Here are a couple more slides from the group. [c.1966]
Some valuable land not yet in use.............................................I'm not sure what's going on in this upper right corner. (maintenance area?) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/dsXGnj.jpg Where Shamoo? I spy the Souvenir Shop! (orange trash receptacle in front) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/El6Jca.jpg The casual al fresco dining experience (i.e. snack bar :D ) appears to be on the roof of one of the buildings. The middle building might be...restrooms? . |

Here is another place that is not around anymore.
https://i.postimg.cc/3xLZ0JDC/lion-country-4.png My Photo Lion country Safari was down in the Irvine/Laguna Hills area, off the 405 Freeway. We were there around 1975-1976. It was kind of fun. You drove around in your car, and the animals wandered around loose. https://i.postimg.cc/59vpKVZb/lion-country-3.jpg My Photo You stayed in your car, unless you wanted to be part of lunch. https://i.postimg.cc/Wbw8j7Ny/lion-country-2.jpg My Photo It lasted until about 1984 , when they realized that there was more profit in building expensive houses. |

Pioneer Cafe, 8739-41 S. Vermont, Los Angeles Calif....PL - 9512 https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/zMumfM.jpg Rediscovered in an old file of mine I thought I would take a shot in the dark and google google images for "Pioneer Cafe Los Angeles". After looking at photographs of Pioneer Pigeon Chicken..this black and white photograph popped up. [see below] "Mr. Yukio Suzuki, owner and operator of the Pioneer Cafe." https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/XKxyNn.jpg calisphere https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/NG15u3.jpg but as you can see, the address is different. . |

Nowadays, you'd probably get some idiot Instagram “influencer” running out to pose for pictures with the lions. I don't know how/if the laws were different back then, but such a place seems like it would be impossible to insure nowadays. |

A mystery in the West Adams district. "Los Angeles CA RPPC Photo Postcard Boy in Car Driver's Seat at 2170 W. 25th St.* https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/pNwyZf.jpg eBay If the car is any indicator..the family appears to have been rather well off. The address is on the REVERSE https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/pmM3GH.jpg GW, I thought you might know what family lived at 2170 W. 25th St. *2170 W. 25th St. is a block north of W. In this area. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/QQeAWD.jpg google_earth Let's take a closer look. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/vxPRBq.jpg Does anyone recognize what kind of car this is? It's either a British car or the photograph is flipped. (the steering wheel is on the wrong side for an American car) . |

Loves
https://oldlarestaurants.com/wp-cont...oads/loves.jpg
There was a time when Love’s Wood Pit Barbecue restaurants dotted the California landscape and seeped into other states, as well. Some folks believe it’s impossible to get decent barbecue in a chain. You need a small, one-of-a-kind restaurant in a building that used to be a welding shop and was converted by some guy who’s obsessive about good bbq and has been doing it all his life. I’ve been to some great places that fit that description and also some where the food was close to inedible. There were some changes of ownership and some lawsuits in the Love’s operation. A lot of them closed and the ones that didn’t changed names. The Love’s in Brea, for instance, changed its name to Riley’s and went on serving the exact same menu for years. The one in Chula Vista renamed itself The Great Rib Restaurant, which was a subtitle that Love’s sometimes used in its advertising and on its signs. Eventually, all such after-life Love’s closed. According to the company website, there’s still a Love’s in Jakarta, Indonesia but I’m skeptical that’s so. If it exists, it’s the only one. Thanks to oldlarestaurants.com for the pictures |
Lawry’s
https://oldlarestaurants.com/wp-cont...s/lawrys01.jpg
Lawry’s was in a building on the east side of La Cienega. Then they outgrew that and in 1947, they moved into the above building on the west side of the boulevard. A few years ago, they rebuilt the old building and moved back into it, and the building depicted above turned into a restaurant called The Stinking Rose, where everything (including — no kidding — the ice cream) is rife with garlic. Does anyone have a picture of M'Goos Restaurant?
https://oldlarestaurants.com/wp-cont...ads/mgoos1.jpg
There were at least three M’Goo’s Restaurants — one in Pasadena serving the Cal Tech crowd, one in Westwood Village serving the U.C.L.A. crowd, one on Hollywood Boulevard serving transients and derelicts, some of whom had once been in the Cal Tech and U.C.L.A. crowds. |
