We've seen this intersection so many times on NLA I almost didn't post the slide. - but then I noticed something curious.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/mwRBZQ.jpg
Sunset & Vine (1960)

On the far-right edge of the slide there is a small coctail lounge called Stan's Playrooms that I don't recall seeing from this angle.

Stan's Playrooms appears to be identical to the 25er cocktail lounges that were owned by Stan of Stan's Drive-in fame. (below)

skyscraperpage

GW figured out the white curve behind this 25er is the domed roof of the Wilshire Arts building.

Minutes ago, the slide sold for $283.00

Hmmm. . .I wonder why it is Stan's Playrooms (plural) and not Stan's Playroom (singular)?

Look at the rainbow of colored automobiles in this photo. You haven't seen that in many a year. Or decade.

I see Charlie Barnet is playing at the Palladium! (Or coming soon)

Photo taken at 3:20 p.m.*

There's a metal sign in the road, on the bottom left, that isn't in pictures of this intersection that I can recall seeing before.

Radio station KPOP is new to me.

Clear, blue sky looks unusual for 1960 Los Angeles.

Pretty common at major intersections back then for LAPD traffic detail to roll "No Left Turn" signs out for rush hours (remember when it was only an hour or two?) or other congested times and then roll them back onto the sidewalk afterward. IIRC, this practice ended with the adoption of left-turn-only lanes, etc. Traffic in the photo doesn't look bad at all, so maybe the lads didn't get around to putting the sign back after the morning rush..

Shadows suggest closer to early afternoon to me, FWIW.

Johnny Magnus likes to tell the story about his slogan: "Swing and sway with Sammy Kaye? Well, swing and sweat with Charlie Barnet!"

And, as it happens, KPOP and predecessors and successors have had quite a run: https://www.radioheritage.net/Story28.asp

Here's a second slide, dated 1960, that was probably taken by the same person who took the Sunset and Vine slide. (same seller)

So when was this awful (modernized) entrance tacked on the front?

If you look closely you can see the reflection of the wrought(?) iron sconces on the 'marquee'.

Thanks for the information on the Noir Noir.

I'm surprised this place avoided litigation over using the name. I don't think they'd get away with it now days.

8929 Sunset, today.*

That's quite a difference from the 1975 snapshot!

The thing about the Sunset Strip in its glory days, e_r, was that it was a "county island"--that is, though surrounded by incorporated land, it itself wasn't part of an incorporated city, least of all Los Angeles, so the rules were different (laxer, or lacking); and enforcement of what laws and rules there were wasn't by the LAPD but rather by ? the County Sheriff I guess, all of which brought about a . . . different aura.

^^^^
Pretty clever name for a strip joint on Sunset. Maybe the producers of the TV show thought it was clever so they didn't sue (the early '60s show may have been in reruns), or maybe they did sue and that's why the club closed. Honorary sleuth award for any person who finds out why the strip joint closed, or if they were sued. I bet Kookie was a regular at the strip joint. Maybe he was the parking lot attendant in the lot behind.

There are three 4 x 5 negatives for sale on eBay of the De Ville Motel and the surrounding area on 7th Street.

This is the negative I happened upon first. ...We're looking west on 7th Street.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/hwYqhH.jpg
eBay

I was peasantly surprised when I came across this 2nd negative looking east towards the Statler Hotel.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/wSZAt6.jpg
eBay

The policeman must be in al's enjoying a cup of coffee....hmm. . .I wonder if al's is lower case because de Ville is? (lower case)

note the map store down the block.

And lastly, the 3rd negative was taken from the De Ville parking ramp looking south towards the fine old building across the street.

Sadly, the building across the street is gone. :( ...Does anyone know the name of the building or its purpose? (and when it was demolished)

I thought it was an apartment building but then I noticed it doesn't have a front entrance.

The de Villa Motel is still in business as the City Center Hotel.

1123 W. 7th Street

The club's former name was Rogue's Gallery - seen here in 1973.

Roger Smith, one of 77 Sunset Strip's stars, last screen role was in the 1968 film Rogue's Gallery.

Here's a reminder of the Motel de Ville postcard that I posted back in 2013. There's a more recent GSV image of the building in the full post.

Sounding ritzy like the Cadillac, there were probably Motel de Villes all over the country. I'm reminded of a contemporanous Motel de Ville in my hometown of New Orleans...along a long strip of humping academies out toward the airport there. (This De Ville is gone.)

The DeVille is still there, but as America's Best Value Inn - next door to City Center Hotel (which hadn't changed from the old photos).
