From Census and other info, it does not appear that she lived in Los Angeles in 1925. She would have been 19 at the time and appears with her parents in Kansas in 1920 and in the Kansas State Census, also with her parents in 1925. There is a passport application in 1924 which lists her residence as the Wentworth Hotel in NYC. She married an Albert Sutherland in 1926 in New York. Sometime before 1928 she had gone on trip to France and returned in 1928 when there are travel documents found. Her passport application, dated September 18, 1924, is signed and attested to by Barbara Bennett, sister of actresses Constance and Joan Bennett. She had apparently divorced Mr. Sutherland and then at some point married a Deering Davis. All of this apparently occurred in New York. The only reference there is to her living in Los Angeles was in the 1940 Census when she is listed as working as a copy writer for a magazine ( according to articles, she did this work for a short time, before returning to New York) In that Census she was living at 1317-3 North Fairfax Ave in Beverly Hills. This building may be still there, although that number no longer appears in the Tax Assessor records. There are U-shaped apartments located in this area which are from the right era but there are no yards to speak of. An aerial view on Google street view, shows an area at the back of one of the buildings between the garages, which has some foliage. It is that annoying "cartoon" sort of stuff, through which you can't actually see anything. Looking at the photos, it appears that there are hills in the background, so it probably isn't at the North Fairfax address, but in someone else's backyard. Also, there do not appear to be those French doors on the buildings on Fairfax. She died in New York in 1985. |

Let's stick with the same time period [1976 in this cae] and travel over to the Los Angeles Hilton. (the Statler)
proto-alexa / aug. 23, 1976 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/9HB18p.jpg los angeles times archive "Mike Grady looked at his computer and asked it if it knew any songs. After a momentary pause, the machine obliged with “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” The Logicon Corp. computer, displayed at the Los Angeles Hilton just prior to the Torrance company’s annual meeting Monday, won’t be a contender for the Top 40. It’s tone deaf and sounds like it has a stuffed-up nose. But it’s a hit at what it’s designed to do, which is to allow humans to enter data into the computer simply by talking to it, and to get data out of the computer by having it talk back to them. The system used by Logicon and many other firms involves 60 sounds called “phonems.” These 60 phonems are stored in the computer’s memory. When it needs to “speak” a word, it searches its memory for the sounds that make up the word, puts them together and “speaks.” The 60 can make virtually any word in the English language." ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ That's a lot of mixed patterns for one room...octagonal carpeting, chequerboard ceiling pattern and a floral pattern on the wall. :yeech: |

'mystery' cliff accident(?) Here's a trio of getty images without the getty imprint over the pics. I had no idea the modern building in the 1955 photograph was the 'Sports Erection' (actually the Sports Connection)...but people in the area called it the Sports Erection. ha ha I went to a smaller gym a bit further down Santa Monica Blvd. (on the same/south side of the street) this one. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...923/ccHcHB.jpg my old gym card Only the foundation of my gym is left. https://i.imgur.com/Uicb4vb.jpg The description of the photos is inaccurate, however - the photos weren't taken “around Hollywood”, but from the Valley. In other words, the Hollywood Sign sits on the other side of the mountain. To get that exact view of Mt. Lee, one must be in Toluca Lake: https://i.imgur.com/0cgJrd0.jpg LINK TO SCENE ON GOOGLE MAPS I therefore suspect that the body of water shown in the photos is actually Toluca Lake itself. In the screenshot below, you can see that that Toluca Lake falls directly in the line-of-sight that one must view to see Mt. Lee from that angle. https://i.imgur.com/cxQWCcD.jpg |

Since that GSV view of the vacant lot where your gym used to be was taken in 2017, construction is well underway on a mixed use 3-4 story building in that spot. Since we are in this area, last week I discovered the following three aerials taken in February of 1955. (The fire photos are November, 1955.) They are all focused a little to the east of the above locations. I believe the Tropicana Motel opened in 1955. (A Los Angeles magazine article I just looked up said it was built in the 1940's!) The captions refer to the curved street as "Ramada Drive". I have never heard that street called that before and cannot find any period map listing with that street name. https://tessa.lapl.org/utils/ajaxhel...XT=&DMROTATE=0 Caption: Aerial view of Tropicana Motor Hotel, located at 8585 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood; view is looking northwest. The U-shaped hotel sits on the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd (running horizontally) and Ramada Drive (curved street running behind the hotel). The U-shaped hotel sits on the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd (running horizontally) and Ramada Drive (curved street running behind the hotel). The street running vertically on the extreme right is N. La Cienega Boulevard. Photograph dated February 12, 1955. ___ To the left of the motel, in the bottom photo for example, I am curious about that grouping of seemingly multi-level little buildings, or apartments?, on the corner. It just looks like an interesting design. Were the P.E. cars still running in 1955? Because I'm familiar with the street I'm also curious as to what some of the businesses are. The photos are from the Kelly-Holiday Mid-Century Aerial Photo Collection on LAPL. |
