that busway and the barren land between the busway and the tracks into part of Grant Park would markedly diminish the eyesore impact of the railway area.

Its not exactly all that much cheaper to just convert the bus way to park and leave the tracks exposed. It will still be a huge multi million dollar job, and if you are trying to get that much cash committed, might as well pitch the plan for covering the entire gaping scar.

And to answer your question, the bus way isn't used all that frequently, but it is used enough by people of means and clout that it won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

left of center Apr 9, 2018 1:23 AM

It really towers (hah, pun) over Essex now. Will this be the final crane jump for this project?

Bombardier Apr 9, 2018 1:31 AM

^No, there will be one more jump. The top of the crane right now is roughly the top of the building. Five more sections need to be added to the crane in the final jump.

Is 607 ft still the official height for this? I thought I remember BVictor saying this was probably going to be around 620 ft.

The new Columbia student center

gebs Apr 20, 2018 1:35 PM

There are at least twelve recently completed or under-construction buildings in that shot that didn't exist five years ago. South Loop rises fast.

left of center Apr 20, 2018 5:50 PM

^ Add in the GP2 site, and its looking like we will get a very nice South Loop cluster

aaron38 Apr 20, 2018 6:27 PM

After the crane jump, I can now see it standing out well above the neighboring buildings in the skyline. If that's at the final height of the building, it'll provide a nice bridge between the Loop and those towers on Roosevelt.

Now imagine OGP 2 and 1000M... I get chills just thinking about it.

The south facing offices in the Standard Oil Building are going to have better views in the near future

Hmmmmmm... those last few pictures make me like the building a lot less right now. I'm refraining judgement until fully glassed up and after it gets a nice window wash but... idk... something seems very off from the street view

^ Great set, Solar. I wonder what they're installing at the Ebony Jet bldg. Mechanical equipment is my guess.

Re Essex; I like the little bit of flare with the window mullions at the setback. Hope they incorporate more of that on another level towards the top.

Bombardier May 2, 2018 1:45 PM

^Take a look at the rendering on the 1st page. This detail occurs 2 more times. I agree the detail looks sharp!

They're taking stuff out—including part of the north wall—for residential conversion.

Notyrview May 2, 2018 2:45 PM

Yeah, the detail on this one is really good. It doesn't take that much to make a glass box a little more dynamic. It would have been nice to see those stilts in the original rendering but at least they didn't VE out the fins and mullions. I really lurve mullions.

chris08876 May 2, 2018 10:38 PM

Coming out nicely. I like the vibrant nature of it.

I am aware of this building’s history, but man is it ugly.

And before Steely and others jump all over me, I actually do like well-done Brutalism. This ain’t it.

left of center May 3, 2018 10:24 PM

This is an ugly angle though, most of the picture is dominated by the ugly party wall.

It's not a pretty building, but the street facing facade isn't *too* bad. There's certainly much worse out there, brutalist or otherwise.

That said, we really need to get rid of the last two or three remaining lots on Boul Mich. Having them linger around is just plain embarrassing.
