I don't recall Sulphur Baths being anywhere near East Los Angeles. (I might have just forgotten)

I hope you don't mind that I enlarged it.

Judging by the odd angles towards the front I'd say that is the front door the two ladies were posing in front of.

You are correct . . . the door that you've arrowed is to the right of the only pool corner that's not a right-angle. The two ladies in the photo
must be standing outside the office near the left edge of this 1906 Sanborn Map:

Re: The 'Atomic Dawn' photographs taken in Los Angeles.

Hi Harrys

Yes, we covered the atomic blasts earlier in the thread.

You can see the flash from a Feb. 6, 151 atomic test Here.

You can see the flash from a May 5, 1955 atomic test Here

You can see an undated atomic flash Here (it includes the Richfield Building in the distance)

Very sad. It was seen here in post 6928 in 2012:

I came across this jewel-box of a Los Angeles funeral parlor online, which turns out to have been an early work by
Paul Williams--note the classical details that would become one of his hallmarks. It was the Conner-Johnson
Mortuary at 1400 East 17th Street, at Naomi...sadly, now a parking lot.

It's not by Paul Williams, but nearby at the the corner of 18th and Naomi is the Hamilton Methodist Church, now,
sans the church's best windows, the Christian Light Missionary Baptist Church:

An eclectic roofline, including a witch's hat and a bit of the Alamo. The finial on the main tower is (mostly) still there....

That second postcard that Mackerm found is dated "circa 1915" on Ebay.

The Eastlake Sulphur Baths were moved across Mission Rd. to a new location at 332 Keith St. in 1913.

If the 1915 date is accurate the postcard likely shows a differently configured version of the building to fit the new lot.

I think this is the Eastlake Sulphur Baths on Keith St. in a detail from a 1924 aerial of Selig Zoo.

I spotted the Keith St. natatorium on BillinGlendale's map and was totally flummoxed.

Thanks to your research I now know it's the Eastlake Sulphur Baths at a new location.....Bravo! :worship:

Postscript:

Wouldn't the move to a new location require the owners to drill a new well.

MUNICIPAL FERRY ISLANDER OF LOS ANGELES ...(is written on the side)

Here's a slightly closer look.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/RngtuT.jpg

The car are cool. (there's even a tow truck) I believe there's a guy sitting on his bicycle next to the blue car.

P.S....I tried to read what's written on the tow truck but it wasn't to be.

So where was this ferry going that people needed to bring their cars with them?

Here's a closer look.

Does anyone recognize this place?

And if you look even closer, there's a building behind it that has "Our Lady Chapel" painted on the wall.. Huh?...Shouldn't that be over by the old Plaza Church?

The Cordova Bar at S. Figueroa and W. 8th Street was probably named for the Hotel Cordova located there previously.

Also the reverse writing on this one: (notations of "Bishops Elected" possibly linked to the Our Lady Chapel location?)

The "Bishops Elected" were bishops in the newly formed Evangelical Methodist Church founded in 1915. Our Lady Chapel is Roman Catholic.

The Cordova Bar & cocktail Lounge. Figueroa & 8th Street.

Hmm. .so when the Hotel Cordova was torn down they saved the corner section. .

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/LJkcg6.jpg

. .which then became the Cordova Bar?

I'm going to have to agree with you, e_r and say yes they did just save the corner, kind of like you could with Lego. It's on the street corner, the proportions look right and the details seem to match.
If true, it must have been one happening' spot to warrant saving while the vast majority of the hotel was demolished.

Do detailed maps like this exist for all parts (every city block) of L.A. and other cities, or just commercial areas? How far do they go back? From the 19th century to the present? How often are they updated? Are they digitized and available online, or do you need to go to places like the Hall of Records? Who made these maps?--Government? Street map companies like Thomas Bros.? Title Insurance companies...? Sorry to inundate you with questions, but these land use maps are interesting. Ultimately they must have something to do with taxes or commerce, as collecting taxes is key to governments and commerce is key to business. I keep thinking of that scene from "Chinatown", where Gittes (Nicholson) goes to the Hall of Records and pretends to cough so he can tear out a map platt page like this without being heard by the snooty clerk.

!907 Gardena

https://i.imgur.com/mOx2pTn.png?1eBay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/23416700807...8672%7Ciid%3A1

From what I have read about Moneta which eventually became part of Gardena, the early town center was at Western Ave. & 166th St. That would be my best guess as to the location of the postcard photo.
