The Geller Theater/Workshop/Studios at 6040 Wilshire preceded Seibu and Orbachs and the Petersen Museum. It seems that the original structure was built around (or before) 1937 and was demolished in 1960 to make way for Seibu. Hard to tell whether the building was an art moderne gem worth saving. Similarities with certain studios on Sunset/Hollywood with a dash of the Simon's signage (Fairfax and Wilshire) suggest that it may have easily deserved honorable mention.

:previous: Very interesting find BifRayRock. I wasn't aware of the Geller Theatre Workshop.

An aviation/Wilshire puzzlement?

Source claims this is (slightly) south of Wilshire - Fairfax territory, and possibly Roger's Airfield, circa 1920. http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si.../id/5281/rec/8 Although there is possibly a JN4 in the sky, the lack of derricks on the horizon and the extra-large size of the barn-like structure suggests maybe this is not that location. Perhaps even more interesting is the "side-of-the-barn" circular painting. Source describes this as a large circular window. Is it an advertisement? For what?

Apparently the Ben Bard Playhouse, which became Geller's, opened in April 1936. Milton J. Black designed it--along with the Mauretania apartments, D olores del Rio's house AND, apparently, the Tail 'O the Pup and others we've seen here. I posted another picture of the Geller Theatre Workshop building when it was Ben Bard's in post #25085.

-------------------

I don't think we've seen this view before. USC describe it as "Shop on the southeast corner of 7th Street and Grand Street, Los Angeles, 1912". California State Library has the same image dated as circa 1899, but the Grand Avenue Theatre on the right didn't open until 1908 (when it was known as the Walker). It was briefly known as Clune's Grand Avenue Theatre, and the Clune's name is visible here, although it appears to have been painted out. I posted a later picture of the theater when it was the Walker Auditorium Building in post #20832.

USC Digital Library

Here's the same corner today. The 12-story Brockman Building was built in 1912, so the picture above captures the Busy Bee Lunch Room and its neighbors just before they were torn down.

Has anyone heard of "Vine Villa" before? Do you think it appears on any early plat maps?

That's the intersection of Riverside and Fletcher Drives. The photographer was most likely standing on the embankment where the streetcars used to run. Do I win the '68 Charger next to the Mustang? :)
