Sterling Bay is proposing a skyscraper connected to Union Station that would become one of the city's tallest, as the Chicago-based developer vies for the assignment to redevelop real estate owned by Amtrak.

The firm wants to build a 958-foot-tall, 2 million-square-foot office tower alongside the massive transit facility in the West Loop and is already in talks with tenants large enough to kick off the project, Sterling Bay Managing Director Andy Gloor said today...

One piece from the article that hasn't been mentioned thus far is Bank of America being a potential anchor tenant. Apparently they are looking to consolidate their Chicago operations into one building. I would think they'd need easily more than a million sq ft for that. Perhaps one of our most in-the-know forumers would know the cumulative size of their ops here?

Have you heard anything about Bank of America related to this space, or just that they're looking to consolidate?

When I read Sterling Bay already had tenants lined up, I automatically thought Walgreens.

Proportions are a little bit off in my mind (extend it over 1000', hint, hint). But overall, looks great and very unexpected. Prefer using the air-rights for a supertall like this rather than building something clunky on top of Union Station.

I'd have figured only one of those should make sense, based on hvac costs, or sunlight needs of plants, etc. What's going on here I wonder.

Union Station itself can be extended upward - I think up to 20 floors, IIRC, on the existing foundations. Last time they talked about doing that, it was for a hotel, which would bring a little evening activity.
The master plan indicates that the new transit center would be integrated into the new building. The plan even holds out the possibility of expanding the transit center, perhaps to accommodate motorcoaches like the Amtrak Thruway route to Madison, WI.
