Can someone do a quick photoshop and show us what it would look like if the slanted end were to be extended, along with the straight end, to make a pointy roof? we could use a pointy roof in the skyline, along with a 1000+ footer in the west loop. The random 958' is annoying, just get it up past 1000!

^Dude, awesome. thanks! makes the original look like a tree stump. this looks like its "natural" design while the original feels like it got cut due to financing or NIMBY issues. They can do this, just put a damn hotel with scenic restaurant up in the thinner/higher floor plates and we're done.

Sweet jesus!

Great news and rendering...!

That would look great, a modern John Hancock. But it's fine the way it is also.

There is a resemblance, but I'm sure people said the same about the 2nd ever round building in the world.

Nice Reilly, I love statements like this.

^ Yeah, because a project that size in the Loop on top of one of the nation's busiest rail terminals needs you to approve the zoning.

SB obviously didn't kiss his ring before going public, like he actually cares what replaces the Amtrak garage. It's not going to matter here since there is no way that Rahm will let him screw over SB and put the Union Statiom redevelopment and an enormous potential property tax stream at risk. He may be able to fuck over other developers if they don't play by the usual rules but not these guys.

So this is just the first of 4 proposals to be announced. The winner will be announced Q1 2017.

Quote:

The four teams of finalists include Chicago-based development firms John Buck, Riverside Investment & Development, Golub and Sterling Bay, acclaimed architecture firms Studio Gang, Pelli Clarke Pelli, Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Gensler, and the world's second-largest commercial real estate brokerage: Jones Lang LaSalle.

Golub's team includes investors Macquarie Corporate Holdings, a subsidiary of Sydney, Australia-based financial services firm Macquarie Capital Group, and an affiliate of Walsh Construction. The architect is Gensler.

The JLL consortium includes John Buck and LaSalle Investment Management, the real estate investment arm of JLL. The design is by the firms of Jeanne Gang and Cesar Pelli.

Information from Amtrak on the Riverside venture, led by former John Buck executive John O'Donnell, does not include investment partners or architects.

The Sterling Bay group's architect is Skidmore Owings & Merrill.

I'd love to see the renderings of the other proposals, I think we all would.

Steely Dan Sep 12, 2016 2:40 PM

now that we have more info about what's going on, i've edited the thread title.

this thread will be the place to discuss all of the competing proposals as they are released.

hopefully we don't have to wait too much longer to seem them.

Agreed

And seeing as this has to do with a financial benefit to a company dealing with national transportation, I wouldn't mind seeing the mayor stand behind the project and in front of the alderman regarding these RFP's.

(yelling) SPYGUY!!!

2017 is when a developer will be chosen.

Randomguy34 Sep 12, 2016 3:00 PM

I'm curious seeing how much weight JLL plans to throw around with the help of Jeanne Gang and Cesar Pelli.

How about we scrap this plan and build all four proposals surrounding whatever building Reilly lives in to block out the sun at all times. Of course, the only problem with this plot is the children.

Ryanrule Sep 12, 2016 7:44 PM

How about his voter base finally dies and he goes away.

I don't think that's correct. I don't think that the final proposals are even due for a few more weeks.

The SOM design is pretty neat. Hopefully this happens.

Ned.B Mar 24, 2017 3:01 PM

Speaking as someone with a little insider info, I'm 100% certain that at least one team is still working on their proposal, and the deadline for submission is sometime in mid-April. I think the Q1 date is from an outdated schedule.

TimeAgain May 25, 2017 1:10 AM

I don't see any tall buildings there. :(

Should've went with SB.

Massive Union Station project gets a developer

City Hall and Amtrak have selected a real estate firm to lead an ambitious, $1-billion-plus redevelopment of Union Station and land adjacent to the historic structure for a variety of commercial uses.

...include renovating Union Station's now largely empty headhouse into retail, hotel and office space; constructing two 12-story residential buildings over the headhouse; developing 1.5 million square feet of new office space in two towers just south of the station, and constructing 500,000 square feet of residential space in another high-rise on railroad air rights.

That amounts to a total of 3.1 million square feet, all of which the city would like to be completed within six years.

I'm bummed we're not getting the gorgeous SOM design but actually prefer the programming of this – time to get more mixed-use in the area.

Maybe this will compel Sterling Bay to go for another site in West Loop Gate for their proposal. They could site it two blocks south at Harrison & Clinton, on the full block where the Holiday Inn and parking lot are, across the street from the Old Post Office.

Steely Dan May 25, 2017 1:17 AM

Uh oh!

More Goettsch blue glass boxes.

The natives will be restless.

Randomguy34 May 25, 2017 1:28 AM

It would have been amazing if a plaza was proposed for the site, since Chicago doesn't really have a proper open plaza, but looks like we got another parking podium instead :uhh:

rlw777 May 25, 2017 1:30 AM

ug leave the headhouse alone or design additions with respect for the current building.

emathias May 25, 2017 1:30 AM

I don't know the best thread to post this to, but Amtrak has selected a developer for Chicago's Union Station.

No details but the illustration makes it look like they didn't account for the bus facilities South of Jackson. The city said they want it done in six years.

Considering what Goettsch did with the Viceroy that's probably the aspect I'm most excited about architecturally here.

KWILLSKYLINE May 25, 2017 1:36 AM

God damn tragedy we didnt get that massive SOM beauty. That one would have been a skyline changer.
I like all the green space but the the office building are so
..generic.

I didn't see the plaza as elevated at first (looked more like it could be a shadow), but the article mentions that the plaza/outdoor spaces would be above the transit center, so maybe that's the ground floor?

LaSalle.St.Station May 25, 2017 1:39 AM

If this site can't generate a max density supertall tower, then safe to say Chicago will never see another one built again. I hate to see these prime sites close to the west loop train stations be underdeveloped continuously.
