Thanks HH. I obviously lead a very sheltered life. ;)

To me, this next slide doesn't look like Los Angeles at all.

There are practically no clues that might help us figure out this location.

except maybe...the sign above the No Dumping sign

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/21HVYb.jpg

It appears to be a lady with a walking stick (hat and scarf) waving into the distance. (but the writing is illegible)

The only other clue I can think of are the letters visible on the folded awning. B L B

One last slide for tonight.

"Man With Hammerjack 1967 Los Angeles Street Worker Orig Slide"

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/r6hQbL.jpg
EBAY

When I first saw this I thought the man was working inside a tunnel
but the intense shadow of the cone & flag tells a different story. (unless...artificial lighting)
____

AND... what's making all that orangish rock dust? It's not coming from the worker's jackhammer.

Looks like somewhere where cold weather and snow are common. The sign above "No Dumping" appears to show a man with gloves and a snow shovel......I think the second line of the sign starts with "Shovel Your Walks". Those guys look like Chicagoans to me.

Not L.A.

Sign says Bureau of Sanitation, there is no Bureau of Sanitation in L.A. If it was older L.A. it would say L.A. City Health Dept..

Love that shot! A reminder of when the streets were a hazard to one's clean shoes....note the board for pedestrians to transcend the muck.

Here's another view, listed as 309, 313, 313 1/2 Marchessault St.

more bridges

I returned to LA from Santa Fe, NM this afternoon on the 5+ hour late Southwest Chief train. Since the 6th Street bridge was recently discussed here, I thought I'd try to take some pictures of the other bridges over the LA river more or less visible from the train. This wasn't easy, as the train was moving pretty fast, and I'm not a very good photographer

First picture was taken on the rail flyover, looking up the river north, with the East Washington bridge in the foreground and a railroad bridge just beyond it:
https://i.imgur.com/Skjcvze.jpg

Next is the Olympic Boulevard bridge:
https://i.imgur.com/GZrEnzw.jpg

Past that is the 10 freeway bridge, not easily seen from the train due to its width and elevation:
https://i.imgur.com/AZFKMdK.jpg

Then the 7th Street bridge:
https://i.imgur.com/IHceSLo.jpg

And some work already on the contentious 6th Street Bridge:

The Fourth Street bridge:

The First Street bridge that also carries the Gold Line:

The 101 bridge:

and lastly, the Cesar E Chavez bridge:

You can see they've done a *massive* graffiti-overpainting project since I took this trip a year ago.

Thank you for the wonderful photos Lorendoc. I love that run along the river. It's such a welcome to those of us returning home.

When I posted the slide I thought to myself..."I'm not exactly sure why...but this doesn't seem like Los Angeles to me."

HELLO. THE PEOPLE ARE WEARING WINTER COATS.

I might have to turn in my sleuthing license. :(

I checked this out Lojack. No "Barney's Produce" in any of the old L.A. directories.

I see ESKIMO ESTOMO is running for Supervisor of the 3rd District.
Does anyone have a map of the 3rd District? It might help us locate this corner building.

The 3rd is my district

There's a map at the link above, but LA County Districts are so huge, it probably won't help much.

Sheila Kuehl is Supervisor of the 3rd. She's great.

That's why they were known as The Five Kings.

Anybody posted pics of the old railroad up Echo Mountain and Mt. Lowe? Tied right into the Pacific Electric. It was quite the tourist attraction until the 1930s depression. Wish we still had that, along with the Richfield tower..

There is a Chevron station sign in the picture. Likely quite a number of them in the big ol' Third District in 1970. Someone is going to have to check them all out. :)
