Hmmm...is that the same man in all the poses? Is this some sort of photo-trickery-?

No ER, this is not a ''trick'' photo. This is a dodecagonic family. Its when all the children in one family look the same....this is very rare.

Looks like fun with Photo Shop with a number of shots of the same subject in different posses being overlaid on a photo of a 1931 car and it all being made to look like 1931 via a bit of shading to make it look like it would have been taken in 1931. Nothing in the photo is probably from 1931 aside from the car itself. The shadow beneath the car is the first clue when compared to the shadow behind the legs of those supposedly seated on the running board. Somewhat skillfully done, but far from perfect.

I believe the correct term in this case would be "chrysletonic".

I found this group of photographs of downtown Los Angeles several years ago on ebay. I just re-discovered them on an old CD of mine.
The seller didn't include dates or any other specific information. (which is why I hesitated to post them when I first found them)

This one I know, it's 326 South Spring Street, once home to World Heavyweight Champaign Jim Jeffries' Bar.
Here's another photograph: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=22155

It would take me quite awhile to research each photo, so I've decided to go ahead and just post them.

Undated. Per source, these wooden"cots" were used for immobilizing violent inmates at Lincoln Heights (LA) Jail. Although it would be possible to pin down a prisoner to virtually anything in this cell, these structures do not appear to be purpose built for restraining inmates. More likely they enabled the luckier inmates an opportunity to avoid sitting in or on whatever pooled on the floor.

:previous: Interesting two posts Godzilla.
I remember discussing that one vending machine....it's for fresh apples! (you can see them stacked up inside the machine)
And how did that cell block lock work? Did they simply poke the numbered steel buttons? I've never seen anything like it.

A couple weeks ago, ER found this great series of aerial photos from the 1930's. I noticed something interesting in this one that shows Union Station.

First, congrats to e_r, godzilla, HossC, and FredH and 3940dxer for the high quality posts the past few days.

I was going to attack e_r's slides first, but I realized someone(s) would doubtless beat me to it, which was exactly what happened :)

I will point out that e_r's picture #4 has what looks like "Maxwell's Cafe" posted as "out of bounds for service personnel." This dates the photo to no earlier than 1942 and no later than 1946.

A poster in the window can be read with some difficulty as advertising the presence of Kim Smilo on the Organ. The internet lists a Herman Kim Smilo (b. 5/14/18 d. 11/7/82) and various ads from the 50s state he was playing organs at various places in LA including the mob-owned Seven Seas Cafe. In an ad Kim put out, he mentioned that he was "sober and dependable," presumably qualities rarely seen in the places like the Maxwell Cafe.

The Out of Bounds (downtown) area was primarily along Main between 3rd and 8th streets. I have a declassified list of these places...somewhere, that i got from a FOIA request to the Army some years ago. I will look for it again, more to follow.

mrfredmertz Sep 23, 2014 6:45 AM

"Sober and Dependable"

The phrase "Sober and Dependable" often appeared in the 20s, 30s and 40s on ads in casting publications. Sadly, it referred to African Americans performers (ie, they won't embarrass you with their behavior.) I hate that phrase. And all the other ones that come to mind when I hear it. BTW, eBay had a bunch of "Dependable Negro" badges for sale a while ago. Towns in the south would issue these to black men and women who worked for the city, so they could flash them to avoid the perpetual stop and frisks. O(On second thought, the phrase may have been "Trustworth....")
