Here's another label for tonight.
.............................................Hart's Bourbon Whiskey......................................................... https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/dkdJeL.jpg californiahistorycollection ..such a beautiful design. If I am not mistaken, there is a bar downtown that has a stag as a sign. (but I can't remember the name of the place) Surprise! |
I am a long time lurker on this thread and have finally joined this forum just to post my gratitude to the many contributors of both photos and context around them. It truly is fascinating.

Yes, Ben Siegel's house is still in Beverly Hills at 810 N. Linden Drive. http://www.americarevisited.bravehost.com/bugsy.jpgAmerica Revisited https://chensandchai.files.wordpress...-1-1.jpg?w=800Chen's&Chai https://chensandchai.files.wordpress...g?w=1014&h=760Chen's&Chai On IMDB they have 14 locations where the Bugsy film was shot, but they don't list this one. Wonder why? Does Beverly Hills try to discourage things like that? There are other reasons to visit Linden Drive as well. The film was shot there, and so was Bugsy on June 20, 1947. But, also of interest, Howard Hughes had crashed his XF-11 prototype plane almost directly across the street at 803 and 805 Linden Dr. less than a year earlier on July 7, 1946. Also, the famous Witch's House (Spadena House) is right around the corner at 516 Walden Drive. ____________________ If one likes movies and you live in Los Angeles there are opportunities to see classic films in various venues and, if one is of the mind to, you can plan an outing before or after to visit a location where it was filmed. Some friends and I have done that for films such as both Bugsy and The Aviator, Double Indemnity, The Outside Man and Model Shop, among others. |

Poor Bugsy was reading the newspaper.....whoa, when all of a sudden he became the news. The house is the Virginia Hill mansion.....btw, she was not at home that day. |
Is "Bugsy's" house still around? The city was corrupt back then (and maybe it still is ). Is it true Ben was trying to get into the movies? In the film they showed him doing screen tests. I read somewhere that Ben's role in "inventing" Las Vegas was exagerrated. Someone else actually had the idea for the Flamingo, and he just muscled in. But he did push the luxury resort idea, and spent what were then huge sums of his partner's $ finishing the Flamingo (and maybe raking off a few bucks for himself) that it sealed his fate. Vegas should erect a statue, or at least name a street after him, and one for his lady friend too. "Double Indemnity" is another great noir film I love, as is "Sunset Blvd". Another era.
Since Siegel palled around with the likes of Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, and Jean Harlow, it would not have been difficult for him to arrange a screen test. You're correct about Siegel's role in "inventing" LV, as Billy Wilkerson had the vision for the hotel.http://bit.do/WILKERSON In THE GODFATHER PART II, Moe Greene's character was inspired by mob-connected Gus Greenbaum and Moe Sedway.http://bit.do/GREENBAUM http://bit.do/SEDWAY Siegal also had a home in Holmby hills, and there is an interesting story about his attempt to avoid arrest. http://bit.do/HOLMBY-HILLS-HOME After Mickey Cohen's home in Brentwood was bombed, http://bit.do/COHEN-PHOTOS and he went to prison for a few years, he leased a home in Van Nuys, CA. http://bit.do/COHEN-HOUSE A HS buddy lived just around the corner, and Amanda Blake http://bit.do/AMANDA-BLAKE lived two blocks the other way. (Nice lady, I never saw Cohen.) A few facts about Siegel. http://bit.do/BUGSY-SIEGAL |

'mystery' location. drugstore, Los Angeles [c.1890?]
I found these two cabinet cards in one of my older files. At first I wasn't sure if they were from Los Angeles. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/GP77q3.jpg If you look closely, you can see that the name of the drug store is 'West End' Pharmacy. Here, this should help. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/VAxqrL.jpg :previous: See that sign beneath the upstairs window directly above the pharmacy. This one. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/2IolQy.jpg hmmm....McCoy?......maybe T. J. McCoy....possibly Dr. T. J. McCoy(?) ..... I wonder if he is the owner of the pharmacy. It would make sense. two more details I'd like to point out. Is this a hurdy gurdy man? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/Fk66hp.jpg ...or is the box attached to the pole? The 'ghost' in the center window. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/3...922/P73j8N.jpg WAIT! THERE'S MORE. Believe it or not, a 2nd cabinet card shows the interior of the pharmacy. AMAZING! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/FKGVHO.jpg I wonder if one of these gentleman is T. J. McCoy? Why west end?... I pondered. hmmmm...an area.....a street? Sure enough, there used to be a West End Avenue. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...923/gVggW8.jpg lapl but..there were other establishments named 'West End' that were not located on West End Ave. for example. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...924/1Bjql5.jpg and one on Temple https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/3xCrZQ.jpg I located a T. J. McCoy in the Bryson Block https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/mWnNps.jpg but the cabinet card could be older than 1894. This might be T. J. McCoy's home address. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...921/XsdPPz.jpg I am pretty sure I found a T. J. McCoy listed with 'pharm' after his name...but I must have misplaced it. :( Now that I confused everyone.... .............................................does anyone have an idea where Dr. T. J. McCoy's West End Pharmacy was located? . |

Except for E_R's post about this place and a follow-up comment or two, this was the only mention of this place on NLA. It was posted July 5, 2013. HOWEVER, I was just reading an article about this place that says: The City of L.A.'s Cultural Heritage Commission voted in favor of Tom Bergin's landmark nomination. The nomination next goes to the PLUM committee for a vote. (PLUM is Planning and Land Use Management.) It also stated: Operating continuously for 82 years (1936-2018), Tom Bergin’s was one of Los Angeles’ most iconic and longest‐lived bars. Located since 1949 in the distinctive Tudor Revival structure at 840 S. Fairfax Avenue, Tom Bergin’s was a notable legacy business that boasted the second‐oldest liquor license in Los Angeles. So I did a little searching and found that it was slated to close in July, 2013, but then: longtime regular Derek Schreck, an actor with a handful of small movie roles, had dreamt of opening a bar. He bought the place and revamped the interiors and exteriors as well as the menu while trying to recapture the bar's original ambiance. In January 2014, Tom Bergin's reopened. Then: Tom Bergin's Facebook page stated that it will be closing for "regular business" on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018. Owner/proprietor, Derek Schreck said that Tom Bergin's will remain open on a limited schedule (Thursday-Saturday) until "all this beautiful booze gets sufficiently drank." I guess it's now actually closed, but the building is awaiting landmark status. https://www.discoverlosangeles.com/e...-of-an-la-icon https://66.media.tumblr.com/96451916...t7pn7_1280.jpgL.A. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/3BSceu.jpg lapl What is really interesting about this listing..is that -it includes the name :previous:McCoy's Station. .. (it is mentioned in the last line of Noir Noir's newspaper clipping) shown above. As far as I can tell, this is the only time McCoy's Station is mentioned in any of the directories. . |
mystery location.
"Orig 1973 35mm slide - Los Angeles cityscape view, somewhere in the Westwood section." If I'm not mistaken, that's Century City in the distance. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/7rIEOF.jpg Ebay I am not sure where, in Westwood, this slide was taken. (it is Westwood, right?) At first, I was baffled by that cluster of pine trees in Century City. (they seemed impossibly tall)...but now I'm pretty sure it's a skyscraper under construction...............But which skyscraper? The [easily recognizable] Century Plaza Hotel is at far right. (but shouldn't it be far left ?) ........I'm discombobulated. (p.s. the purple cloud is my crude attempt to cover up a watermark) |

Fantastic discovery FW!
I bet the two torn segments are the left and right ends of a panorama. .....*maniacally searches for middle segment* ______________________ Thanks for figuing out the location of the 1973 Westwood slide, BillinGlendale. You have eased my combobulation. ;) |
