I know we're getting a long way from LA, but for those who don't know, Gretna Green is a small village in Scotland. From Wikipedia:
Gretna Green is one of the world's most popular wedding destinations, due to its romantic wedding traditions dating back over centuries, which originated from cross-border elopements stemming from differences between Scottish marriage laws and those in neighbouring countries.

It has usually been assumed that Gretna's famous "runaway marriages" began in 1754 when Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act came into force in England. Under the Act, if a parent of a minor (i.e., a person under the age of 21) objected to the minor's marriage, the parent could legally veto the union. The Act tightened the requirements for marrying in England and Wales but did not apply in Scotland, where it was possible for boys to marry at 14 and girls at 12 with or without parental consent. It was, however, only in the 1770s, with the construction of a toll road passing through the hitherto obscure village of Graitney, that Gretna Green became the first easily reachable village over the Scottish border.
I guess that's why Yuma borrowed the name. Here's the Old Blacksmith's Shop, built around 1712.

You beat me to it HossC

...but I feel compelled to add this bit from the Gretna Green wiki:

"Scottish law allowed for "irregular marriages", meaning that if a declaration was made before two witnesses, almost anybody had the authority to conduct the marriage ceremony."

For some reason blacksmiths often took this on. "Blacksmith priests" and their anvil/altars became associated with Gretna Green weddings.

In the late 70's back when Santa Monica was still a sleepy, down at its heels seaside town and Third Street consisted mostly of used bookshops and yarn stores, there was a bar called (I believe) the Wind and Sea. It was located on Ocean and either Arizona, Santa Monica or Broadway. It was a real dive bar like something out of O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh" and the patrons were real down and outers.

For years, I've been looking for photographs or other evidence of its existence but never found anything. Ring a bell with anyone?

You have a very good memory, Blaster. From the 1960 Santa Monica city directory:

This address is shown on both views I posted at http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...ostcount=38598. The "Wind and Sea" was in the beveled building at the NE corner of Ocean and Broadway, and is currently the Ma'kai Restaurant and Lounge: "Chosen as Santa Monica's best cocktail lounge for 2009 and 2010." As the Russians say, the apple does not fall far from the tree.

This is a Dick Whittington Studio picture a little later than the parade picture that *almost* gives us a view of the bar...if he had only gone 1 block south...

The county assessor gives the build date of 101 Broadway as 1913/1955. The Wind & Sea existed at least through 1988, noirish flavor intact:
Is There No Going Back For Houston?
October 23, 1988|By DAVE JOSEPH, Staff Writer Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The restless night has ended, and the homeless here abandon their sandy retreats.

Stirred by the tide, the runners and cyclists, they walk or stagger along Ocean Avenue in search of scraps and handouts, bottles and cans.

A half-full shopping cart of returnables will get a drink at the Wind & Sea bar or a greasy burger at one of the food stands past the small carny on Santa Monica Pier.

``A lot of people probably want to know what happened to me.``

Houston McTear, 31, squints to the south as he sits on a bench streaked with bird dung at the end of the pier. Smog has forced the tourists to strain for a glimpse of Palos Verdos to the south. Behind McTear, to the north, the hills of Malibu are brilliant and clear.

``I guess I kind of disappeared for a few years.``

Trip past the tourists, past nautical-theme restaurants, and find Houston McTear, who tied the 100-yard world record of 9.0 when just a high school junior in Florida.

Skip by the cheap, oceanfront hotels, stumble by the body Nazis whose Reeboks pound the palm-filled parks, and find Olympian Houston McTear, ranked second in the world in the 100 meters in 1977.

``Maybe I came before my time,`` he says, rubbing the scraggly growth on his chin. ``Maybe I was just a kid out of high school. Maybe everyone threw everything at me at once.``

Or maybe it was the way he fell through the cracks of cocaine, or the way he spent parts of 2 1/2 years as one of 8,000 homeless wandering half-etherized around Santa Monica and Venice. Or maybe it was the way he spent a month the past summer in a county jail, allegedly for selling drugs.

Lorendoc, much thanks for the info on the Wind and Sea. I thought it was long gone before 1988.

Hi CBD, a minor follow-up on your great Art Center/Craig Ellwood post.

5353 W 3rd St was designed by A. S. Heineman in 1922. He was known for large Pasadena homes and as the builder and developer of the first motel (The Milestone Mo-Tel,1925, in San Luis Obispo).

The school was built for the Cumnock School and then, as you say, it was taken over by Art Center after the war.

When Art Center left in the 70s, Whittier College School of Law came in and stayed the better part of 20 years. I remember it best as that. They had a very distinctive sign.

It is now, as GW said in his post (linked above), the Yavneh Hebrew Academy. The building appears to be changed hardly at all from the day it was built; unusual for LA.

Thank you tovanger2 for your added information that I was not aware of.
I graduated from the old ACC campus location in 1972. John Lear, designer of the Leer business jet, spoke at my graduation ceremony.

The green house at the right is just out of the vintage photo and the new Hancock Gardens apartments, across from the front of the church and the car, has replaced the old Craftsman style house [at the left].

The vintage photo was taken in front of the church steps on Van Ness.

Tovanger 2 has the correct view [previous reply].

unihikid, I really enjoyed seeing your post with the Phil Specter Christmas album and really interesting that you dad is on the cover! I've still got an original copy of that LP in my collection.

And tovangar2, thanks for your great post on Village Recorder. That place really has an amazing legacy, and your photos were great.

Happy Holidays, everyone.

A little info no the house: ore and oil man Isaac Boicourt built it ca 1912; he was still living there with his wife Ida and old-maid daughter Edna when he died in 1941. Ida died in the house in 1948. Apparently not so adept at cramming her late-model Buick into a 1912 garage, Edna was issued a building permit on December 22, 1969, to repair "motor vehicle damage" made to the outbuilding. (Edna, who'd been a music teacher, died at 95 in 1981.)

Edna seems to have sold the property to the developers of the Hancock Gardens Apartments, who in Feb 1974 were issued a permit to demo the house.

Parking Price Wars

The difference of 5 cents created a bitter price slashing war between two parking lots in Hollywood today.
The operator of the lot in foreground said, "I cut my all-day fee from 25 cents to 20. I went down to a nickel (arrow, left)
when price slashing started in earnest." The other operator said, "...then he droppedagain and I did the same, finally to 10 cents (arrow, at right).
Sure it's silly." Photo dated: May 10, 1949.

I can't get my coordinates.
