For a film set in San Francisco, they sure spend a lot of time in DTLA (with a brief outing to the Lincoln Heights Jail).

Pacific Ocean Park area?

This is the Dexter (Street) Transfer interchange with ATSF where freight cars were exchanged between the Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe. Note that the tower carries a pair of Santa Fe logos. Santa Fe was very fond of these slogans and updated them regularly. The locomotives referred to in the title (see ER's original post below) are heading up a cut of cars to be dropped off here for the Santa Fe which will take them down to their First street Yard.

I worked this same job for the Santa Fe out of First Street Yard in 1964 at which time the safety slogan depicted a strange little manlike figure dressed in overalls called Axy Dent. On the roundhouse and shop buildings the slogan read Wipe out Axy Dent. On posters carried by the locomotives and cabooses it read Wipe out Axy Dent in Freight Shipment.

This is the Santa Monica Pier

This shot shows the parking lot and building seen on the right side of the photo. The pier dates to 1909 and had an amusement park in the early days but none from 1930 until the current one, Pacific Park, opened in 1996. I believe the vintage photo was taken from this property which is now the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. I have not been able to identify the prior hotel
but am quite sure its rates were lower than the $1050/night it will now cost you to stay at the Loews.

I think that the photographer was on the balcony arrowed below. I haven't yet mananged to find a name for this hotel (apartment building?), seen here in 1979. As Bristolian said, it's where the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel now stands.

I found an image of a matchbook cover online but the website wanted $50 for me to post it.

That little place on the right on the corner is where Toff's was located. I don't know if it was Toff's then, though. By the way, I think you mean Orchid Ave., E_R. For those that don't know, this part of Orchid Ave. is no more, it's where the Dolby Theatre, formerly known as the Kodak Theatre, is located. I see that The Seven Little Foys is playing at the Paramount Theatre. Imdb says it opened June 23, 1955, in Los Angeles, California.

E_R, I guess the film is in both color and black & white.

Imdb has the running time different than yours, CBD. :shrug:

I eventually found a reference to the house's location being on Trancas Beach, although I couldn't find an address. I've arrowed what I think is the Becket Beach House on this 1972 view. Notice how, while the number of beach houses has obviously increased, they're all still relatively modest in size.

Assuming I've got the right location, the site is now occupied by either the huge house with the red tiled roof or the slightly smaller one to the left. I believe the house I've marked with a red spot is a survivor. Those large beach houses might even be big enough for Marion Davies :).

er, I think you're right in your belief that this is an AB location. There are two men dressed as clerks in AB blue aprons, plus the sign may read, "Please leave shopping carts here. Thank you."

I believe that the entrance around the corner on Chevy Chase Dr. is a possible location of the accident. There is a driveway, as in the photo, (which appears to be blocked with parking chocks), that lines up nicely with the small house across the street that looks similar to the one in the photo. https://goo.gl/maps/f9UgACYyh752

As you travel north on Chevy Chase, the building with the tall pylon is not visible, but it may have been demolished prior to the construction of John Marshall Elementary School, which opened in 1980.

The hills in the background might be the College or San Rafael Hills, but there is little to hang your hat on in the photo view, as hills are ubiquitous in SoCal.

P.S. Am trailing the current posts by 300 pages, but searched "Alpha Beta" and didn't see anything posted yet re the location.

Upon further investigation, I may have the correct location this time: 209 Arbor Vitae, Inglewood.
Although the house seems to be gone, the building with the pylon (Good Sheperd Lutheran church) exists today, as does the building adjacent to the parking lot. The light standard seems to be in the correct position, also.

"A Foreign Affair" is playing next door.

You have to understand that this movie was based on a novel by the peerless Charles Willeford who was, shall we say, an unconventional writer. He was in the tradition of Jim Thompson, only better educated. He wrote some truly hilarious crime novels without writing a single thing that was conventionally funny. He has puzzled critics for decades. Roger Corman produced another Willeford novel adaptation, "Cockfighter." It was directed by Monte Hellman. It was Corman's sworn policy never to put his own money into a film and he never lost a dime while he adhered to that. He broke his rule and bankrolled "Cockfighter." Sure enough, it was a flop, though it became a much-admired cult movie.
