ER...This was taken on a family vacation to Mexico City and Acapulco. These days the only time I travel to Mexico are for my dentist appointments.

Planters or cauldrons placed at each end of the roof line are another nice touch evoking the Fox logo.

Interesting that these renovations make them all look like something imported from India....hmm.

Here's another view of an earlier sign. I prefer the original design and sign. Next door there used to be a neat little restaurant where my roommate Walter and I used to have lunch. They had the best classic sirloin beef hamburgers in the neighborhood.

The world of tomorrow, today?

Interesting wall decorations seem ahead of their time - considering the relatively conservative design of building and autos. Wireless? Nabisco? Jetsons? Or maybe a throwback to the Arts and Crafts movement? Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters?

It may not be noir and it's been posted here before, but not in such grand scale. A time when everyone knew the area code, antenna placement determined television viewing, there was virtually only one long distance carrier, green and blue savings stamps were on their way out, and when you could still put $100 down to buy a car . . .

Seems to fit with a recent post discussing a car wash on La Brea and Santa Monica?

Best I can tell, the Texaco Station at the northeast corner is now a mini-mall. Goodbye space. Hello density.

This is as close as I could get. For some reason the 'gate' spooked the google-mobile driver. (maybe there was a warning on that sign)

As a favor, I attended one of those murder-mystery dinner parties in Claremont. After driving the 32 miles from L.A. I was told I had to
play a girl's part :(, in a dress! I was Missy Link, saloon keeper. -my friends still laugh about it to this day.

And yes, Claremont is in Los Angeles County.

I have a curious mind, so I did some research on the Hellman building [mentioned in the ad as the home office of the medical device pictured]. Evidently its now a nice loft and office space building. So there it stands, still proud and tall in the old bank district.

As a mere side note...the following:

Also, I was wondering about that medical device ER thrust on us today...staring out from an old ad. More research. It appears that one can become almost addicted to the pleasures afforded such a medical device but much caution is advised. The greater the circumference of the tool...the great the danger. Again, Oh, just in case anyone's interested...Amazon dot com did have this medical device for sale but they're currently out of stock. Maybe one could ask their Dr. about where to obtain this tool if you're feeling a bit in need. I would imagine a Dr. would advise caution. Noirish is truly the webpage that enlightens us.

This location appears to be Beacon St. and Ninth. In the distance we see the SS Catalina steamship rounding the channel on it's way to Avalon.

I'm so happy that you posted this photo. I took a picture of the Owl about 1989 or 90 when I was running around downtown looking for the Rosslyn and generally on a noir blitz. I thought it was the noirist thing I'd seen all day.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...elle/IMG-5.jpg
I was standing across the street at Cole's. There was actually a fellow in the front chair getting his ears lowered so I felt like a tourist and didn't want to get closer- both he and the barber were really cool looking guys though.

Also, that cocktail ring watch is amazing. :)

A few mixed messages for a durable clientele.

Ignore the razor wire. It should not remind you of getting scalped before the barber works his magic. Think of it as last year's "tinsel."

"We never close." - "If you can gain entrance, you are probably safe." Barber carries no cash.

Glad to know I can get a trim at 3 AM, if only I could find a safe parking spot for my "borrowed" car.

But a shave at the LA County Fairground Stables is so much more convenient. . . .
