And while we're in the 1940s, there's a photograph of Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) on ebay.

I was surprised that I don't remember this photograph where she has her hands folded in front of her.
She looks a little older here. Is it really her?

Good find Trucker! Where's the old storage building located? -in the Wilmington area?

Thanks ER
The building is located @ 245 North Fries Avenue in Wilmington.
There is some info on it here...

...also that's another truck with non-pneumatic solid rubber wheels. (see what i learned this week. )

Yes..you could find trucks operating into the fifties with solid rubber tires..old tech but they could handle a lot of weight.

Thanks to everyone for posting the before and after shots.

Just a guess here, but it seems like the "special event" could likely be a rodeo, considering that it was a stock yard. But I came up empty trying to find any references to rodeos at that location. It 's a shame the hexagon building couldn't have been saved. As a side note, I rode ProRodeo in upstate New York in the early 1990's (I was absolutely terrible at it!) :haha:

I found this reference on Google Books. It mentions the "Great Western Livestock Show and Rodeo" taking place in November ("nfd" = no fixed date). The book is called "Los Angeles in the 1930s: The WPA Guide to the City of Angels".

I almost fell out of my chair when I discovered it's still there! -and looking like it just stepped out of the 1940s.
I'm going to try and dig up an interior photograph.

Adaptive re-use

It's not L.A but it is considered one of the earliest examples of adaptive re-use of Industrial buildings in the United States, paving the way for many of the Buildings in the Los Angles area and across the Country to be saved.

Clock Tower Building, Built 1907. Also known as the Clock Tower Apartments. Located on the north side of Third St. between Grand and Adams St., it is well known because of the clock tower on the Grand Street corner. A residential apartment building that was converted from largest extant building that was once the Keuffel & Esser Companies complex for manufacturing drafting, architectural, surveying and engineering tools.

Redeveloped by Volt Information Sciences, Inc. starting May 1975. Dedication ceremony on October 27, 1976 when the clock was turned back on.

Hey guys,

Thought I'd mention it here. If any of you want to get inside some great history the LA Historic Theatre Foundation is hosting an Oscar Viewing Party at the Million Dollar Theatre at 3rd/Broadway tomorrow afternoon. A fun event where the proceeds go to saving / rehabilitating our long-neglected theatres.

As I mentioned some time ago, in the process of researching the prior occupants of our Victorian in Pasadena, I discovered one of them was a principal in the Batchelder-Wilson Company. I've now set down that story in my blog, and I thought you all may be interested in it, since Ernest Batchelder and his tile company have come up from time to time in these pages.

Here's the link to my blog: http://ocriblecoblis.blogspot.com/ .

Personal col.

The Wilmington Transfer and Storage Co.'s building (now Bekins) seems to have had its shape determined by an old right-of-way.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...kinsAerial.jpg
Google Maps

Bekins also has the building with silvery, three-arched roof on Island Avenue. That one has been there since at least 1952 (according to Historic Aerials). The building in Trucker's picture is at the far left of the picture below.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...v.jpg~original
GSV

The right-of-way isn't easy to follow on current aerials, but it goes right through the middle of the area in 1980, even though no rail tracks are visible. It looks like many of the current roads were just dirt tracks at the time.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ington1980.jpg
Historic Aerials

I thought I remembered the Bekins building appearing in the 'CHiPs' episode 'Family Crisis' (S02E03), but this shot was the only one I could find (the Bekins building is on the left, above the green car). The white building on the right and the chimneys in the background have now gone.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ekinsCHiPs.jpg
Rosner TV/MGM TV

Many of the buildings in this area have changed since the episode was filmed circa 1978. Other buildings survive, such as the J.M. Costello Supply Co.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...telloCHiPs.jpg
Rosner TV/MGM TV

The same view today, with less buildings and more graffiti. It probably looks worse because the road was dug up on the day the Google-mobile visited.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ostelloGSV.jpg
GSV

If anyone's interested in seeing the area in 1978, I found the final chase scene from 'CHiPs' on YouTube. A stolen movie stunt car has been used to commit several robberies. The pursuit zig-zags south from West E Street to the docks.

Retired in Texas,
Great stuff...I love the "caterpillar Tires" Back in the day trucks and trailers had either "SC" (solid commercial) or "PC" (pneumatic commercial) on their license plates..I guess they were taxed at different rates.

HossC,
Awesome research!
That right of way is apparently the Pacific Electric Railway Companies track for the "Red Car" system.

GaylordWilshire,
I believe Stearns manufactured their own engines..probably for the oil industry..great find!

time for a Martini @ the Jay Dee

Just a quick note of gratitude to the contributors to this thread, who continue to do an absolutely amazing job. Though I haven't submitted much for the past year I continue to read the thread regularly, and always enjoy it. It's exciting to see that page 1000 has nearly been reached.

Thanks again to everyone for doing such a great job, and to e_r for starting it and for managing things with such panache...it's been almost 7 years now!
