Golden West Broadcasting Tower Site
 

Long time lurker here. Thanks for the amazing site....you guys are amazing with your research and knowledge. The photo is of a transmitter site...not radio or TV studios, which were all located on Sunset at the KTLA location.

I ran across this post and thought I would share a bit about working for Golden West Broadcasting and one night in particular: I was employed at GWB's Seattle radio stations (KPLZ and KVI) during the 80's. As was mentioned in a prior post, singer/actor Gene Autry owned the broadcast chain, and he took great pride in the reputation it had of hiring big personalities and garnering big ratings--it was a top-notch operation, with prominent radio and TV stations primarily on the west coast.

At the time, Gene also owned the California Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels) baseball team, and even though he was getting up there in age, whenever he could he loved to travel with the team on road trips. It was during one summer evening when the Angels traveled to Seattle to play the Mariners that I had a night to remember. The General Manager of our radio stations gave me the honor of joining him and Gene and his wife Jackie in their private box to watch the game in the King Dome. Gene was a wonder; he seemed to know everyone in film and politics. I couldn't help my self and and for several hours peppered him with questions. He loved it, and went on and on relating Hollywood stories and telling jokes---all the while keeping close track of how his beloved Angels were doing during the game. I'll always treasure working for him and that special evening. At the stations we always called him "The Cowboy"....and he was one of a kind.

It's Boss and The Scene have been mentioned on NLA, but I don't recall The Strip Combers.

I cannot find any photos of the place as The Strip Combers, but I found the address. A November 11, 1966, LA Free Press map has it located at 8301 Sunset Blvd., which is where The Source restaurant (covered in a few posts on NLA), opened in the late 60's, was located and is now the Cabo Cantina, listed as temporarily closed.

A notation for The Strip Combers reports "The Stripcombers is HAPPENING for black leather jackets and motorcycle boots if that is your bag. Keen fun at 8301 Sunset Blvd. (for pertinent information phone the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station*)." ?

*On the map the Sheriff's Station is also listed, with this notation: "West L.A. Sheriff's Station nestled in the heart of the outskirts of the fringe of where everything is happening, this moral arsenal provides shelter and sanctuary for that proud and magnificent beast we call THE WEST L.A. SHERIFF'S DEPUTY/servant & protector OR, more commonly, THE MAN. See the hapless trustees in their stencilled shirts washing HIS cars. Hear bold Aryan operatives rave about long hair freakos and the last John Birch meeting at 720 N. San Vincente Blvd. (phone . . . only as a last resort if you have long hair or a beard 652-3525)."

I'm also not familiar with Traian Boyer appearing at The Scene. Some photos and a video of him on You Bet Your Life HERE. IMDB says he met singer Nancy Ames in Las Vegas and they were married for 4 years.

MYSTERY LOCATION!

I came across this great Googie restaurant recently that used to exist in my hometown of Westchester. I can see the address is 6821 and in the reflection and far right you can see it's on a fairly large street. Thing is, Westchester has 6800 blocks on both North/South streets and East West Streets.

North/South 6821 only exists on Sepulveda Blvd, basically across from the Howard Hughes Center.

East/West it lines up just west of McConnell but it's all residential now. When I look at historic aerials, there was a whole neighborhood south of 88th st. that was removed.

So was it there? Or on Sepulveda? Or even Centinela, where it would be right around the Clippers headquarters, East of Jefferson? Does anyone remember this place?

I enjoyed seeing the tracks crossing Sunset Blvd. at Gardner Junction. Wish a PE car had been going by when they were filming. The Oriental Theater on Sunset Blvd. was playing Singin' in the Rain (released in April, 1952) and the baseball film The Pride of St. Louis (released in May, 1952). You'll see Schwab's and Googies. Unfortunately, the car turns at a curve in the road after Crescent Heights and we don't see The Garden of Allah. Near the end a nice shot of Ciro's and the Sunset Tower together. Appearing this day at Ciro's was Samia Gamal (wiki says she's an Egyptian belly dancer and film actress) and the Step Brothers aka The Four Step Brothers, a tap dancing act. (They have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.) That's about where the film ends. Lots of other locations one might recognize.

Last year I bought a book which I don't doubt some of you might already have, called "Bunker Noir! True Crime on Los Angeles's Bunker Hill!" as told by Nathan Marsak.

I went to the LA Central Library two weekends ago, after not having gone in nearly 2 years because of the pandemic. Anyway, while I was there, I was reminded of a little blurb I read in that book, how, back in 1982, a 53 year-old children's librarian named Yeiko Nakashima, who worked out of the Wilshire branch, was visiting the Central Library to conduct the children's reading group. The small parking lot next to the Central Library at the time was for downtown library personnel only. So, she parked three blocks north in the 7-story parking garage at the northwest corner of 4th and Olive, a garage that was built in 1923. While there, she was dragged to the little-used top floor, raped, and fatally stabbed. The incident outraged the library union, demanding closer parking to the library and better security. Her murder remains unsolved. The garage itself was demolished in 1989, and is now the site of Two California Plaza.

This one was taken in 1966. The parking garage where the murder took place is on the left. it just looks creepy, all old, the parking floors enclosed by windows. I can imagine it being really dim inside.

The caption to this picture says it was taken in 1982, the year of the murder, but the image looks more like the early or mid-1970s, going by the cars, and the totally empty-looking state of Bunker Hill. You can see the parking garage in the middle-right of the photo. It just looks like a place where an unsolved murder would occur. Gives me the creeps.

Smoggy too!

Yes, hot, smoggy. From the small shadows below Garner and the girl fans, sun high overhead, probably near noon on a mid summer day. Burbank gets very hot. Often smoggy back then too. I went to high school in the 1960s in the east Valley. The smog was so bad on some days in September and October you could barely see the Verdugo Mountains through the haze a few miles away. Not nearly so bad today. Progress. Catalytic converters. Now thieves are stealing them....Grrrr :wiseman:

You're right! I heard about that on the news, this week I believe! A rash of them. This is a case for Jim Rockford.
