I'm guessing this is a leveling layer, and then the rebar will be assembled above that.

THE BIG APPLE Mar 11, 2012 2:42 PM

Wow, what a footprint. But it seems relatively small compared to the Shanghai Tower.

scalziand Mar 20, 2012 2:07 AM

Is the yellow steel going to be part of the core, or for distributing concrete like in Ping an? One week till the pour in any case.

As they would say in a Bud Light commercial, here we go!

Salakast Apr 29, 2012 9:12 PM

Ok so I see these giant holes always before creating a large tower, can someone explain why?

scalziand Apr 30, 2012 4:19 PM

The extra space is useful for mechanical equipment and parking. Structurally, the excavation can reach own to bedrock in areas where the bedrock is fairly shallow. In areas where bedrock is very deep, pilings or caissons are used to reach bedrock or a layer of soil that is strong enough to bear the weight of the tower. With pilings, it's not strictly necessary for a large excavation(see Burj Khaliffa). In these cases, the foundation may be excavated purely to gain extra space.
