I have a total of 22 photographs missing from imageshack that I posted a couple weeks ago. :(

I've replaced 2 so far.
__

Hoss, I can't see the two photographs you posted earlier this afternoon.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=33936

I'm curious, are they visible on your computer?

Here's a fun jumbo postcard.

I think the lanes might have been set up in the Long Beach Arena.

Here's a second postcard I found that mentions the Pueblo Oratorio.

Does anyone know where the chapel was located on the hotel grounds?

Starting in November 1945, into 1950 the radio reality show Bride & Groom was broadcast from Chapman Park Hotel. The host interviewed couples about how they met, where they went on their first date, etc (it's corney but kind of cute), then they would marry off-mike, in the Chapman's chapel, and afterward came back on the show. In exchange they got a bunch of loot like appliances and tableware plus a free honeymoon.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...Uh1Qw60_57.jpg postcard advertising Bride & Groom

The mural in the postcard "the Annunciation" was done by Alfredo Ramos Martinez in 1936 and apprently painted over after only a few years. In 1957 the Secret Harbor restauraunt now occupying the Zephyr space expanded into the then-unused chapel and demolished the apse where the mural was. Part of the article about it from the Times at the time the the Chapman was being wrecked in 1967:

:previous: this fence matches the fence in photo #6. (I believe it's higher than the fence in photos #1 thru #5, also it's lighter in color & doesn't have the diagonal supports)
so...this might be a different venue than what appears in #1 thru 5.

e_r, the "half a church" in photo #5 is the German Evangelical Church on the NE corner of 12th and Hope,
adjacent to Fiesta Park, that we've seen before.

the left field fence:

Seems that host photobuckit has amended/scrambled some preexisting settings. I also wonder if some of the photo prestidigitation may be due to posting higher resolution "png" images instead of jpeg, pushing bandwith parameters for the image host site and this site. FWIW, reposted newer links to lower res images still resulted in a few blank images - while I was logged. Then, magic reappearances after log off.

These images are from a 1944 -Santa Monica Blvd panorama (5900 block) near its intersection with Tamarind Ave. http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...id/72267/rec/2 Conveniently located near the cemetery. Note street lamp tops are shrouded. Probably part of the WWII black-out effort. Recall seeing a NLA map demarcating blackout areas, but they likely changed as the war progressed.

Since we've been in the neighborhood recently.... According to the USCDL, the house was Nathan Jacoby's restaurant ca. 1890; apparently the librarians think "res" in city directories refers to 'restaurant'. According to the 1886-1887 CD, this was the residence of "N Jacoby" of Jacoby Brothers, who appear to have had a number of clothing and shoe stores. N Jacoby is listed at "318 S Fort"--which of course became Broadway. There were renumberings as well as street-name changes in the '90s, so I'll have to investigate to see if early Sanborns reveal what Jacoby's house may have become...perhaps 418...although much of the "old" in these blocks was swept away for commercialism and Jacoby's house may have been demolished soon after the photo was taken.

I'm sure we've noted that change before, but here's what the Times had to say in a story on July 5, 1989:

In 1890 Part of [Broadway] was first called Calle Fortin--Fort Street--because it passed through the hilltop Ft. Moore. Another section was known as Eternity Street, because it led to a cemetery; Downey Avenue, after Gov. John G. Downey, and Buena Vista Street, whose "good view," as legend has it, was the view from the hillside of the women's bathing pools (where the senoritas wore bathing dresses). City officials eventually decided to rename Fort Street because the area's many German citizens had trouble with the pronunciation--it would come out "Fourth Street," causing confusion with a thoroughfare by that name. By 1910, all sections were dedicated under the one name, Broadway.

Notorious views of the Jacoby Bros. Store.

Freeman M Hallett is listed as a photographer in the contemporary City Directories, but his home address isn't given as 3302 Emmet Street until 1912. He worked for Putnam & Valentine, a photographers who were at 208 N Spring Street.

This LINK has a sample episode one can listen to, and a google search will bring up a couple websites about this radio series.

I posted about the Stiles Oliver Clements designed Vons store at the Broadway-Crenshaw Center in post #33284. A couple of my images, and a couple in Noircitydame's follow-up in post #33285, show the extant Broadway department store at that location. This is Julius Shulman's view of The Broadway. It's "Job 142: Raymond Loewy, The Broadway (Department Store) (Los Angeles, Calif.),1947".
