I wasn't aware of this proposal for an incline railway in Griffith Park. http://imageshack.us/a/img833/6370/a...fithpark19.jpg http://www.skyscrapercity.com/ Looking at the illustration I wondered which summit? With a little research I found there are six named summits in Griffith Park. Bee Rock (1056') Mt. Chapel (1614') Mt. Bell (1582') Mt. Hollywood (1625') Glendale Peak (1184') below: I also came across this rather discouraging photograph of 'Bee Rock'. http://imageshack.us/a/img17/4856/aa...iffithpark.jpg http://danshikingblog.blogspot.com/2...-august-5.html So what's the point of the fence....to discourage suicides? ___ |

http://hollywoodhistoricphotos.ipowe...tore/index.php Monkey Island's sets and features must have been huge -- notice how small the workmen and monkeys appear! On the blogs I've saw different opinions about the location but I think I know where it was. More later... |

Temple Israel of Hollywood, 1948 and 2011. Discovering that Hollywood Boulevard extended west of Laurel Canyon reminded me again of the known but quiet part of the street between the Canyon and La Brea. I know we've seen the church nearby that actor Donald Crisp nearly drove his Cadillac into (check it out here), but here's another religious edifice worth a look. UCLA, Google SV |
Protest against removal of trolley system in L.A.
I am practicing searching LAPL and posting photos from the web. Hope to also include better links to my LA trip from a week ago if this works. Thinking about how much effort is being put into adding to the light rail lines now in 2012, citizens at the time realized how much they would regret removing what they had then. Caption at LAPL says, "Folks from San Fernando park a covered wagon outside City Hall as a way to express to the city fathers that this is the sort of transportation they'll need if the Pacific Electric is permitted to abandon its major interurban trolley sytem. Riding the wagon are William A. Trow, J. Win Austin and Lee Warburton. Photo dated: March 17, 1949. "
BTW, I KNOW this photo is backward not only because of the letting but there is no way to line up the Times Building with City Hall from this angle. Anyone know how to get this turned around or tell the LAPL they have it backward? http://jpg3.lapl.org/pics35/00067012.jpg |
Aah, that's better. (What would we do without Photoshop?)

If you ever have any corrections on LAPL material, just email them using the link at the bottom of the search interface: http://photos.lapl.org/carlweb/jsp/photosearchADV.jsp? They really do appreciate the help. |

http://www.lausd.net/kids/treasures/lg_mt_vernon.gif https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5...2520PM.bmp.jpg Marion Parker was abducted from Mount Vernon school at 4066 West 17th Street in 1927, around the time of the black & white shot at top. I'm not so naïve as to think that the building inspired by George Washington's house, later painted white, wouldn't also be covered by graffiti if it were still standing, but who could blame even grown-ups for covering the current incarnation with it? Apparently tags are a major problem for what is now the Johnnie Cochran Middle School at 4066 Johnny Cochran Vista. One site posits that the exterior of the school was changed for maintenance reasons, but it looks like a whole new building to me. Anyway, while the new school is uninspiring architecturally (to put it mildly), at least the entablature of the old school was saved and rests in the front yard. LAPL x 2; Google SV |
There wasn't any information on this photo I found on ebay. It looks like a still from a silent movie but I don't recognize the actor.
Can anyone pinpoint where this was taken? http://imageshack.us/a/img836/19/daredevilsceneebay.jpg found on ebay |

Well, e_r, I know that that's the old Central Division police station to the left... |
I couldn't remember the Marion Parker case so I googled her name. Oh boy, I'm surprised I didn't remember this murder because it was exceptionally brutal.

Thanks for the info G_W, I didn't recognize the old jail.
The two buildings with 'cupolas' are especially intriguing. They don't look like they belong downtown. They remind me of a mill or grain elevator. http://imageshack.us/a/img850/5273/daredevils1a.jpg |
This is one of the best summaries of the Parker case: http://www.cemeteryguide.com/gotw-parker.html.
And I remember that when we talked about the Parker story before, there was a bit of an Ayn Rand connection: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=1836. |
Speaking of police stations...

Here's a great noirish shot of the doorway of University Division, once at at 809 West Jefferson. The LAPL's caption: "At 12:01 a.m. today, Lt. Ronald Williamson locks up old University Division Police Station.... The Police Department transferred the division operations to a new station located at Denker and Santa Barbara Avenues. Photo dated: February 15, 1962." Here's a 1936 view of the station: http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/2...policefull.jpg The 1962 replacement described in the LAPL caption above: http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/92/newunivpolice.jpg Perhaps not quite as disappointing a replacement as that of Mount Vernon school, but the Denny's now on the site of the old station does add insult to injury....
