Here's how the neighborhood changed when the Hollywood Freeway cut through the area. First, a view from 1948. I'm not sure what businesses were in either of the marked buildings in 1948 - I've included the outlines for consistency with my later aerial images.

I found this March 1953 picture on LAPL. It shows the new Hollywood Freeway looking south, and includes the northwest corner of the block we're discussing at the far left. I wish the picture extended a little further left so we could see the Rollerbowl/Stardust building.

This 1972 image shows how the Hollywood Freeway changed a square block into a triangle. It looks like the area to the left of the Rollerbowl building was completely cleared, although some of residences on De Longre Avenue survive.

Historic Aerials

I've skipped forward to 2004 to show how the Home Depot building shares none of its footprint with the old Rollerbowl/Stardust building. By comparing the images on Historic Aerials with the historical images on Google Earth, it appears that the Rollerbowl/Stardust building was demolished between 1980 and 1989. The Home Depot building was built sometime between 1994 and 2002.

Now that I've looked at the photo a little longer, I can see a diagonal guy-wire tethered to the Hotel Decatur sign. -so I guess it's on the right.

I actually snorted when I watched this one!. Well done, Grayb:yes:eard!

A bit of trivia relating to the light green and black automobiles seen in the lower right foreground. The light green car is a 1950 Pontiac Streamliner 2-door and was my first car. I am not as up on my Chevys of the period but the black car is a Chevy. Both makes shared nearly identical styling from 1949 to 1952. the beauty of this shot is that the view shows the two key identifying features of both. Chevys had a slightly shorter front end and a flat section at the top of the front wheel well opening, whereas the Pontiacs had a longer front end and a symmetrical arch to the wheel well.

This nonsense should aid in differentiating the two marks in other street scenes posted on NLA. No need to thank me. Wasting time and creating boredom is my reward. . .

My first car was also a '50 Pontiac although in my case a Catalina two-door hard top. Bought it from the widow Wilson who didn't drive and had left it in the side driveway of her house for several years following her husband's passing. Paid thirty-five dollars for it, bought four used tires and a brand new battery at the Richfield station and I was good to go. Got a lot of service out of that car.

The "105 N" sign is correct. Mooney's Seiberling Service Station was at 105 North Oxnard Boulevard, Oxnard (the clue was the building on the right). It now sells Arco fuel under the name Lashkari's Service Station.
