Here is architect Charles Whittlesey's now-demolished 41 Westmoreland Place from 11th Street, undated:

To make a long story short, Wesley Clark and Elden P Bryan developed the Westmoreland tract, at the center of which was gated Westmoreland Place...the gates were shamelessly copied from the St Louis private street of the same name. (Bits of the gate still exist at the sec of Olympic & Westmoreland--I think we've seen it on NLA before.... St Louis's gates are basically intact.) While the larger tract sold well enough, the gated "Place" was a big flop--too close in to attract the rich, who could afford cars and wanted to live farther away from downtown...such as in the also gated Berkeley Square, which was developed at the same time and on higher ground.

The Times of Sept 11, 1904, described the design of the house as being in the shape of Greek Cross--it was reported by the paper on Apr 8, 1906, as having been "finished first of this year."

A demo permit was issued on March 4, 1941.

As for the sloping corners--I'm reminded of the Longyear house at 3555 Wilshire Boulevard--it too had these corners (and not dissimilar details)...seems I never have found the original architect (Cooper Corbett made later alterations)...but maybe it was Whittlesey.

The sign saying "Hayden Clinic" is a prop only and has nothing to do with the real purpose of the building. The screen grab is from a 1982 episode of the "Falcon Crest" TV series. The only thing I know is that the building is somewhere in Greater L.A., most likely within the usual 30-mile filming zone.

Thank you so much for your help!

Just to let you know I finally found out where the above building was situated:

It used to be located at 115 North Hollywood Way in Burbank, CA, very close to Gate 4 of Warner Bros. Studios. It was demolished in 1998 and replaced by a new structure. I was able to track down our show's original location manager, and he remembered. Unfortunately, I didn't find any pictures of the house. The only thing I came across was an aerial view of WB Studios from the 1970's with that street in the somewhat blurry background -- unless you know it's that building, you wouldn't recognize it in that picture. I hope to come across a few photos sooner or later.

Anyway, thanks again to everybody for looking.

231 Something

There is no location available for this house numbered 231, other than it was probably in LA somewhere. The photo is by
E. W. Fortune at 239-1/2 S. Spring, who was at that address only in the 1891 and 1892 city directories:

Here you can see the 231 above the steps. The man seems to be holding a garden hose spouting water:

It turns out this is 'East Wynyate House', a smaller home built on the Graham property in 1896. (for Mrs. Graham's relatives)

This is Wynyate House.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/NF5Ri7.jpg
https://calisphere.org/item/ark:/13030/kt2v19q85k/

This three-story redwood Queen Anne Victorian mansion was built in 1887 for Donald M. Graham, the first mayor of South Pasadena, and his wife, Margaret Collier Graham,
a well-known writer and literary figure. (Wynyate is Welsh for "vineyard")

(no address was given)

__

Both Wynyate and East Wynyate are still there, on Lyndon Street at Glendon Way. It's not possible to get a decent picture of either due to the foliage. Legend has it that a lemon eucalyptus tree west of the house was planted by John Muir during a visit. It's yet another site that I've been to because it's on the National Register of Historic Places while also being within half a mile of Route 66. My pics aren't worth posting, though - mostly just plants on the side of the hill.

Here's a link to the location - there is a nice gate on the corner of the property that says 'Wynyate' on top. The right-hand driveway goes to Wynyate, and the left-hand one to East Wynyate.

I have to admit I wasn't familiar with the Oakmont Country Club. It's located at 3100 Country Club Drive (at the end of Beaudry Blvd.), Glendale CA

Here it is today.

Needless to say I was disappointed. It looks more like a 1990s shopping mall than a country club. :(

After a few more searches, I found a postcard that shows how the building looked back in 1922. And it was spectacular!

Notice how the current building mimics the tall peaked roofs of the original.
(I wonder if any part of the original building still exists / under the modern design)

Someone comparing Jerry Lewis's restaurant with Dean Martin's said, "Dino's suggested a classy evening of good food and wine, whereas Jerry's implied an evening of food thrown at you by loud waiters."

Sometime after that it became the Classic Cat Strip Club. This 1974 photo shows the place at the bottom left.

You can see a recreation of The Classic Cat in the movie AUTO FOCUS. Also noted is that the place itself can be seen in the 70's film "Zero In and Scream" and in the 1973 film "The Outside Man" mentioned previously on NLA.

In the direct center of this photo is a neon sign for "Filthy McNasty's" which is now where the Viper Room is located.

University Stereo came after the Classic Cat and then Tower Video.

Tower Video closed and has looked like this...

My scanner does 35mm so I pieced this box camera large negative together with Photoshop using the panoramic feature. This is one part of that negative before integration. I forgot how the street cars, power lines and telephone lines used so many aerial wires. Also this photo has a nice view of Bozzani Motors

Help needed. Cutting down of historical trees along Boyle avenue

The city has begun cutting down some very old trees along Boyle Avenue, between E. 1st and E. 4th Streets. Most still remain.

There is no environmental impact report. The city said it was not required under current laws. I think they are referring to CEQA law so I am looking for a CEQA attorney in L.A.

If anyone can point me to such an attorney, or if anyone has any other input, etc. then please let me know.

One way that this forum can definitely help is by referring me to historical images of these trees, and also historical context for them. For example, I know they are very old, but I don't know if anyone can actually date them

Any, any help or communication is profoundly appreciated. This issue is very troubling for me and it harkens back visions of the Aliso and the Eagle Tree in Compton.

Thank you in advance for any input.

If it was still there in the late 60's, I wonder if the San Fernando earthquake might have been responsible for the new building. I know quite a few businesses on Honolulu in Montrose were hit hard by the quake and either had to be replaced or got the stucco treatment.

Here is some additional info and images I've come across:

I feel fairly certain that the trees in question are the ones in this image:
http://www.califaztlan.org/LANoirPics/workman1.jpg

The excerpt from this book may imply that Workman himself may have been responsible for the planting of these trees:

This is a recent image:
http://www.califaztlan.org/LANoirPics/workman3.jpg

I will try to take photos of the trees they've already cut for tomorrow.

Again, most of the trees still stand but are scheduled to come down soon. I think they are planning on cutting more down this Saturday. I'd like to stop this from happening if at all possible.
