More like Hyatt Eccentric, am I right people?

Is it just the white garage being torn down?

The white structure and the building behind it (that says AVON) were part of the garage. Both will come down....

My joke was funnier.

I just now realized that this building is coming up right next to St. Mark's. That's one of Rittenhouse Square's best architectural treasures. The contrast the Hyatt Centric makes with it could be a very interesting one.

Demolition has been slow and steady with that one - a lot of interior work, stripping it down and getting rid of the building's guts. But man, the exterior is really turning into a graffiti'd eyesore - eager to get it knocked down and this project underway.

I was just over there and saw nothing happening. Not one person on site.

I'm curious if they closed the 17th Street sidewalk only for the demolition phase or if the City is letting them do that for the the entire construction period.

The City seems to be ok with letting sidewalks be closed for long periods of time for construction, as long as the proper permit is paid for. Councilman Gym was making some noise early this year about making it harder and more expensive for sidewalks to be closed. Something about having to prove there's no other option. Sounds good to me.

They can set up support/scaffolding type under construction facade or the build for people to walk under if there is no other alternative. I've also seen them put water-filled plastic jersey barriers on the street as a pedestrian path when the sidewalk is closed. Each solution is a case-by-case analysis.

So, once this building gets demolished (which is evidently moving at a sloth's pace), how long will it be before we see some construction?

probably a while- last time I checked no new construction zoning or building permits existed for the hotel

I live near here, and this garage demolition is agonizingly slow...I walk by all the time for signs of progress. There was lots of emptying out and internal demo for awhile, but everything has seemed to slow down lately...

shadowbat2 Dec 15, 2017 9:45 AM

I walk by this site frequently and on Thursday, I spotted something new:
Fencing has just gone up along this alleyway-it was not like this on Tuesday when I was here last. Looks like hardcore demo may actually start soon....
