Still looking for an answer regarding what originally occupied the space at 370 N. Fairfax.
In meantime, across the street (415 N. Fairfax) next to what is now Cantors used to be an A&P and 419 was a Safeway! (1936) http://www.groceteria.com/place/cali...ons-1932-1942/ http://media.merchantcircle.com/3208...HKZo_full.jpeggoogle Around the corner on Beverly in or around 1932: 7161 Piggly Wiggly; 8100 Von's Grocery (1936) now a mini mall; 8108 Piggly Wiggly; and 8110 an A&P! Both 8108 and 8110 may now be occupied by a Linen Store (below). http://img1.nelso.us/9a21b2f863d0f76...fd_640x478.jpghttp://images1.citysearch.net/assets...5/JCsSjgMv.jpggoogle According to the source, only the Vons was listed as a grocery market by 1936 so either the others moved or were occupied by non-chain merchants. http://www.groceteria.com/place/cali...ons-1932-1942/ "Compiled from city directory listings" |

Retro-future Los Angeles, February 1953. I love this illustration (notice that it says Figueroa on the monorail car)

From the Sept 30, 1951, AA skeds--a couple of years before regular nonstop service timetableimages.com |
If I'm reading the chart correctly GW, the one stop was Chicago Midway. I would have guessed a location further west....say Kansas City.
But then again, I don't know the fuel capacity of the airplane (and of course passengers were probably picked up in Chicago) Nevermind...I'm just babbling. __ Here is another 'one stop' ad, this time from TWA circa 1950 (flying the sleek Lockheed Constellation). http://imageshack.us/a/img856/5427/aaadonestop.jpg http://www.vintageadbrowser.com/airl...t-ads-1950s/63 http://imageshack.us/a/img834/4853/aacons.jpg http://taxi-dog.com/2011/12/ __ |

I like these vintage time tables GaylordWilshire. What make of airplane did United fly at this point in time?

:previous:
American and United were flying DC6s on the transcon routes--TWA would get its bigger Super Constellations online by the end of '52, and then AA & UA responded with the DC7 a year or so later. The Super Con & DC7 were finally able to sustain transcon nonstops--only westbound at first, then both ways after improvements to engines and some wrangling with the government over crew hours. Jets came with AA's 707s in January 1959. |
